Combining elements of electronica, post-rock and alternative rock with subtle progressive undertones, MIDAS FALL have spent three years carving a distinctive and captivating sound, creating taut, shimmering soundscapes led by the hauntingly melancholic vocals of Elizabeth Heaton. Their worldwide debut release on Monotreme in 2010, "Eleven. Return and Revert", received glowing reviews. Live supports with Japanese post-rockers MONO, WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS and label-mates 65daysofstatic and JENIFEREVER, alongside their own headline tours and appearances at festivals including Belgium's Dunk! and Germany's Dark Spring have significantly bolstered the band's fanbase. Their second album, "Wilderness", sees MIDAS FALL maturing their sound beautifully, delivering on the promise referenced in their previous reviews. Equally accomplished at tender balladry ("Borders", "Tiny Pieces Will Always Remain") or driving guitar crescendos ("BPD", "Carnival Song"), Midas Fall demonstrate not only their powerful songcraft and musicianship, but also their outstanding production skills - the album was self-recorded, mixed and mastered from home on a minimal budget but sounds like the product of a much more high-end studio. After releasing "Freeclouds" in 2011 under his own name, CARTER TANTON toured the US with The War on Drugs and then joined Lower Dens. While on tour with Lower Dens, Carter had plenty of time to experiment with new ways of crafting songs using samples and other electronics. The resulting album, "They're Flowers", is his first release under the LUXURY LINERS moniker. Tanton explains, "This record had me stepping away from the guitar and focusing more on my interests in electronic music production. Still, most of the songs were written on a nylon string guitar. I actually thought the record was going to come out like Nick Drake judging from the original arrangements, but being on tour so much with Lower Dens, I had to bend them to fit the laptop." The opening track, "Caribbean Sunset," loosely based on a John Cale track, uses Cale's lyrics but alters the melodic structures dramatically. The song, while originally recorded with the intention of becoming the first of a full album of John Cale covers, is the only one, as Tanton was drawn to crafting his own summery blend of electronic pop as well as recognizing other musicians who have influenced him. "Memphis Alex", written soon after Alex Chilton's death, loosely details a road trip - a car accident with a Mac truck in a snowstorm, ending up in Memphis and meeting Jody Stephens at the legendary Ardent Studios. An album replete with lyrics lifted from mascara ads and characters from what could have been the jam band third installment of The Decline of Western Civilization, "They're Flowers" retains a clear, twinkling, pop-laced sunny sound as it explores drum programming and sampling via the laptop, Tanton's primary instrument while on tour. LUXURY LINERS is a clear departure from previous projects, one that reflects growth, ambition and ultimately, what gets created on the road. Fire Records delve further in to the Australian underground with the signing of Melbourne-based four-piece LOWER PLENTY. Their transfixing LP "Hard Rubbish" was voted Album of the Year 2012 on Aussie indie bible Mess + Noise. Comprised of some of the city's most talented musicians, Daniel Twomey, Jensen Tjhung, Sarah Heyward and Al Montfort hail from various other bands such as DEAF WISH, TOTAL CONTROL, UV RACE and THE FOCUS. A departure from the harsher sounds of their other projects, LOWER PLENTY create beautifully melancholy, suburban-country music that's made while sitting around the kitchen table. Raw and delicate, "Hard Rubbish" was recorded on eight-track reel-to-reel tape, often in just a single take. Their folk-tinged indie rock is flecked with experimentation whilst retaining a firm hold on some fantastically memorable melodies. With a non-traditional set-up of two guitars, drums and processed percussion with four vocals - LOWER PLENTY take us on a very exciting ride. Recorded in phases between Jim Eno's Public Hifi in Austin, producer Daniel Black's Bent Black studio in D.C., and the band's hometown of New Orleans, "Heza" finds GENERATIONALS more satisfied in songs that breathe and grow over time. These songs show restraint, with the hooks developing in the spaces between sounds and an attention to rhythms and textures that reveals a more patient band willing to dig for deeper gems than in their previous work. Tracks like "You Got Me" and "Put a Light On" use minimalist electronic frameworks to match the intensity of more straightforward guitarwork on "Spinoza" and "I Never Know," all of them placing the focus more on layers and arrangements than to forcing the hook. On "Heza", GENERATIONALS aren't so much shedding their old skin as growing more comfortable in the one they've always inhabited. This album collects CHILD BITE's recent two sibling EP's into one brutal package. For years, we have watched Child Bite change, contort, and rearrange itself in to the gnarly powerhouse that exists in its current period. Since the inception of their now steady relationship with JNR, the sounds have become more abrasive then their spastic avant-pop beginnings. Within the first few moments of "Worship", you will find yourself encouraged to "worship the father / slaughter the son" as well as "snip off the tip of the blasphemer's tongue." However you choose to interpret singer Shawn Knight's vocals, which are easily his most hostile to date, you wont escape the mood of this piece. And, the mood is that of 4 perplexed soldiers foraging for rushes of adrenaline to keep themselves alive while condemned to fight an unjust, unwinnable war. "Wrong Flesh" is a gritty battle march, which conjures memories of the Deadites storming the castle in search of the Necronomicon. From here, they take us down paths that are exponentially dark - with, "No pussy shit" as their credo. This is, in fact, the darkest and most mature effort we have seen from Child Bite. The shrilling, and impulsively head-bobbing verses of Scum Gene (Trash Vibrato) - are only rivaled in turpitude by Shawn Knight's lyrics; like those of "Smear Where the Face Was" that read: "Drag behind or standing still - Impulse is fear, and fear you will." The lyrics, as a whole, paint a fuzzy picture of fear, paranoia, and despair. Bass player Sean Clancy expands on his unique style with brutal tones and syncopated rhythms that match the band's progression further into the macabre. Brandon Sczomak has made the switch from drums to guitar (who knew?). He has flawlessly adapted to the precedent set by his predecessors, and he is taking it to fantastic new place. If you are a drummer and you are unfamiliar with Moshe Rozenberg (ex-DD/MM/YYYY), just buy this record right away. I would still listen to this record if it were only drums. The beats were also partly written and arranged during pre-production by Detroit drummers: Brandon Moss (Bars of Gold), Matt Rickle (Javelins/Fawn), Brandon Sczomak (current Child Bite guitarist), and Dave Vaughn (Detroit Cobras). The album was recorded with Chris Koltay of High Bias Recordings (Akron/Family) riding the faders. It was mastered by the infamous Weasel Walter (XBXRX, Flying Luttenbachers). British Sea Power are set to release new album ‘Machineries Of Joy. Machineries Of Joy is British Sea Power’s fifth album – seventh including film soundtracks. The album was worked up in the Berwyn mountains in north Wales and recorded in Brighton with the engineer Dan Swift, produced by British Sea Power. The album was mixed by Ken Thomas in rural Hampshire and in Castleford in West Yorkshire. Ken has previously worked with musicians including David Bowie, Wire, Queen, PiL and Sigur Ros. “We’d like to think the album is warm and restorative,” says singer Yan. “Various things are touched on in the words – Franciscan monks, ketamine, French female bodybuilders turned erotic movie stars. The world often seems a mad, hysterical place at the moment. On the heels of three well-received singles comes "Ride Your Heart", the bombastic debut album by LA band BLEACHED. Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That's the goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters. Their first single "Next Stop" epitomizes this movement - fun, raw, adventurous and free. Tossing you out onto the dance floor, hair mussed from make-outs, cigarette still dangling from your fingertips. Raised up deep in the San Fernando Valley, their suburban isolation nurtured the girls creativity, as they started making their own music at a young age. Sneaking into punk shows over the hill in Hollywood, they grew up to become teenaged underground staples at all-ages Downtown DIY venue, The Smell. "Me and Jen were punk kids who weren't taught how to play instruments," says Jessie. We taught ourselves how to play, out in the garage." Eventually signing to Kill Rock Stars and Post Present Medium, their allgirl punk band MIKA MIKO drew international acclaim, landing slots on tours with No Age, Black Lips, and The Gossip. BLEACHED originally formed when the Clavin sisters resolved to continue working with each other upon the break up of MIKA MIKO. Plans were postponed when the sisters joined other bands. Jennifer relocated to New York and toured extensively. With Jennifer away, Jessie began to play with various bands in LA. But in the fleeting moments they found together back home, the songs that became BLEACHED's early 7" singles came together. Since Jennifer moved back to her hometown, BLEACHED now serves as both girls' chief creative outlet. "I was going crazy being in someone else's band," remarked Jennifer. "Me and Jessie are so proud and happy to be able to focus on our own music, together." As a whole, the twelve tracks on "Ride Your Heart" reveal the many facets of BLEACHED's music in a delicious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a new element, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as RAMONES and THE CARS to THE ROLLING STONES and FLEETWOOD MAC. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorus of "Dead In Your Head", the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of "Searching Through The Past" and the pulsating energy and urgency of "Dreaming Without You" and "Outta My Mind", BLEACHED take you on a sweepin' emotional roller coaster that churns and burns. THE BESNARD LAKES' "Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO" had its humble beginnings in mid-2011 and was completed over the course of a year. Ever mindful and attentive to the most subtle and nuanced details, founding band members Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas produced, recorded and mixed at the stalwart Breakglass Studios in Montreal with long time band mates Kevin Laing and Richard White. Eventually mastered by the renowned Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, this fourth album by THE BESNARD LAKES' features heavyweight additions by MOONFACE's Spencer Krug and Mike Bigelow, THE BARR BROTHERS' Sarah Page, the always enchanting Monica Guenter and the return of FIFTH STRING LIBERATION SINGERS' Choir.
