Maurice Deebank recorded his instrumental solo debut for the seminal Cherry Red imprint in 1984 while still the guitarist in Felt, the pastoral English pop group led by the notorious eccentric Lawrence Hayward (best known simply as Lawrence). Felt's early albums Crumbling the Anti-septic Beauty, The Splendour of Fear and Ignite the Seven Cannons and Set Sail for the Sun were marked by melancholy guitar interplay and a lofty pop sensibility, but Inner Thought Zone illustrates how significant Deebank's role was in crafting Felt's signature sound. Seven-minute album centerpiece "Silver Fountain of Paradise Square" and "Study No. 1" make beautiful use of supple arpeggios whimsically bent into cyclical structures in and around which Deebank weaves solos. His performance is nuanced and dynamic, undermining his own technical skill for the sake of expression, and it's easy to hear Inner Thought Zone as an exposition of the increasing introspection that led to his departure from Felt. Glistening chords, synthesizer flourishes and breezy plateaus of exaltation collide with the sense of loss and isolation generally explored by Deebank's peers in the post- punk era, but rarely with as much impeccable grace and finesse Record Label: 1972 Style: Independent

Starting in the mid-'80s as a bedroom-recording project by vocalist Yamatsuka Eye, Boredoms attracted widespread recognition in the early-'90s alternative music scene; their arty, aggressive approach to hardcore, punk and psychedelia gained fervent champions in kindred experimentalists such as Sonic Youth and John Zorn and has provided an indelible influence on the noise-rock scene ever since. 1992's Pop Tatari was comparatively accessible in relation to the band's early Eye-helmed recordings. Released stateside on Reprise Records, it generated an enormous amount of excitement among the open-minded edges of the alternative nation and earned the group a spot on 1994's Lollapalooza festival. Its imaginative concoction of primitive hard rock and sludge-punk bluster, short-attention-span performance art, cartoon scores, screaming psych and sharp short blasts of brutal, cutting funk / rap was marked by an undercurrent of demented humor. The album's textures and volumes change and shift in an extreme manner, abiding by its own sonic logic and collection of disparate influences; its cacophonous fusion was so far ahead of every other musical endeavor that it still sounds futuristic. It continues to be considered one of the most "out" recordings ever released by a major label. While its creation lies in the seeds of musical adventures sown by Captain Beefheart, Devo, Minor Threat and Merzbow, Pop Tatari has forged its own cult of equally important art-rock bands and aficionados such as Mr. Bungle / Mike Patton, Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt. Showing no signs of toning down their aural assault, Boredoms replaced their hard rock sludgery and funk / rap experiments with abrasive, no-wave feedback and distorted tribal explorations on 1994's screeching Chocolate Synthesizer. Yamatsuka Eye's vocals are more ominous, and the trance-like grooves that the band would explore to great success later in their career first appear here. The album is a masterful bookend to the first part of their violently grinning, noise-rock ouvre. Not content with repeating themselves, Boredoms tone things down with the almost ambient "Synthesizer Guidebook on Fire," while "Shock City" is the band's own gonzo take on traditional Japanese folk music. Prog rock rears its head on songs like the pounding krautrock / metal epic "Acid Police," and the title track brings in shards of synth and percussion for a brief, dreamy respite. All of this, and Chocolate Synthesizer still offers a healthy dose of Boredoms' trademark harsh atmospherics, insane vocals, skewed guitar riffage and sound-collage absurdity. Overall, the album comes off as more musically intricate than its predecessor with time-signature changes and steadier loud-quiet dynamics added to the game plan. It points to directions in which the band would soon take their sound, while retaining their mischievous, B-movie tendencies. Noise rock has continued to evolve in the underground, but few bands have come close to touching the expansive genius of Boredoms' seminal work Record Label: 1972 Style: Alternative Rock

Stereolab's fourth full-length, Emperor Tomato Ketchup marked the point where the band evolved from a purely underground phenomenon to an important pop group capable of selling albums while keeping their hipness and integrity intact. At the time of its release, it was simultaneously their most experimental and most accessible release, with the deliberate raw textures of earlier works replaced by a more polished vibe. The album was also their greatest success to date both commercially and critically, and remains a consensus favorite even now. Continuing to mine the music of the '60s and early '70s, Stereolab employs Farfisas and Moogs, melodies from Bacharach and Hardy, soft-rock, bubblegum, dub and hip-hop sounds to augment their core influences of krautrock, punk, jazz and space rock. Odd time-signatures and deft layering techniques are more crucial to the arrangements, and the grooves on tracks like "Metronomic Underground" and "Les Yper-Sound" add a level of funk to the mix, while the album also includes clear and catchy pop songs like "Cybele's Reverie" and "The Noise of Carpet." Emperor Tomato Ketchup brings many elements to the table, but Stereolab puts them all together into a coherent vision. It's hard to say if the album's greatest accomplishment is making pop music palatable to experimental listeners or introducing pop listeners to the group's experimental influences. Either way, it's one of the most enjoyable and important albums of the '90s. "Stereolab released countless singles, EPs, and full-lengths during the 1990s, but Emperor Tomato Ketchup remains their most definitive and recommended statement. For a group that reveled in resurrecting Continental obscurity, from Neu! to Krzysztof Komeda, Emperor Tomato Ketchup sounded wholly futuristic and alien Record Label: 1972 Style: Indie-Pop

Dots and Loops is Stereolab's fifth studio album and the first to completely ditch the motorik drone that had been a trademark since their inception; predominated by lush lounge and jazz textures, it showcases the band's most complex set of rhythms yet. Stereolab is aided by members of The High Llamas (like-minded travelers in the production of whimsical '60s sounds), Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, and John McEntire of post-rock pioneers Tortoise. The album was recorded in Chicago and Düsseldorf and bridges a unique American-Euro influence. The new rhythmic approach separates Dots and Loops from the band's previous output, as does a Beach Boys influence which adds to the band's standard brand. Bossa Nova and '60s Euro pop are still major touchstones and give the album a deceptively light vibe; however, further listens reveal an elaborate work, with almost every track featuring odd time-signatures and more complicated and layered arrangements. "Parsec" is space-rock meets drum and bass; "Brakhage" marries a minor key bass line to clinking vibes and a shuffling beat; the segmented, 20-minute "Refractions in the Plastic Pulse" is sunny and appealing, yet intricately constructed. The dividing line between the band's first phase and what would be its more experimental latter period, Dots and Loops is the type of album that reveals its charms over many listens and is the one Stereolab aficionados point to as the band's best work.
