Acclaimed pop experimentalists Metronomy compile the latest Late Night Tales, the third of 2012 and 29th in the decade long series. Metronomy, the effective alias of the talented Joseph Mount, have thus far released three albums, starting with the jagged electro manoeuvres of their debut ‘Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe)’, through to their two albums on Because, ‘Nights Out’, where Mount first sang, and last year’s brilliant Mercury-nominated ‘The English Riviera’. As a pop group, Metronomy are more Four Tet than Fab Four, though with a sense of adventure that would’ve made the Fabs proud. Their outing under the Late Night Tales banner journeys through the inspirations of the bands’ ever moving sound – along with a few surprises. Mount’s old favourite Autechre is present and correct, but then so are Kate and Anna McGarrigle and the Sun Ra of hip hop Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Joining Sa-Ra on the hip hop front, we’ve got Tweet’s ace ‘Drunk’ from her Hummingbird album alongside OutKast ‘Prototype’, spiced with some Doctor Octagon. For pure pop, they don’t come more refined than Alan Parson’s ‘Eye In The Sky’, who is buffeted by outbreaks of unsettling weirdness, among them the sadly departed Mick Karn’s supple bass figurines on ‘Weather The Windmill’ or Tonto’s Expanding Head Band – the guys that brought the funk to synthesizers with Stevie Wonder – and ‘Cybernaut’. And just when you think you’ve got it figured, Pete Drake arrives with his 1964 pedal steel novelty hit ‘Forever’. This is a maze rather than a journey. Naturally enough, there is the Late Night Tales special with a sparkling Metronomy rendition of Jean-Michel Jarre’s ‘Hypnose’. We’ve always had a soft spot for Devon and her cobbled street delights, but seen through the prism of Joseph Mount, it takes on a new hue that makes Brigitte Bardot and that other, lesser, Riviera seem somehow pallid. The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album "Cold Fact" is the basis for ,Searching For Sugar Man", a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up ,Coming From Reality" - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk. "Searching For Sugar Man", a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest. The film opens in New York, Los Angeles, and London (via Studio Canal) on July 27th and will play in other cities throughout the coming months. Back in the late '70s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, ,Cold Fact" bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled "Coming From Reality" and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to rumours that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire onstage. "Cold Fact"took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away. Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen ugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they'd heard. Their story forms the basis of ,Searching For Sugar Man". Both sides of the story, Rodriguez's life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television's international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as ,Men Who Stare At Goats" (George Clooney) and "The Terminal" (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of ,Searching For Sugar Man" is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself. "I describe myself as 'musico-politico'," Rodriguez said recently. "I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like: We Want Jobs and Stop the War - I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa. Carina recounts, "The first time I saw the painting I stared at it for a long time not understanding why. The absurd image absorbed me. There was an innocent simplicity to it. The gentle putting back together of something most ferocious and wild mysteriously damaged to the point of submission." Tigermending is produced with Grammy nominated writer Dan Burns, Carina collaborated with several notable artists including the legendary Dave Stewart, Brian Eno, and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. Hailing from England, (but currently residing in LA) Carina had an innate determination and passion for music from an early age, which led her to record and self-release her first two albums, First Blood Mystery and The Disconnection. The former shaped by erratic yet engaging sounds drawing from her love of legends Patti Smith, Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley. The latter took those influences into much more powerful and personal realms. These two albums led to her being signed by Interscope Records, who re-released The Disconnection album in 2004. This brought Carina US bound to LA where she recorded her bewitching and seductive album Slow Motion Addict with acclaimed producer, Glen Ballard. A couple of years later, after parting ways with Interscope, Carina toured with Annie Lennox and self-released her ethereal and nakedly confessional EP, Things You Should Know. Her new songs were featured in films & TV shows and a number of radio stations, including KCRW, championed her music. Alt folk singer songwriter duo Max & Laura Braun are siblings. Born in Germany, they started making music together in their early teenage years. But life has since separated them. While Max stayed in Germany, Laura up and left in the late 90s to make London her home. During the following years they only occasionally managed to play and sing together. Finally however, in the rainy late summer of 2008 this changed. Max & Laura spent a few days in one of their favourite places, a little village in Dorset, England, writing their first new songs again after almost ten years. The songs that emerged from this trip, called the "Dorset Songs" were recorded shortly afterwards as a demo and marked the beginning of Max & Laura Braun as a solid musical project. Since then Max and Laura have written more and more songs, have acquired a band and started gigging in Germany as well as in the UK. Their music has grown, darker, fuller and more diverse in it's influences since those simple "Dorset Songs". Percussive drumming, melodic bass lines and shimmering pedal steel sounds ad facets beyond folk to Max and Laura's guitar playing and vocals that sit together so smoothly like perhaps only those of a brother and sister can. “With the success of Bjork, GusGus and Sigur Ros, Iceland is well and truly established as a source of new and interesting music, and I don’t know whether it’s just good fortune or perhaps grand design, but the artists that we get to hear in the UK rarely swim too close to the mainstream. So it is with Reykjavík singer-songwriter Ragga Gröndal. Her songs, sung in English, straddle several styles from jazz to folk, but at no point does she pander to conventional contemporary expectations. Of course, there are influences on her music, and as “Astrocat Lullaby” plays out, it’s artists such as Kate Bush and Tori Amos that come to mind. That’s decent company to keep, and Gröndal bears the comparison well, because her songs are good enough and she never settles into one signature style. The album begins with “Bangsi”, which is propelled by assorted percussion, with Gröndal’s voice carrying the melody – think a calmer, gentler Creatures. The title track is perfectly twee, with her voice a shade higher and the accompaniment decidedly tender. “If Cats Could Talk” is the sort of piano ballad that, in more adventurous times, would have found a home on daytime radio, and sold a million. The long awaited new album from Aimee Mann, Charmer is set for release on Superego Records.
