That's the most intense fear and feeling-when you go to a show and you're actually scared," says frontman Oliver Ackermann, guitarist and frontman of Brooklyn trio A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS. "Or you can palpably feel the danger in the music," adds bassit Lunadon, "Like it's going to fall apart at any moment and the players doing it are so in the moment they don't give a shit about anything else. They're just going for it. It's a gutter kinda vibe; everything about it is icky and evil and dangerous." The same could be said for A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS' fourth album, "Transfixiation". Rather than fixate on precious recording techniques and minute details like they may have done in the past, the group, rounded out by drummer Robi Gonzalez, trust their instincts and try to keep things as pure as possible. Music is much more exhilarating when it's unpredictable even on repeat plays. Gonzalez makes his recording debut with the band here, and it's obvious that he's helped pushed the band's recordings closer to the level of their infamous live shows. From the tortured straight-to-tape transmission of "I Will Die" and molten funk melodies of "Straight" to the violent guitar spasms, cannon-like drums and not-so-idle threats of "Deeper," this is very much an unpredictable record. "The one thing we have in common is this fire when we're playing," says Gonzalez. "I don't know; it's real intense." "It's not rocket science," says Lunadon, "but rock 'n' roll shouldn't be. ORKA is a Faroese act based in London. When ORKA started in 2006 they began with building instruments on a small farm on the Faroe Islands before even writing songs. ORKA has since then played venues and festivals all over the world and done collaborations with a number of prominent acts including YANN TIERSEN, LV [Hyperdub], OKTOPUS [DÄLEK], GRETA SVABO BECH [DEADMAU5], EIV¥R and TEITUR. Now ORKA is ready with their 4th full-length album "Leipzig". For ORKA's last tour the band had a few days off and managed to record the bulk of the album at UT Connewitz; a spectacular and worn down pre-war cinema in the heart of Leipzig, Germany. Other recordings were done on tour in Paris, New York, a small church in Sibrandahûs, Netherlands, a boat in Hong Kong and a train terminal in Bombay. The album was then finalized and patched together in ORKA's London studio. The first working titles for tracks were Leipzig I, Leipzig II, III etc, because they were "works in progress" and "jams" which then later became real tracks. The "Sibrandahús" titled tracks have that title, simply because they were recorded in a church in Sibrandahus in Holland. When all tracks were made and got a real title, ORKA Mastermind Jens L. Thomsen felt it somehow right to keep the working titles. It looks somehow exciting and special, like titles from a classical body of work. This is also how Jens sees the album, like one big body of work, and not just a collection of songs. The songs flow together and the album has a cohesive structure. The titles are also telling you where theyïre recorded (Paris, Leipzig, Sibrandahus) and which one was made first etc. Two tracks were made in Jensïstudio in London ("The End" & "Black Ice Age"), which he wanted to have ordinary titles, as to break away from the rest of the tracklist. Also the track "The End" indicates that Side A is ending and from here the album changes direction and atmosphere. On "Leipzig" ORKA's trademark custom instruments and dark sound are fused with resounds from UK Bass and LA Beat topped with icy North Atlantic vocals. The resulting genre is what ORKA call Club Gaze. If compared to other artists, one could say that the album sounds likes J DILLA's Donuts if it was produced by BURIAL, with the Nordic melodic sensibility of SIGUR RàS, and performed by FAUST.
