ROGER CHAPMAN and CHARLIE WHITNEY formed the STREETWALKERS in 1974 following the break up of their hegely successful band Family. Streetwalkers proved an instant success both on the live circuit in Europe (particularly in the UK and Germany) and through a number of big selling album releases including "Downtown Flyers", "Vicious But Fair"and the best seller "Red Card". The STREETWALKERS broke up in 1977 following a major UK tour which was duly recorded and released as their final album entitled simply "Live". Following the discovery of the live tapes here is the newly mixed CD of the concert held in front of a huge audience at the DeMontfort Hall in the bands "home town" of Leicester from that 1977 tour. The gig is exciting, the playing superb and it begs the question "why do a band call it a day when they can play like this?". In the late 80s they were regarded as one of the coolest underground rock bands with their bluesy, heartfelt sing-along anthems and ramshackle style. With something exceptional to the norm they did not go unnoticed and appeared on Top of The Pops and MTV, graced the covers of Kerrang!, RAW, and Sounds. They also toured successfully worldwide several times and created a cult like following in UK, Japan and Europe. After the band went their separate ways in the early nineties they briefly got together in 2000 to record "Happy Ever After" then in 2002 opened for Alice Cooper all over Europe and UK. Since then all members have kept their music alive through their own various guises. Frontman Tyla has continued to record many solo albums and tour as a solo artist. He is also a published writer and painter, and has developed a dedicated following. Bassist Steve formed Slyder, a funk blues band and is now a sought after luthier and has opened a successful guitar shop. Guitarist Jo is a frequently hired session musician, painter and sculptor. Drummer Bam toured USA, UK and Japan with his band Bubble and has recently launched his hand forged silver jewellery collection. Over the years fans have campaigned tirelessly for a reunion of sorts and many had given up all hope of ever seeing them back together. However news that a dear friend of the band was in need of urgent medical treatment has inspired these four kind hearts to reunite and raise funds through their music. A key ingredient in the creation of Born Ruffians' new album, Birthmarks, was a remote farmhouse in rural Ontario. The band wanted to return to the days spent writing their debut, Red, Yellow & Blue, wherein they lived together and "whenever we had an idea we could work it out right there that moment." Born Ruffians' often hilarious time spent at the farmhouse was documented on video and shared with fans around the world via YouTube. While some of Birthmarks was born on the farm, many of the songs were conceived long before. Luke Lalonde would write and demo constantly on his laptop, at home, on tour, in Toronto, Montreal, Midland, Australia, France, Germany, anywhere and everywhere inspiration might strike. Several songs were realized during the recording process in the studio. The twelve-track album was written and demoed over the past three years and was produced by Roger Leavens at Boombox Sound in Toronto. Worldwide tour dates in support of the album will be announced soon. "We don't want to tell you about what we think we sound like," says the band's Mitch DeRossier. "We can tell you that this record will sound different. These songs lived with us, toured with us, got drunk with us and made our ears ring. During their 3 years together, they've gone from straight ahead 3 chord lo-fi fuzz pop to 1960s girl group influenced tunes, from experimental, almost atonal drone music to stripped back production on their previous album... and now on this particular release, they delve into electronic beats, crackle, fizz. The band were formed from the ashes of The Manhattan Love Suicides in 2009 by Darren and Caroline and have carved out a cult following since their early lo-fi pop. Their previous albums were all released on Squirrel Records and this one sees the band releasing on Odd Box Records (home to an early EP and the lead singles from this new long player). I first met Lubomyr Melnyk at a festival called Hea Uus Heli in October 2008. We were both scheduled to play that day and I was very excited to see him perform. Before the show I bought several LPs from him and mentioned as much. Lubomyr (more than modest and courteous, as he always is) asked me what I was doing at the festival and I replied that I was also performing at the festival a little later, to which he responded "I'll come and watch you", before being ushered into the hall to play one of the most staggeringly sonorous and beautiful sets I've ever heard. It was overwhelming, full of pathos and I left the hall with those incredible overtones hanging in my ears for hours. A couple of hours later, I was onstage when I glanced up and saw Lubomyr, true to his word, stood in the audience watching me attentively. I felt incredibly nervous. It's not everyday you get to play for someone who has greatly inspired and influenced your own music. After the show, I packed up my guitar and came out to meet the crowd. The first person who greeted me was Lubomyr: friendly. full of enthusiasm and keen to hear about my music, my processes, the way in which I made music. Yet again, I was overwhelmed - for very different reasons. "You have invented continuous music for guitar!" I don't know if that's true or not, but I can't think of an epitaph that would make me prouder. We also spoke about collaborating that night and via e-mail a while after, but it wasn't until January 2012, shortly after I'd moved back to Hastings, England from Ann Arbor, Michigan and Lubomyr played his first ever show in the UK at Cafe Oto that it came to fruition. John Chantler got in touch, said Lubomyr had a free day after his performance and could I come to London for a day, see what happens? He kindly agreed to record the whole thing. We all met at the Vortex Jazz Cafe around midday. We set up, Lubomyr at the grand piano, me directly facing him with my 12-string guitar and began. I would retune at random between songs and together we would find interesting chord progressions, hints of melodies and ways in which to weave those immense overtones that Lubomyr is able to generate on the piano with those of my guitar. No more than two takes per song. Improvisation, spontaneous composition, whatever you want to call it. Either way, it truly felt as if the piano and guitar were as one - inseparable, parts of a bigger whole, a means by which for two people to make one sound. It never felt forced and never less than engaging. Lubomyr was always humble, jovial and open to ideas. The whole session lasted six hours. I'm not a great improviser. I always want to take that raw creative element that the form brings and work upon it, to distill and refine it further. I think Lubomyr feels the same. But there is something about these recordings that would be incredibly difficult to recapture. A small moment in time, feeling perfectly and wonderfully lost within that sound. Garside has released three albums as Maple Bee to date, "Chasing Eva" (2003), "Hello Eve" (2006) and "Home" (2008). "Chasing Eva" was originally released as a double album, but was later re-released with a shortened track list and new artwork as in 2004. The album was entirely written and produced by Garside, except two tracks written in collaboration with cello player Andy Nice and an exotic sounding cover of Doris Day's Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps. Her second album Home was released on Xie Recordings in 2009. Home Recorded at in her house and working alone, the album is both intimate and alarming in equal doses. The photos for the artwork for the album were taken by renowned photographer Bill Ling. While You Were Sleeping was released as an exclusive iTunes three track single and received Alternative Single of The Week' and glowing reviews in the online press. A video for album track No Place was filmed in Garside's home by Emmy Winning Director and Photographer, Kate Schermerhorn. Her forthcoming fourth solo album is entitled "These Four Worlds". It will also be released on Xie Recordings and is due out in the Autumn of 2012. The record also features Sophie Spinoza on Piano and Fender Rhodes and photographer Bill Ling doing Backing Vocals on It Isn't Gonna Be That Way, a cover version taken from Steve Forbert's 1977 seminal Album, Alive on Arrival.
