The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers were formed in January 2008 when the musician brothers Luther & Cody Dickinson joined blues greats Charlie Musselwhite, Alvin Youngblood Hart and the late Memphis pianist for a guitar jam with former Squirrel Nut Zippers leader Jimbo Mathus. Producer and music stylist Jim Dickinson gathered for a self-described "hardcore blues" recording under the group name New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers. For more than 12 years the existence of this recording was only darkly mentioned in interviews and was called a great old school recording by these few witnesses. It was made over a few late nights in a take off from the floor, where they all sat in a large circle in the studio and played quietly between the microphones, alternating between singing in the room and improvising on location.
