This is Carla dal Forno's debut solo album, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of F ingers and Tarcar. Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone - stoned and deadpan - but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. This voice is the perfect embodiment of dal Forno's emotionally ambiguous songs: their lyrics rooted in the everyday, observing and exposing a series of uncomfortable truths. ast Moving Cars' and hat You Gonna Do Now?' weigh up claustrophobia against loneliness, inertia against acceleration, doubling down versus taking off; the title track acknowledges the provisional nature of love and real intimacy, then decides to brave it anyway. By the time we arrive at the startlingly sparse The Same Reply', the sense of dejection is absolute. The vocal-led pieces are interspersed with richly evocative instrumentals. Smothered in tape-hiss and reverb, the seasick synthesizer miniatures talian Cinema' and 'Dragon Breath' channel the twilit DIY whimsy of Flaming Tunes and Call Back The Giants. 'DB Rips drum machine and bassline are pure Chicago house, but then its dark choral drones nod to Dalis Car's dreams of blood-spattered Cornwall stone. Sunset Mission from 2000 finally gets a proper vinyl release. Tip! Sunset Mission, their third album, was originally released in 2000 and is similar to Midnight Radio, more overtly jazzy perhaps, with the addition of smokey tenor saxophone to their piano/drums/bass lineup. Their original US distributor (electronica/techno label Studio K-7) labeled this ambient, but that's far from the mark. From the song titles (Prowler, On Demon Wings, Black City Skyline, Darkstalker) to the packaging (photos of nighttime Berlin and dangerous weaponry) to the music (a downtempo film noir soundtrack like the slowest, dirgiest Melvins played by Morphine, darker than Photek, moody and gorgeous) this is the nightmare ambience of a nowhere jazz-lounge you'll never leave alive. It was only last year that Shirley Collins celebrated her 80th Birthday in fine style which included an intimate gathering in the basement of Cecil Sharp House where she treated her gathered fans to song. Folk Radio UK were at this auspicious event which James McKinnon reviewed here. One thing that stuck with me from that review was this: When asked by compere and former English Folk Dance and Song Society Library Director Malcolm Taylor why she has chosen now to break her silence she mulls the question over for some time before concluding “Because I can’t give up. I’m still utterly enthralled by songs and I’m still learning new ones at 80.” Clearly, not a truer word said as Domino records have just announced that they are to release a new Shirley Collins album called Lodestar which will be released on 4th November. This release marks her return to recording after 38 years. The first track to be shared from Lodestar is ‘Cruel Lincoln’. Shirley explains the history of the song: “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge”. Produced and recorded with long-term collaborator Erland Cooper, with orchestrations by Peel, both in their own, richly analogue studio in Shoreditch, London and at Attica Audio in County Donegal, Ireland, her new solo album wake But Always Dreaming' is a record about memory: the luminous and beautiful formation of memories and the devastating loss or slow, insidious damage to the mind. Peel has created an exquisite, distinct album of two halves, full of vibrant, direct colour in the early stages contrasted with esoteric, dreamscape, legato movements towards the end. The bright, raw magic and joy of personal relationships are set alongside the gradual loss of her grandmother to dementia. A childhood spent in the landscape of the Irish coast inspires a sense of openness in the music - places to roam and investigate - but there's also a complex, darker, percussive thrust to these songs, as adult city life intrudes and, in its own way, inspires. The album has the feel of a dream where all of daily life is being expressed and decoded, from feverish rush-hours to the old sunlight of her grandmother's fading memories. Peel switches from panoramic city images in tanding On The Roof Of The World' to the dissolving, hallucinogenic moments that define the second half of the album. The album's closer is a cover of Paul Buchanan's (The Blue Nile) Cars In The Garden' which returns memory to childhood - "find the place that we forgot."
