The courtship of ambient music and traditional songform has been a long and tenuous one, almost to the point that their differences seem irreconcilable. Spanning decades with only a few points of obscure intersections, the occasions on which the two styles have met and crossed into the pop culture lexicon have often yielded a contrary, oil-and-water form. The abstract nature of the “ambient” genre and instant gratification of the “pop” song require deft hands for successful cohabitation, thus it’s little wonder that there are so few practitioners of its delicate equilibrium. Icelandic pop experimentalists múm will release a collection of rarities on July 17th via Morr Music. Early Birds collects demos and rare/forgotten vinyl releases from the band’s early years between 1998 and 2000. The 15-tracks serve as a glimpse at what they were coming up before their Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today is OK debut. Most of the songs are instrumental, recorded during a nomadic period in founding members Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson’s lives that found them in basement studios across Europe from Iceland to France. Though delicate melodies bind the songs together, there are two distinctive moods on the album. “The first half of the compilation leans on the playful side, where experimentation is key,” states a press release. “The second half incorporates those quieter tracks, with only a few analog layers, harmonious and blissful, revolving around each other for minutes.” Both vinyl and CD editions will contain a booklet detailing each track. Во время работы над альбомом 2006 года "The Grass Is Always Greener" Барбару Моргенштерн все еще называли "иконой электропопа". Этот корсет, который она носила с ранних дней своей берлинской гостиной, стал для нее слишком тесным. Воздушность уступила место новой глубине. То, что раньше было простым, теперь стало более сложным, иногда даже громоздким. Новая поп-музыка Барбары Моргенштерн полна крючков, петель и подводных камней. "bm" перемежается с раздражениями, какофонией и неровными ритмами. На таком фоне экспансивные моменты поп-музыки, когда панорама расширяется, а сердце взлетает, кажутся еще более значительными. И это действительно здорово, когда из резкого шума появляется поп-музыка. В общем, музыка как никогда непредсказуема и многогранна. И не только: Моргенштерн поет не только по-немецки, но и по-английски, а однажды даже по-польски. Она исполнила давнюю мечту, написав вместе с Робертом Уайаттом хрупко-романтичную песню "Camouflage".
