Many, many things have happen. Their last sign of life was a split 7 inches with UNDERGANG released through DOOMENTIA back in 2012 and that was it. Rumours after rumours, fans eagerly waited and the recent announcement of a complete overhaul of their line-up worried some but as those four new tracks will prove it, FUNEBRARUM have lost none of their power. Actually, now featuring among others drummer Charlie Koryn from GHOULGOTHA and guitarist Sam Osborne who recently joined DEMONCY, it seems they are now in 2016 even more focus yet rawer and - yes, it is possible! - heavier than ever. Whereas their second full-length from 2009 The Sleep of Morbid Dreams' showcased a faster and more in-your-face approach, xhumation of the Ancient' sees them returning to the (very) putrid sounding and sludgier genre of their earlier recordings: more than ever, founding member and sole survivor of the precedent line-up Daryl Kahan's voice seems to echo from the deepest pits of Hell and with their now even more downtuned guitars, their music nearly matches ETERNAL DARKNESS and MOONDARK cult' oppressing approach. Here, they combine the ancient feeling of the early Finnish and Swedish sound and bathe in an acid bath of doom, rounded up by few creepy dark-ambient interludes that only adds to the overall feeling of claustrophobia. Enhanced by its fitting artwork courtesy of Necromantic Arts (Germany), recorded in only one day on December 6th 2015 to at Volume IV studio in New Brunswick New Jersey and mastered by Kahan himself (who also handled the deign of the whole thing) ahead of their forthcoming European tour with INTERMENT and PUTRISECT that will include a slot of the inaugural edition of the Netherlands Deathfest in Tilburg, 'Exhumation of the Ancient' is probably this year's most rotten and crushing death-metal release, by far. For a band with only one six songs demo (officially released later on tape format) under their belts, EXPANDER have already made waves far beyond their native Austin. Whereas NO CLEAN SINGING describes their music as "mixing metal heft and punk rhythms, scalding vocal acid and gritty yells". And the best part with those four misfits is that instead of the mix of attitude, grit and lo-fi musicianship one had to come to expect from this kind of crossover, the listener is immediately assaulted by a barrage of sound that is neither sloppy nor hastily put together. Their debut EP was recorded by no less than Kurt Ballou from the almighty CONVERGE in his studio in Boston in September 2015, graced with dystopian artwork courtesy of Raul Gonzalez who's worked with MORBUS CHRON and HORRENDOUS before. In those two songs, you can no only hear punk, thrash, D-beat and even hardcore but a four rabid dogs, ready to tear you from limb to limb with ferocious precision without loosing a drop of their raw energy. All (good) things must come to an end. DARKCREED never played by the rules in the first place - yet few could have predicted such an unusual career, if you could call it that. One might say that in the 20 years since they formed in Mexico City, they haven't achieved much but as their singer and spokesman Andrés Furukawa said himself: It's about quality, not quantity. Despite having only released two demos and one EP (ark Regions'), their legacy extends beyond such a meagre discography. After relocating to Sweden, Furukawa contributed lyrics to the song audanum Dreams' on TRIBULATION's, hildren of the Night' (2015). He also oversaw the making of the esurrected in Festering Slime' (2008) compilation that paved the way for the resurgence of real death metal in Scandinavia. Having never done things according to the norm (no live gigs, no promo pictures) it was as if the band lay dormant -and in a way, they did. In 2015 the inevitable decision to split up became official. Much like most of the other branches of the ever-growing tree of heavy metal, doom has become synonymous with almost anything, and everything in between: funeral doom, stoner doom, epic doom and what have you... But the good ol' doom/death often seems to be cast aside, as if this cruder and creepier abomination was better left in the shadows. Then again, all the better, as that is indeed where this kind of purposefully unrefined sonic sorcery strives best. While the Solothus guys have strong ties to death metal - with vocalist Kari now also growling for Sepulchral Curse, while Tami hammers his bass in the ranks of Gorephilia as well - and this is evident in their sound, it's the passion for doom metal where the band's origins lie. The dark epic majesty of masters like Candlemass, combined with the most crushing death metal dread á la Asphyx and Cianide, was what inspired Kari and guitarist Veli to cast the first Solothusian spells in the small Southwestern town of Parainen in 2007. After going through a few line-up changes and relocating to the bigger cities of Turku and Helsinki, Solothus launched their debut full-length "Summoned from the Void" on Spain's esteemed Memento Mori imprint in 2013. While the album already proved them to be a force to be reckoned with, its successor "No King Reigns Eternal" digs the hole way deeper, expanding it to a devouring abyss of desolation. There's no light waiting at the bottom for these six songs, monstrous musical monuments ranging from 6 to nearly 11 minutes in length. Conjuring for instance Hooded Menace at its bleakest, and as suggested by the stunning cover artwork courtesy of Juanjo Castellano, this second coming focuses on excruciatingly crushing all possible hope in the heaviest way possible. Italian doom has often been synonymous with cryptic lyrics, occult atmospheres and a somehow peculiar music that takes inspiration as much from its metal elders than from the progressive scene. And while BLACK OATH showcase all those elements, they've nevertheless always stood head and shoulders above the rest. Put together by guitarist, occasional bass player and vocalist A.th in 2006, they've always sounded like no-one else with their high sensibility and somehow more refined sound, even with lyrics could frighten even the most seasoned black-metal fans. Even after 'Ov Qliphoth and Darkness' released through Sweden's I HATE RECORDS in 2013 that met only unanimous praise, their third proper full-length 'To Below and Beyond' still takes things even further. Their first recording with new guitarist BR is both epic and carefully crafted in sound while A.th soothing vocals and delicate arrangements still retain that dark and menacing touch, like an iron fist in a velvet glove. A fifty minutes long loose concept about alchemy, mysticism and the fall of Man, this an album with a class in its own, the rare capacity to take the listeners on a journey to the other side. If it was to be a movie, it would be a 70's Dario Argento about the lost treasure of the Templar that ends in a grandiloquent bloodbath as the Great Horned One takes over. Released through three different labels - one for each format, DOOMENTIA taking care of the CD version - 'To Below and Beyond' is not only the band's best work but also its most ambitious and is deemed to become one of this year doom's highlight. And indeed, both their epic debut full-length ('Become the Sun') and split with like-minded space rockers WO FAT ("'Cyclopean Riffs') proved that they hadn't lost their freakin' touch. Now, following a massive songwriting period that will give birth to not one but two albums in 2016, its first spawn titled 'Endless Flight' will once again establish EGYPT as the kings of the fuzz. The instantly recognizable and warm guitar tone, the hypnotic groove of bassist and singer Aaron Esterby manages to summon in conspiracy with drummer Chad Heille and the way the riffs circle the wagons so to speak before launching their lethal attack, all wrapped up with a good taste for the epic. It's all here, all those elements that still make in 2016 EGYPT stand out in the middle of the otherwise quite stale stoner/doom scene. When speaking about 'Black Soil', Lurkerspath.com draws a parallel in between what ALUK TODOLO are to black-metal and what HORSE LATITUDES are to doom, like a strange entity that cannot be tamed. And they've got a point. First off, those weirdos have ever been what you can call your typical doom band in the first place. And their extensive use of not one but TWO bass players and lack of guitar is just a part of the riddle... See, those three Finns have always been first and foremost about repetition. And there's always been something very ritualistic about their music, as if it was their way of entering the next world. This being said, 'MCD' might not be the most appropriate term as the whole thing clocks at nearly 50 minutes, with the song "Eternal Spring" swallowing the whole B side. And whereas on the flipside both "Black Soil" and "Forest" present a quite versatile face full of analog synths, death growls and vibrant drumming, this final epic of 17 + minutes take their already legendary sense of minimalism to new heights. If at some point the song seems to come to a halt, it finishes off on an almost hysterical and black-metal like note, encompassing how truly out-of-this-world HORSE LATITUDES are. It's not the first time that DOOMENTIA has been digging the old archives to exhume a long forgotten recording from the golden era of the extreme metal scene, a recent example being the sole two songs recorded by the ephemeral Swedish death masters EGYPT reissued on a glorious 7". Hell, some labels these days seem to live only to restore those ancient pieces of music from obscurity... Still, from time to time, one specific band or demo still knock you in the head by its sheer aggression or energy after all those years. MISCARIAGE is one those bands. On paper, those Germans death merchants had a relatively short lifespan: they lurked for approximately two years in the darkest corridors of the Stuttgart area metal scene and recorded only one proper demo (if you count their live demo tape from '95) before kicking their singer out and switching both name (they then opted for MATRICIDE) and style. Only to fade into oblivion few months later, with only their former bass player Jan Rademaker maintaining later on a somehow profile in the scene with BLIZZARD and RADEMASSAKER... Still, over twenty two years after its initial recording, 'Peace? Justice? Murder!' remains a fine piece of thrash/death history at a time when both sub-genres had been deemed as 'outdated'. Leaning closer in spirit to early INVOCATOR and PESTILENCE or even fellow countrymen DARK MILLENNIUM than to the classic sound of the 80's, they were quite sharp for such a young outfit and had a good sense of melody and even ideas that could be labelled as 'progressive', even if the shouting vocals of Sven Elvers still remains an acquired taste. With its five quite lengthy tracks and unusual take on this classic sound, MISCARIAGE was your typical 'make or break' type of band and even if, indeed, they didn't last very long, this sole twenty-five minutes long recording of theirs is a vibrant snippet of what they could have been...
