About Thomas Köner: Thomas Köner (b. 1965) is a pioneering multimedia artist whose main interest lies in combining visual and auditory experiences. Over his long, much celebrated career, he has worked between installation works, sound art, minimal soundscapes, and as one half of Porter Ricks. He attended music college in Dortmund and studied electronic music at the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. Until 1994 he worked in the film industry as editor and sound engineer. Thomas has extended his concept of time and sound colour to images, resulting in video installations, photography and net art. His point of departure was composition of sound in which aspects of a performance and visual language were gradually integrated. At first in the collaboration with film artist Jürgen Reble and the live performance Alchemie (1992). Following this, he started to compose film soundtracks and music to accompany historic silent films for the Louvre Museum and the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, who called him a major innovator in the contemporary music scene, as well as noted his collaborative practice which has led to his working with musicians, filmmakers and visual artists on installations and sound performances, and to his creation of six video works produced in two cycles, starting in 2003. Jookabox, the name of Indianapolis native David ""Moose"" Adamson's musical project, sounds like a child slurring the words ""Grandpa Jukebox,"" implying filial connection with an archaic musical object. Either that or the intoxicated pronunciation of a strange blues artist's nom de plume. When David was in grade school, his uncle took note of his developing interest in hip-hop and loaned him a four-track. They mixed tracks together and the young Adamson would write rhymes to sing over them, including a double-boombox sequel to Fu-Schnicken's ""What's Up Doc (Can We Rock?)"" called ""Sufferin' Succotash (I Got Whiplash)"" At first the beats came from instrumental sides of cassette singles, then from presets on his uncle's drum machine, and finally from his very own beat machine (a Christmas gift), the Yamaha DD-9. But that was a long time ago. Since then, through various incarnations and collaborations with groups such as Archer Avenue and BIGBIGcar, Adamson's musical interests and excursions have crystallized into a startlingly singular and eclectic songwriting strategy. Jookabox's debut record, Scientific Cricket, samples a kind of primordial blues sound, children's sidewalk-chalk rhymes and Appalachian folk. But his latest effort finds him moving into new, unplumbed territories. Ropechain pinwheels kaleidoscopically through old-time spirituals, punk, chain-gang hymnal, deep house, and club music hip-hop, blending these disparate elements into a cohesive and unique synthesis. A man of indeterminate age stands behind a stack of drums and keyboards, all arrayed within his reach. A guitar hangs down from his neck, occasionally played his hands aren’t split between the keys, tapping out riffs on synth. His feet work a couple of pedals beating out time on snare and floor tom. A drumstick is deployed on the guitar and the keys only. Makes sense. Like a schizoid game of ‘Pong’, the whole thing is about exploiting the tempo, and the sounds - these ano / digital shards, iced with minimal / savant lyric shreds and a crazed slavery to the groove(s), could be hailing from Munich in ’77 or Cleveland, SF, LA, NYC or London in the late 70s. It could be the soundtrack to Peter Ivers’s ‘New Wave Theatre’ or some weird dark corners of the early 80s once the records began to make their way into the world. These tracks are the sound of Trin Tran. ‘Dark Radar” was recorded in 2002 and 2003, made up into a couple of different CD-Rs and then burned and given away. Finding Trin Tran himself and getting all these tracks gathered together took a little bit of time.
