35007 is the code name for a projectile with a unique sound. Ranging from firm grooves drenched in multiple layers of sound and hypnotic riffs to flowing soundscapes. A fine combination of past and future in influences and technique. This sound has been captured on the very well-received albums "Especially for You" - 1994 (remastered and rereleased in '99) and "35007" - 1997, released exactly 50 years after Chuck Yeager's first sonic boom. These albums contain instrumental as well as tracks with vocals. The 10" / CDM "Sea of Tranquillity" - 2001, marked the appearance of 35007 MARK IV as well as the shift to even more hypnotic instrumental terrain. It goes beyond the conventional rock formula and astonished critics and audience. It was followed in 2002 by the fully instrumental sound track "Liquid", which continued to expand the boundaries of their sonic universe. The album contains 4 voluminous tracks which take the listener on a surprising and sometimes unexpected journey. On the latest release, "Phase V", 35007 continue the fully instrumental journey, this time leading into more abstract terrain, led by the roman philosopher Boethius (480-526) who stated that "music is mathematics made audible". With the digit 5 hovering predominantly, the album is about numbers and sounds. No words, no images. The new album has already been nicknamed "songs for the blind", appropriately "visualized" by the minimal and sensuous artwork. Without the benefit of vision, the ears seem to work much better. Phase V is an intermediate state. No physical manifestation is to be expected in the foreseeable future, only time will tell what the next phase will be. Over the many years of their existence, Chicago avant-garde metal band YAKUZA were always seen as an underrated and under appreciative entity within the heavy music scene. Samson began recording the album in a house shared with five others, and so he had to balance (hey!) his work; waiting for times when the house was quiet enough to make music but without disturbing the others in their slumber. The hushed approach gives Balance a four-in-the-morning feel – not in the alcohol-fuelled comedown sense, but rather capturing the sense of wonder at the first rays of dawn on the horizon, the birds warming up their voices, the feeling of nature awakening again while most humans sleep on. Although the record was completed in a more sympathetic recording environment, the spirit of the earlier work was retained; it’s an album that relies more on feel than on melody. That’s not to say there aren’t tunes on Balance; it’s hard not to be swept along by the lilting guitar of “Painting The Horizon”, for example, but the overall impression is not what Samson is saying but how he’s saying it. Where many home-recordists tend toward a crunchy digital sound, this music is full of analogue spaces, made up of sounds that would be removed by other artists and engineers. The result is an album that’s warm and welcoming, like a hot bath at the end of a busy day. Style: Indie-Pop

Tim Maia was the man. A soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites, he revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s. He also married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult. After a decade of legal wrangling, Luaka Bop is set to release 'Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia' a fifteen track survey of Maia's 1970s recordings, completely remastered, commemorating what would have been the Brazilian musical legend's 70th birthday on September 28. The release is the fourth in the label's World Psychedelic Classics series, known for unearthing long neglected masterworks by Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, and one of the first compilations of African psychedelia and funk. Tim Maia's story is the stuff of legend, and indeed he is the subject of a best-selling biography, TV movie, and hit musical in Brazil. Growing up in Rio, he formed his first band at age 14 and taught local gang members to play guitar. In 1959, aged 17, he illegally emigrated to Tarrytown, NY where he studied communications, worked as a janitor, and formed a new band, The Ideals. Four years later he was jailed and deported for smoking marijuana in a stolen car. He returned to Brazil deeply inspired by American soul music and the civil rights movement and began writing songs in earnest. Maia's 1970 debut LP has been called "a massive cannonball into the pool" of Brazilian culture, the ripples of which are still visible today. The album linked Brazilian pop music and American soul in a way that was genuinely new, and it spent 24 weeks on the charts. Other landmark recordings would follow, but in 1976, Maia joined the Racional Energy cult, at which point he shed his vices, dressed in white robes, and performed and recorded only for cult members. Maia would later distance himself from Racional Energy, but the mythos surrounding him only grew. He died, 55 years old and obese, after an onstage heart attack in 1998.
