The sixth album of the Viennese string quartet, co-produced by Bugge Wesseltoft, resists any genre attribution. This music has many names. Music, created by two violins, viola, cello and the human voice. Artists reluctantly make drawers to categorize their work, but the radio.string.quartet has done it. As CrossoverJazzClassicPopFusionRockNewMusicElectronic "thing, the four Viennese describe their new work In Between Silence. Because with such a word monster no one can start anything, they push the Na-If instrumentalists talk of visions, then they are little words with which they convey these. Rather, they use the sounds, rhythms, melodies, sounds or silence to present visionary feelings, thoughts, images, colors or stories. His visions leave the percussionist and rhythm drummer Murat Coskun on this CD in dialogue with two great musicians and masters of improvisation, David Friedman and Arezoo Rezvani, some of the artists who inspired them in recent years: Nine Inch Nails, Franz Schubert, Feist, Est, Arvo Pärt, Bugge Wesseltoft & Sidsel Endresen. In Between Silence, as it was for a real band, they were recorded live together in the studio, but additionally enriched with self-created samples and overdubs. In a recording the quartet even got support from the techno-pioneer Henrik Schwarz and the increased use of voices broadened the band's horizons considerably. Career-spanning compilation from Scotland’s greatest exponents of Americana rock. Joe Whyte reviews for LTW. It’s hard to believe that The Wynntown Marshals have been at this for a decade; three studio albums, several EPs and singles and countless shows across Europe and they still seem like a “new” band to me. I guess there’s something effervescent and timeless about what they do that keeps me coming back. I’ve mentioned it many times before, but this is a band that truly transcend the ghetto of Americana and its glut of average-ness and make music, that while in the realms of alt. country, No Depression and all of that, has a classicism at its core that makes them so very much more. Listening to this compilation, which includes several unreleased tracks for the completists, I hear much of what Teenage Fanclub are oft applauded for; chiming guitars, climbing harmonies, lovelorn lyricism and songwriting that elevates the soul.That’s the heart of this band. The stories, the songs; and again, not unlike Teenage Fanclub, the Marshals should be national treasures for these songs from Northern Britain. They are miles above the competition at this sort of thing. I’ve compared them to bands as diverse as Big Star and The Replacements in the past and I stand by that; they’ve started off as a Jayhawks/Uncle Tupelo-influenced outfit but have quickly and cleverly evolved into a band that write their own descriptions. There’s hints of all the great blue collar rock and roll herein and the vigour of the band and the strength of the songwriting rarely disappoints. wynn 2 Repeated listening unearths treasures galore; the soaring massed vocals of The End Of The Golden Age; the pop-rock smarts of Canada, the clever and deceptively simple lyrical tricks of Red Clay Hill with its supercharged guitar licks. This is a collection for both the fan and the newcomer and the range of writing is really quite something. The later tracks such as Being Lazy with its swooning synths beneath the pulsing good-time vibe and the as-yet unreleased Odessa sparkle with the longing of country music and the brusque charm of Springsteen or Earle. The storytelling is always exquisite and 11.15, about a biblical Perthshire flood, is epic and grand while The Burning Blue, about the pilots the RAF in WW2, has pathos in spades. That cinematic, filmic feel is rarely far away. The early release Ballad Of Jayne (from a compilation) is included and is simply smile-cracking. Originally a song by Angeleno hair-metal spandex-stretchers LA Guns, it’s beautifully re-imagined as a widescreen roots-rocker with sharp incisors and a cheeky grin. Whispering Bob Harris took this one to his heart early on and his support back then on BBC Radio 2 gave the fledgling band a much-needed shove in the right direction. Mock Rock, Bob? Not these guys. Laterally, Blue Rose Records have embraced the band, releasing much of their recent material. They’re not a band to shout from the rooftops; they get on with their business of writing and recording material of such class that they don’t really need to. Keith Benzie is a lyricist of such simple but articulate craft that it’s a delight to listen to a song unfold. I’m often reminded of the street-grit of Tom Waits when I hear Benzie unfurl a phrase. The musicians (and there’s been a few of them over the decade) add a zest and shimmer, be it all-out Tele twang or gentle pedal steel flourishes. There’s a muscularity and Goddammit, a groove to much of The Marshals music that elevates it above the average. The simple joy of much of the songs (despite the often lyrical longing and restlessness) is the thing keeps me coming back. It should pull you in, too. Long may they reign. We’re Not Going Anywhere: At a historical moment of immense political, social, and ecological uncertainty, those four simple words comprise both a promise and a protest, a comforting reassurance of inclusion as well as a hearty cry of defiance. It’s a statement that offers no small sense of hope, in that sense matching the music contained on the album. On these vividly imagined and passionately performed songs David Ramirez takes in the world from his unique perspective: “Being half white and half Mexican has made this current political climate especially interesting. So many cultures in this country are being viewed as un-American and it breaks my heart. My family have raised children here, created successful businesses here, and are proud to be a part of this country. Most of what I’ve seen as of late is misplaced fear. I wanted to write about that fear and how, instead of benefiting us, it sends us spiraling out control.” The album that bears that title marks a departure for Ramirez, who builds on the rootsy sound of his early albums to create something new, something bold, something anchored in the here and now. THREE CD BOX SET FEATURING THE BEST OF JOHN PRINE IN CONCERT This three CD set features some of the finest live performances made during the lengthy career of the hugely influential singer-songwriter John Prine. Disc One showcases two separate events from 1970, prior to the release of his self-titled debut album. The first is taken from an August gig at The 5th Peg in Chicago, while the second finds Prine playing in the studio for the long-running Studs Terkel radio show Disc Two features a show performed in support of John's 1986 album German Afternoons, in front of a rapt audience in Asheville, NC in October that year. This box concludes with Prine's set at The Singer-Songwriter Festival in Frutigen, Switzerland on 13th May 1996, in support of Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessings album. Having previously recorded an EP with punk legend and hellraiser Shane MacGowan, Candice Gordon is set to release her debut full length album ‘Garden of Beasts’ on the 3rd March 2017 via Proper Octopus Records. Produced by labelmate A.S. Fanning, and mixed by Ingo Krauss (Swans, Iggy and the Stooges), the album was recorded in a country house in Ireland and at the legendary Funkhaus in Berlin. It presents a rich and brooding sonic landscape constructed using a variety of synthetic and natural instruments from Moogs to flutes, and Gordon even plays a one-string Kazakh instrument at times. “Garden of Beasts is inspired by moving to Berlin and facing the very dark and heavy history that is visible and inescapable everywhere in the city. The second world war and the Holocaust feels very real and close here. It’s an exploration of human nature, the hubris of identity, dispossession, and the conflict between the allure of savagery and the desperation for salvation from that.” explains Candice. The rich soundscapes and sometimes jarring imagery could only come from the mind of a creative polymath--an accomplished visual artist, animator, director, and producer, VanGaalen has scored television shows, designed puppet characters for Adult Swim, directed videos for Shabazz Palaces, Strand of Oaks, METZ, Dan Deacon, and The Head and the Heart, and produced records for Women, Alvvays, and others. While alienation has always been a theme of VanGaalen's music, Light Information draws on a new kind of wisdom--and anxiety--gained as he watches his kids growing up. "Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that's happening through the internet," he says. Throughout the dark-wave reverb of Light Information are stories of paranoia, disembodiment, and isolation--but there's also playfulness, empathy, and intimacy. The product of six years' work, going back even before 2014's Shrink Dust, Light Information emerged from the experimental instruments that fill VanGaalen's Calgary garage studio. As always, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music on Light Information (save Ryan Bourne's bass part on "Mystery Elementals" and vocals on "Static Shape" from his young daughters Ezzy and Pip), and designed the cover art. Songs of Bob Dylan is a project I’ve been wanting to do since I first covered Bob’s “Man in the Long Black Coat” on my album Relish. Bob has been a tremendous inspiration, and I’ve been lucky enough to record with him and to sing onstage with him when I toured with the Dead. After getting a chance to do an all-Dylan show during a two week residency in NYC earlier this year, I decided now is the time to make this album. There is of course a deep well of brilliant songs to choose from, and the fact that the Nobel Prize committee has recently honored him makes me even more excited about it. We’ve started recording the album and it will be released next spring. We’ll be posting video updates and behind the scenes looks at the recording sessions so you can come along for the ride. Frére alias Alexander Körner comes from Bochum and is very active in the music business at the beginning of the 20th century. Before his career in the Indiepop, he was supposed to be a bassist in a punk-powermetal hip-hop electro band. His new record suggests quite different tones. The harsh times have long since passed. Already in the intro flatter mystic synthesizer sounds, which pass seamlessly into the title song "Void". He sings in a typical singer songwriter style, giving a blessing to James Blunt or Ed Sheeran. The fans of the two Britains may forgive us. But "Void" simply sounds more creative and imaginative. The young musicians from Bochum succeed the exciting balancing act between pleasant indie pop and artistic demand. To an analogue basic arrangement with guitar, voice and drum, Frére builds up a lot of fantastic effects that captivate the listener or just blown away. The song "Shadows" is an example. Spatial, classical guitar, a catchy chorus and a lot of dynamics fascinate from the beginning. The fantastic singing pauses he skillfully bridged with electronic effects up to the next employment. Similar, just born and more focused on the guitar is the song "Ghost". to enjoy. Here it is worth to listen more closely. Straight As far as the lyrics are concerned, Frére formulates without a doubt. He speaks his subjects honestly and unreservedly, without claiming to have thoroughly investigated the contents. The young Bochumer, who still likes to walk through subways and is going to parties, "Void" made an adult album with great sound.
