Produced by Adrian Younge, Angela Munoz, a 18-year-old Los Angeles native, debuts her hypnotic voice with her new album released on Linear Labs. This prolific artist is a prodigy, writing and singing music beyond her tender years. Her captivating voice carries strength and prowess, cultivated by a myriad of first-hand experiences and training in the art of sound. At the age of 5, she discovered her distinctive voice and was considered an “Old Soul.” She began to play instruments such as guitar and piano. With practice, Munoz began to dominate singing competitions, leaving unexpected audiences in a trance. Throughout the years, she trained herself by attending a performing arts middle school and high school in the heart of Los Angeles. Many of the artists were introduced to her by her older brother (writing partner) Brandon Munoz. As an avid music collector, artists such as Nirvana, Donny Hathaway, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest and Cortex began to make an imprint on her sound. A few years ago, her brother introduced her to Something About April, a record produced by Adrian Younge. The quality of the music left her intrigued. Shortly thereafter, she serendipitously found herself working with “The Midnight Hour,” a group comprised of Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (formally of A Tribe Called Quest). In 2018, they debuted her song “Bitches do Voodoo,” on their eponymously titled album The Midnight Hour; they also took Angela on tour, featuring her on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Angela Munoz is an old soul that finds solace in the sound of an orchestra, turntables, or the randomness that fuels her youthful energy; a prodigy who stands by her uniqueness, even if it doesn’t satisfy the status-quo. She believes the heart of music is emotion and this is where she finds her personal liberty and strength. With her commanding presence, she is destined to become a cannon in music for years to come.

Legally blind from birth, Brazilian keyboard player, composer and bandleader Manfredo Fest learnt to read music in braille and began studying classical music at a young age. By 17 he had fallen in love with jazz (particularly the music of fellow blind pianist George Shearing) before becoming swept up in Rio's emergent bossa nova movement in the sixties. Moving to the States in 1967 where he would go on to work with fellow countryman Sergio Mendes, Fest recorded and self-released Brazilian Dorian Dream in 1976, enlisting Thomas Kini (bass), Alejo Poveda (drums, percussion) and Roberta Davis (vocals). Like a turbo-powered, intergalactic elevator ride, Brazilian Dorian Dream builds on the principle of the modal diatonic scales of the Dorian mode, with influences of Brazilian rhythms, North American jazz and funk, and music of the European baroque and romantic era. The coming together of these intergenerational and intercontinental styles coupled with Fest's visionary use of the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Arp and Moog synthesizers (plus a whole load of effects units), makes for an album light years ahead of its time. The miraculous wordless vocals of American jazz singer Roberta Davis are nailed so tightly alongside Manfredo's keys and mind-bending synths that it sounds almost alien. On the album's liner notes, Fest preaches Davis' ability highlighting how hard it is to sing such precise intervals so accurately. One of the tracks on which the vocals shine brightest is space funk stepper "Jungle Cat", which features hard funky drums, freaky synth lines and expert Rhodes comping. The track builds up and up before releasing into the unmistakable scat melody in the chorus.

Multi-instrumentalist, author, composer, producer, arranger. Born in Milan in 1973 he began studying flute at 11 years of age and then devoted himself to guitar, vocals, piano, bass, and finally drums. In one of her first groups, she involves Patrizia Di Malta who becomes the official singer of the MamaFunk group In 2000 he managed to have his first contract as author/composer with Peer Music and immediately placed a song in Taiwan for a famous singer from Taipei. He begins to write for several artists on the Italian scene including Mario Venuti, Irene Grandi, Neri Per Caso, signs a song with Zucchero Fornaciari (author of the text) for his daughter Irene. In 2008 he released the song “Vivere in Italy” of which he will be the interpreter under the pseudonym of Nino Moroni and which will remain at the top of the Radio DeeJay chart for several weeks. In 2011 he began collaborating with Mario Biondi and with Jean-Paul Maunik (Bluey from the band ‘Incognito’) with whom he wrote two songs for Mario, of which he is still the author and multi-instrumentalist on tour since 2015. He also collaborates with Alain Clark for Mario Biondi. In 2019, after many years spent behind the scenes, he decided to go out with his own album thanks to the meeting with Umberto Damiani of Irma Records. The album collects songs from a decade between soul, funk, jazz, reggae and tropical rhythms. Italy is a Strange Place, the first single excerpt (as well as the album title), speaks of the inability of his country, Italy, to enhance his artistic/cultural/environmental potential, conditions he shares, maybe that’s why he waited so long before releasing his album

More Swiss jazz bliss! We Release Jazz (Ryo Fukui’s Scenery and Mellow Dream, Marc Moulin’s Placebo Live 1971…) is madly happy to unleash another reissue from Geneva’s very own Boillat Thérace Quintet. The My Greatest Love album features none other than bebop and hard-bop legend Benny Bailey and is available for the first time since 1975 on vinyl LP as well as digipack CD. Galvanized by the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival in the late 60s and lively local scenes, jazz music was healthy and booming in Switzerland in the 1970s. One band that beautifully captured this energy was Jean-François Boillat and Raymond Thérace’s Boillat Thérace Quintet whose self-titled debut and impressive Montreux appearance set the tone for quality Helvetic jazz in 1974. Following this first excellent impression, the Boillat-Thérace ensemble connected with American trumpeter Benny Bailey and recorded the magnificent My Greatest Love in May and June of 1975. The modal, hard bop and soul-jazz gem includes first-class takes on Freddie Hubbard’s “Gibraltar”, Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa”, and Jimmy Heath’s “Gemini”, plus deliciously funky originals from the Geneva crew, including the upbeat “Le Colin” and the swaying fan-favorite “Prompt” and its thrilling solos. Bailey is on trumpet and flugelhorn, Boillat on Fender Rhodes and piano, Thérace on saxophone and flute, Roger Vaucher on Fender bass, Eric Wespi on drums, and Rogelio Garcia on percussion and tenor saxophone…heavy sessions and deep vibes! Eleven songs that captivate in their simplicity and with which she finally leaves the status of an insider tip behind. The London singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and producer moves in a musically creative intermediate realm of jazz, alternative pop, soul and gospel. Julia Biel manages to combine intellectual ambition and emotionality. Her voice reflects the experience of hope and privation, of grief and happiness. Julia Biel is not one of the great vocal acrobats, but her compositions are imbued with her unique, grandiose voice leading and her magical magic immediately captures the listener and never lets go. Recorded in her own studio, produced by her longtime partner Idris Rahman and mixed by Emre Ramazanoglu, the music is enchanting from the very first note. Born in England with British and German nationality and with South African roots, she accompanies herself on the black and white keyboard of the piano and at the same time fights against any polarizing black and white thinking. Her music creates soundscapes through which she wants to reach people emotionally. At the same time she confronts the listeners with her attitude, shakes them up, fights against injustice. "Because on the level of shared emotions, people can discover common ground," says Julia. "Skin colour, socialisation, political persuasion or any other social construct should not have any influence on our ability to understand the other person, to put ourselves in their place. Nor should anyone be allowed to be prejudiced, to deny someone the right to express human feelings in all their facets." Their songs are about confusion, pain, uncertainty, joy and sadness, permeated by touching poetry and the not always easy coping with everyday life. This dialectic, of melancholic vitality and tangible authenticity, gives her a very own artistic claim. Even if some names of great vocalists are repeatedly referred to in reference to Julia Biel: on "Black And White, Volume 1" she sets her own standards, which will certainly influence other singers.
