Technical demands aside, intellectual depth aside, the best Death Metal is still the one that just bangs into your face. And what the very early Death, Massacre, Repulsion, Master and consorts were for the US scene, namely the initial spark of a whole wave of death music, is Carnage for Sweden. Personal cross-references lead to Carbonized, Entombed, Carcass, Arch Enemy, but especially Dismember. And with them there is also the biggest stylistic overlap. Some pieces are even very old Dismember ideas due to the typical Swedish inbreeding. Unfortunately, the bunch only caught up with one single album, which was released in 1990. Dark Recollections caused quite a stir in the underground. Entombed and also Dismember were commercially ahead with their debuts, because Carnage had already disbanded at the time of the release after guitarist Michael Amott was poached by Carcass. But that doesn't diminish the importance or the pleasure of Dark Recollections, especially since the re-release has the two infernal demos of the band and several rough mixes on board. Check them out, the root of all evil. --Jan Jaedike Amazon.com With only two demos and one album, Carnage managed to fascinate whole armies of death metal disciples at that time, who even today, at the mere mention of the band name, fall reverently to their knees. Stylistically the band can be compared to Dismember, which is hardly surprising, since 3/5 of the line-up continued their career with Dismember later on. Dark Recollections was first released in 1990 as a split CD with the Norwegians of Cadaver, but in the last years it developed more and more to a sought-after rarity, so that this re-release makes sense. Especially since the regular longplayer was enriched by no less than eight bonus tracks, which cover the whole musical work of the Swedes in their demo phase. Furthermore the booklet was enhanced by liner notes, various old band photos, flyers and reproductions of the two demo covers. A Death Metal collection without Dark Recollections is definitely incomplete, so go for it now! --Frank Stove

The planets have aligned, and space itself has opened up to grace us with the heavy roll of Black Elephant's Seven Swords. The Italian fuzzmongers mark 10 years of cooperative corporeal existence in 2020 and last checked in from their native Savona in Summer 2018 with the aptly-titled Cosmic Blues, and two years and an entire lifetime later they're back with another collection of classic-minded heavy groovers, picking the best the '70s, '90s and '10s had to offer in riffery and melding spacey blowouts with desert-hued hooks. Seven Swords is the second LP Black Elephant have issued in league with Detroit-based imprint Small Stone Records, and whether it's the scorching leads of "Yayoi Kusama" or the conscious wink-and-nod of "Red Sun and Blues Sun" a short time later -- just ahead of the bluesy "Seppuku" and the near-nine-minute stretch of closer "Govinda" -- the four-piece bring their finest work to-date in an efficient seven-track/33-minute stretch, building not only on what they accomplished on Cosmic Blues, but also what their prior two full-lengths, 2014ís Bifolchi Inside and 2012ís Spaghetti Cowboys, were building toward. This is a band coming into their own, wasting neither their time or yours in the process. Fuzz pedals preach on, the sky cracks, and the riffs themselves seem to lock bellies in sumo battles, so what the hell? The world's ending anyway. You might as well have some fun with it.

ANTHRAX TO CELEBRATE THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF PERSISTENCE OF TIME WITH DELUXE CD EDITION! Fully Re-Mastered with Refashioned Cover Art. Available exclusively on disc and vinyl, the CD package will include two CDs and one DVD, the vinyl edition offers four LPs, as well as revised cover art that reflects what had been the album’s original visual concept. The 40-minute “guerilla-style” DVD was shot when Anthrax was on tour with Iron Maiden in 1991 and features live footage of Benante taking over the drums for Iron Maiden’s Nick McBrain, as well as backstage and dressing room footage with members of both bands. The piece wraps with Benante, Bello, and Ian joining Iron Maiden on stage for the final song of the night, “Sanctuary.” Like Anthrax’s other recent deluxe editions, drummer Charlie Benante spearheaded the new Persistence of Time release. In addition to remastered versions of the original tracklist, the deluxe version features a B-side version of “I’m the Man”, which leans more hip-hop than the album track, a live version of “Time”, and an early demo of “Got the Time”, among other rarities. The deluxe edition also features new cover artwork, which actually had been the original visual concept for the album. “I was at the height of my Salvador Dali phase, I was just absorbed in his art, and I wanted to tie the two together — Salvador Dali and time,” explained Ian in a press release. “I loved what [artist] Don Brautigam did with the original cover, but for this deluxe edition, I wanted it the way I had originally seen the cover in my head. Persistence of Time also marked singer Joey Belladonna’s last album with the band until his return for 2011’s Worship Music. The vocalist recalled recording the album at Electric Ladyland Studios in New York City, saying, “That place has such an aura, recording in the same place where Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin did, it was a really cool experience.”
