I was touring with GoGetters and met Ellen Krantz by a coincident. I have had an idea of forming a band,to play a mix of Rockabilly with a Country & Western flavour. Dressed up like a bunch of Truckdrivers from Kentucky with "Daisy Duke" on vocal. With Ellen, it was "GO" from day one.Ellen is the expert on Countrymusic and I was stuck in the Rockabilly rhythm. We started writing songs right away,and ended up with the "On the contryside" album. A mix between Rockabilly and Country-twang, played with slapbass but NO Gretsch guitar ;) Not copying the sound of the 50's,more modern. But yet, a familliar Rockabilly aura is covering the band. During the writingprocess for the first album,just because we are so much influenced by real American folkmusic and Country & Western music, songs started to show up as more "Bluegrass" stylish kind of songs. After one of the most surprising comebacks in recent Psychobilly history back in 2007, all things MadDog Cole have been quite quiet for the last five-or-so years. Gossiped to be lost again beyond the Psychobilly horizon and rumoured straying from the path of rockin' (dis)grace, it's now safe to say that the former Krewmen lead singer just took his time to work on the material for his follow-up release and to recruit a line up that works best with him. Son Of Satan consists of twelve brand new tunes recorded at Western Star Studio, with Alan Wilson himself responsible for the perfect production and the final touches of the sound. The whole affair impresses with an ever-present straightforward Psychobilly feel on the full album, solid variations of the theme and healthy changes in speed with arguably one of the most remarkable voices of the genre always in the thick of the action. Saying all that this is rather the lost album of the McMillan/Cole era than a 21st century product of traditional Psychobilly tones, spiced up with a fat rhythm section that now also features Mark's former old band mate Dominic Parr back on drums, decent sharp and twangy guitaring by newly acquired Lee Gorrïnge, catchy melodies and a super tight sound all over the place. Songs like The Darkness, Son Of Satan, Better Off Dead, Did I Make You Scared and Captain Black cement that this Crazy Love release is not only an essential part in this year's Psychobilly panorama but a clear message to all them disbelievers that "you can be sure... that the mental MadDog's back!". If there's any band hailing from the rockin' underground of Germany that deserves so much more recognition than it gets, it has to be THE TONY MONTANAS. Regardless whether it was due to a lack of self-promotion, their general nonconformist attitude or band members literally locked away from the rest of the Psychobilly cosmos, in the past the Swabian three-piece always seemed to be unable to take the next step forward to rockin' notoriety. A lineup change a couple of years ago really did wonders for the the Mafiabilly experience and the reshuffled trio already left their mark on the Psychobilly Ratpack compilation with an exclamation point. Their second full-length album is a beast of a record anyway and if it doesn't turn the spotlight on these lads any brighter, I'll sort myself out and start listen to chart music. This package of mostly original material is a terrific mix of Rockabilly, Punk, ace musicianship and well-crafted songs with Italian harmonies and Tarantino type images of violence thrown into the mix that causes a very trademark sound that simply stuck in your head. To name but a few highlights I'd like to pick the amazing title theme that is an helluva intru-mental, the catchy sing-along Six Feet Below, the traditional Psycho rockin' theme that is Phantom Voices, live favourite Fick Dein Leben Crew, Judgement Day, Someone's Gonna Die Tonight, a song that sees the listener switching on a fake radio between the likes of The Nekromantix and Stray Cats before finally settling down with the song of THE TONY MONTANAS. A very strong cover version of Body Count's Cop Killer, Family and Bleed Me a Song are the best of the rest CD, Album
