“I was just into music,” says Joe Camilleri of his earliest days playing in bands. “That was all I was interested in. I would live it, breathe it, eat it.” Forty-eight albums later, and his 20th – Faithful Satellite – with The Black Sorrows, and if anything he’s even more passionate than he ever was. He and longtime songwriting partner Nick Smith pretty much write every day and ask Joe about a favourite song in his vast catalogue and he’ll tell you – the next one. Sure, he’s kicked a staggering number of goals over his 50+ years in music as a singer, songwriter, musician, performer and producer at the top of his game. As frontman of the seminal 70’s band, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Joe was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007. With The Black Sorrows, there have been hits not only in Australia but also in Europe. Touring there several times playing songs that have become radio staples like Chained to the Wheel, Harley & Rose and Hold On To Me. There was an ARIA Award for Best Group in 1990, and last year their Endless Sleep album was nominated for the 2015 ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album, the band's 19th nomination. Returning for the first time in 20 years, The Black Sorrows toured Scandinavia in support of the release of Endless Sleep that reached #13 on the Euro Americana chart in 2015. There have been multi-platinum albums and, collectively, sales of over two million records worldwide. The Black Sorrows, in one form or another, haven’t stopped recording or performing since Joe pulled the thing together in 1983 – and he’s still playing 150 shows a year! His energy seems boundless, matched only by the passion and commitment with which he approaches every song, every record, every performance. Always prolific, he took the band into the studio with 30 songs from which 20 made the final cut for Faithful Satellite. And pretty much all bases are covered as the songs tumble through every kind of genre that has inspired Joe as a writer and passionate music lover himself over the years. The album – available as a single CD or vinyl double-LP – is a kind of celebratory journey through the most vibrant musical styles of 20th-century contemporary music and yet is always totally, unmistakably Joe Camilleri. “I’ve always cast a wide net,” he admits, and why not? That’s what keeps things exciting after all; for the artist and for the listener. “And it’s a good rockin’ band!” Together, they deliver a glorious potpourri that takes in gospel, zydeco, reggae, Texas swing, old-school R&B, soul, gospel, dub, even noir – shiver in the slinky It Ain’t Ever Gonna Happen – and so much more by turns, delivered in one big, sassy, sometimes brassy, always spirited package. No, the legendary Silos have not been buried! It's just that from time to time their frontman has a mind to release material that may not be a perfect fit for the band or otherwise different under his own name: Walter Salas-Humara! The name is as unique as the man! More than 30 years ago this very versatile artist came on the scene as the mastermind of alt.country-rock pioneers The Silos. Since then he has not only kept this cult band alive as a vital creative force with a sizeable output but also worked on numerous other interesting and far-ranging projects. In the summer of 2014 Blue Rose released Curve & Shake, his first solo album in 18 years. And now here's the next one, Work: Part One. It features new versions of important songs from his long career. Work: Part One consists of re-imaginings of material originally recorded for the first three successful Silos albums - very different acoustic versions, tailor-made for the current alt.folk/Americana scene. The Silos from New York with songwriter, guitarist and singer Walter Salas-Humara as their creative heart were - starting in 1985 - one of those critics' darlings bands - like Velvet Underground, the later Byrds, Television, the Feelies or Green On Red - who were ahead of their time or just too good to sell as much of their eminently influential music as they deserved. They stood for sensitive, intelligent, hooky, American indie-pop-goes-alt.country-rock of major league quality. No wonder the critics loved them and there was nary a year-end best list without the Silos. The 90s were dominated by Walter Salas-Humara's restlessness and hunger for experiment. He moved from New York to L.A. to Austin which led to stylistic shifts and rotating band personnel. With alt.country, No Depression and Americana booming, the Silos became one band among many and had to re-establish their status as frontrunners of the genre. They succeeded in doing so with a string of popular albums on Blue Rose between 2001 and 2006 and again in 2011 with the excellent Florizona. This was followed by the solo album Curve And Shake. Walter Salas-Humara cemented his status as an important indie musician and darling of the Alt-Americana/No Depression scene. While Curve And Shake had its share of stylistic U-turns and a variety of different vibes - due to the adventurous coupling of material from various sessions with differing musicians -, Work: Part One is a surprisingly homogenous, organically grown, mature production. Teaming up with the experienced multi-instrunentalist and producer Rich Brotherton, Walter Salas-Humara really hit a high point in his recording career. Brotherton is one of Austin's local treasures, a songwriter sidekick with tons of musical experience and excellence and the ability to create a relaxed, creative atmosphere. He has worked with Bruce & Charlie Robison, Robert Earl Keen, Caroline Herring, Mary Gauthier, Eliza Gilkyson and many more. On this album he functions as a bonafide Americana orchestra playing acoustic guitars, mandolin, dobro, banjo and zither as well as singing harmonies along with Amy Allison. Violin and viola are added by Mary Rowell who also played on most early Silos albums. Yes, those early Silos albums ... they are the focal point of Work: Part One! First there was the mini-LP debut About Her Steps in 1985, then the masterpiece Cuba in 1987 which had an enormous influence on the early underground No Depression genre, and closing out one of indie rock's finest trilogies, there was The Silos in 1990, the only album Salas-Humara ever released on a major label (RCA). It's wonderful to become reacquainted with ten classic Silos songs. The sophisticated composition of 'Going Round', a sensitive chamber folk take on 'For Always', a six-minute 'I'm Over You' with twanging twin acoustic guitar picking and 'Shine It Down' in a straight acoustic folk rock arrangement. And then there's the "woman name songs": the album opener 'Susan', later 'Mary's Getting Married', 'Caroline' and 'Margret' in subtle string band arrangements with violin and mandolin. Anything missing? Yes, two more killer tracks. The bittersweet story of 'Commodore Peter' with banjo accompaniment and Amy Allison's harmonies and the grand finale 'Tennessee Fire' in a first-rate 6-plus minutes alt.folk/story song/acoustic jam rock version: "Driving by the moonlight, haven't seen a service station in about fifty miles or so, I sing along to the radio." The film highlights early 1800s Austin, the psychedelic movement, Armadillo World Headquarters, and numerous iconic musical inflection points that shaped the American musical culture of today. Vintage photos, rare posters, and never seen before video footage are presented with a soundtrack that truly inspires and reveals why Austin is such a magical epicenter of music. This feature length documentary builds to a climax as the storyline weaves its way towards an all-star live concert. On May 19, 2007 an unprecedented event called the Road to Austin was unveiled to an audience of 20,000 people in Austin, Texas. Led by internationally acclaimed musical director, and GRAMMY award winning producer, Stephen Bruton. The lineup was developed to include multiple genres of music, including poetry and opera. The production attempted to blend and blur this artistic diversity in order to deliver many never-seen-before collaborations. The panoply of celebrity headliners (including Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, Ian McLagan, Eric Johnson) heightened the impact of the evenings apex and afforded Austins local artists an opportunity to have these legends accompany them during their performances. Heartland rocker LEEROY STAGGER from Canada is an extremely productive and creative musician. A mere year-and-a-half after his much-lauded and award-winning Radiant Land album he surprises us with his next bull's eye-hit. Although the band is not credited on the cover this time around, there's a lot of team spirit on this album. Truth Be Sold is the title of this excellent, his 8th studio oeuvre and a real statement album. It brings us a look back on his earlier, more rock, sometimes even punk approach - through the eyes of the matured songwriter he is now. Truth Be Sold rocks - in music and lyrics. Alt. Country World Punk Music is what Leeroy Stagger calls this mix of eleven convincing tracks - and hits the bull's eye again. Leeroy Stagger has been a member of the Blue Rose family for five years now, first as a member of the ESP trio whose wonderful, mellow album One For The Ditch was a hit in 2008. ESP (aka Easton Stagger Phillips) was a friendly collaboration, a bit of pure, unplanned magic from longtime Blue Rose artist Tim Easton, Whipsaws bandleader Evan Phillips from Alaska, and Leeroy Stagger who had already gained a reputation as a singer/songwriter with a rootsy country-rocking sound with four albums between 2004 and 2007. His Blue Rose debut Everything Is Real in 2009 marked another step forward in terms of professionalism and earned Stagger comparisons to genre greats like Steve Earle, Tom Petty, Paul Westerberg, John Mellencamp, Ryan Adams, Chris Knight or Son Volt's Jay Farrar. This of course didn't stop him from carving out his own CanAmericana/prairie rock niche with generous helpings of classic country rock, hooky guitar pop, heartland rock, alt. country, rough roadhouse rock and semi-acoustic songwriter-y folk rock with honest, hard-hitting lyrics which often deal with politics gone awry or social issues on a global or individual scale. Little Victories in 2010 was similarly structured with songs about life's little lies and everyday troubles but also about the charm of living in a prairie town. By then, Stagger had moved from the Westcoast metropolis of Vancouver to the Canadian hinterland of Lethbridge in the province of Alberta. In early 2012 it was time for Leeroy Stagger And His Band. The idea to Radiant Land came out of a two-month tour of the US in the summer of 2011 with drummer Nick Stecz, Stagger (guitars, vocals) and Evan Uschenko (guitar, bass, backing vocals). Under the auspices of experienced producer Robin Eaton the trio recorded what Stagger called his best material to date. For Truth Be Sold Stagger teamed up with another well-known producer: Steve Berlin of Los Lobos! For the wolves he is like an extra band member - he has also helmed sessions for Chuck Prophet, Dave Alvin, Tragically Hip, Katy Moffatt, Stephen Fearing, the Paladins, Buckwheat Zydeco, String Cheese Incident, Raul Malo, Michelle Shocked, Leftover Salmon, Fabulous Thunderbirds. Leeroy Stagger now joins these ranks. The two of them became fast friends and were on the same page as to how Truth Be Sold was supposed to sound: rough-hewn, direct and predominantly rock. The opener Memo makes the listener think that heavy metal might follow the song's opening licks. But (luckily) the Canadian's well-known voice comes on just then. The next song Goodnight Berlin brings more drum-bashing and guitar-cranking - it's a joy to hear. Celebrity is the first of a number of ballads, describing the pros & cons of celebrity worship. Cities On Fire is a typical Stagger message song built around a hypnotic, repeating, dry rocking riff. It's followed by a little relief for the listener's ears: Break My Heart is a pedal steel weeper (provided by Bryan Daste of Scotland Barr & The Slow Drags) that finds its way straight to the heart. The upbeat country rock of ESP delivers a fine No Depression atmosphere and talks about the aforementioned Easter Stagger Phillips project. The slow waltz of Sold Down The River is not the only song dealing with the monotony of life on the road - it's a fine example of how the trio of Stagger, Uschenko & Stecz has found its groove. In fact, Stagger has included both of them on every song's writing credits! After the country rock of Mister, Have A Heart gets rowdy with fuzz guitar and garage boogie before Jackie, a Whiskeytown-esque number, closes the album beautifully.
