COWBELL are Jack Sandham and Wednesday Lyle. The duo play garage/soul/rock n roll and write songs that combine a lyrical charm and ease with a sound that's full-bodied and powerful in spite of their stripped-down set-up. They take their influences from both sides of the Atlantic with a love for both the output of U.S labels such as Stax, Motown and Sun and for British sixties R and B bands such as The Small Faces, The Kinks and The Zombies. The pair had been friends for a long time when in the in summer of 2009 Wednesday decided to start playing the drums. Jack had been involved in bands before but was playing solo shows when Wednesday asked if he'd come along and play guitar. It felt good straight away and they started writing songs and played their first gig together just one month later. They released their first single "Oh Girl" in July 2010 on Stovepony Records and it quickly picked up on BBC 6 Music and XFM. This led to the band being asked to release their second single "Never Satisfied" with Too Pure Singles Club (Beggars Group). In November 2010 "Never Satisfied" was single of the week on both BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music which coincided with a tour supporting the newly reformed Britpop legend CAST on all dates of their UK Tour. In spring 2011 the band went back into the studio to record their third single "Hanging by a Thread". They chose to go back (for the 3rd time) to Gizzard Studio, an all analogue studio run by Ed Deegan. They have found that recording to tape using old analogue equipment ideally suits their stripped back sound and aesthetic. They decided to self-release this song on their own label "Cool Jerk Records" on limited edition 7'' vinyl (in keeping with both previous singles). After a busy summer of gigging Jack and Wednesday went back to Gizzard to work on their debut album. As well as a handful of their signature garage pop songs the album showcases more diversity, from the down-home country style finger picking of "All in Good Time" to the Delta Slide on the rollicking "Tallulah". It also sees the introduction of Wednesday singing lead vocal on two songs: the honky-tonk garage blues of "Love Got me Down" and the ethereal "Castle Walls". Style: Garage Rock

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a new edition of the classic 1973 album THE MACHINE THAT CRIED by STRING DRIVEN THING – re-mastered from the original Charisma Records master tapes. Formed in Glasgow in 1967 around the husband and wife CHRIS ADAMS and PAULINE ADAMS and JOHN MANNION, by 1972 the band had moved from their purely folk roots and had signed to CHARISMA RECORDS, recording their self-titled album for the label with new members GRAHAM SMITH (violin) and COLIN WILSON (bass, guitar). For their 1973 album, THE MACHINE THAT CRIED, the band was expanded further by the addition of drummer BILLY FAIRLEY. This record was arguably the finest ever released by the band, featuring such classics as ‘HEARTFEEDER’, the album’s title track and ‘SOLD DOWN THE RIVER’. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been newly re-mastered from the original CHARISMA RECORDS master tapes and features two bonus tracks drawn from the band’s 1973 single and a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay. Steve Vai can be astonishingly, almost frighteningly nonrepetitive, and on his masterful new album, The Story Of Light, he travels to new places, both sonically and emotionally. “As you evolve as a player, you keep going out on a limb," Vai says. "Sometimes it pays off, and I know for me, this album has been a very rewarding experience." Vai recorded The Story Of Light in stages, beginning around January of 2010. During this time, he surrendered to what he calls a "certain cavalier attitude" that he says is relatively new to him. "I threw caution to the wind," he says, "because really, what do I have to be cautious about? Age comes into play here. You start to think, I may not have a lot of time left here, so what do I really want to say? And what’s the worst that can happen? That I’ll fail? I don’t feel as if I have anything to lose. I don’t have to pander to radio or record companies, so I can stick to my own artistic sensibilities. If I remain true to what’s in my heart, that’s all the success I need." The record is largely instrumental, but there are some bracing vocal moments: Vai himself sings on the heartbreakingly personal The Moon and I. Elsewhere, he's joined by guests such as Aimee Mann, who duets with him on the compelling No More Amsterdam (she also co-wrote the song), and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice, who tears it up with Vai on a version of Blind Willie Johnson's John The Revelator, a track so forceful that it deserves to be called controversial. Other musicians who contribute to The Story Of Light are guitarist Dave Weiner, drummer Jeremy Colson, bassist Philip Bynoe and harpist/multi-instrumentalist Deborah Henson-Conant, all of whom will be joining Vai when he takes to the road in August. Of the record in whole, Vai enthuses that it has "everything I like on my albums: big, intense compositional pieces; dense harmonics; really stripped-down guitar, bass and drum tracks, and the soaring seventh song ballad that just takes off into the unknown. "So there’s a continuity of diversity, of different atmospheres, and it comes down to what I hope is a purity of vision – that’s what I shoot for, at least.
