What did you expect the outcome of a collaboration between Mike Fabulous and James Milne, AKA Lawrence Arabia, to sound like? If it isn’t what you hear on the pair’s debut album, Unlimited Buffet, you’ve probably never heard either musician before, or you were hoping for a sea change that was unlikely from the outset. But what it sounds like isn’t what’s surprising about this unexpected coupling; it’s that what you hear actually sounds quite good. Mike Fabulous is perhaps best well known for his work with The Black Seeds, as well as being very much a part of the Fly My Pretties collective. It’s his fingerprints that leave the most obvious mark on the album, with smatterings of funk and soul illustrated by loose bass, drumming that is heavy on the ride cymbal and an obligatory horn section. Add Milne’s idiosyncratic vocal and the outcome recalls what David Bowie referred to as “plastic soul”, perfect for a generation used to plastic reproductions of eras past. Carlo Troja aka Don Carlos hails from Varese, in the North of Italy, and is active as a DJ from the late 70′s. He debuted as a producer towards the end of the 80′s with the single ‘Alone’ on Calypso Records (Irma), which became one of the cult tracks of the international Deep House scene. His productions have always mixed House rhythms with afro-american jazz sounds, verging sometime towards disco, sometime towards progressive house or electronic soul. In 1992 IRMA USA released his first album ‘Mediterraneo’, followed in 1993 by the Montego Bay project, produced together with Stefano Tirone (S-Tone Inc.), also on IRMA. He then released some singles on the Chicago based label Guidance under the Aquanauts moniker. He also reached the UK charts with the hit ‘You Make Me Feel’, sung by Byron Stingley, cover of the cult song by Sylvester. Berlin based Brit Ed Davenport has announced his debut LP, Counterchange. Having slowly but assuredly emerged through the mire of house producers in the last 5 or so years, Ed Davenport now cuts it with the best of them. A steady stream of singles, EPs and remixes have come on labels like liebe*detail, Falkplatz and Pooled Music in recent times, but arguably it’s the Salisbury born man’s work for Bristol’s NRK which has found him really finding his feet. The More Red Lights and New Yorkshire EPs from 2011 are testament to that, both of which explored a well-designed, thick and heavy house and techno sound. It’s a similar sound explored throughout Counterchange, too, but with plenty of concessions to filmic home listening rather than straight up dancefloor fodder.
