SINISTHRA comes from Finland and has been in various stages of existence since around 1999. Their brand of music is basically metal, drawing from a wide source of different influences and blending them to a sound that can't really be compared to any one single band. Always quite melancholic, most of the time quite heavy, and often with strong shades of 70’s prog with lesser shades of 90’s grunge. The band released the debut album on 2005, called “Last Of The Stories Of Long Past Glories” to favourable reviews and got labelled “gothic metal”, somewhat misleadingly. As the singer Tomi Joutsen joined Amorphis, his career skyrocketed and Sinisthra’s didn’t, so due to lack of time from his part, things slowed down. After the successful release of the new ‘The Long And Beaten Way’, Sinisthra and Rockshots Records decided to re-release a new version of the cult debut album. The reissue version includes 4 bonus tracks: two demo versions (‘Ice Cube Sun’ and ‘Unrevelealed’) plus two unreleased songs (‘Not For You’ and ‘To Have and To Hold’)

Eternal's Kelsonic Studios in Australia. The writing sessions for the self-titled were largely helmed by Miranda and Davis, with Miranda providing the riffs and Davis cementing the arrangements. While all three songs from Through Divine Rite made the jump to the self-titled album ("Trampled into the Earth," "Through Divine Rite" and "Flametongue"), the remainder of the songs were created through trial-and-error. Davis, admittedly, is a stickler for arrangements and will often create multiple versions of the same song, while Pinion added her flavor by supplying song ideas and vocal lines written on the piano. This unorthodox way of writing paid off in the end: Stygian Crown emerged with a batch of songs that each bears their own identity but are unmistakably crushing and epic. Pinion shouldered the lyric writing load, detailing myths from different cultures, namely "Devour the Dead," which is about the Egyptian goddess Ammit, while "Two Coins for the Ferryman" recalls Charon, the boatman who took the dead across the river Styx. Her vocals - one of the defining traits of Stygian Crown - work majestically between the band's boulder-sized riffs and powerful bottom-end, resonating on album opener "Up from the Depths" and "When Old Gods Die." A sterling, heaving album capable of moving heaven and earth, Stygian Crown's self-titled debut is a masterclass in songwriting and unbridled heaviness. Doomination awaits! Incarnate, a collection of various sessions spanning years and lineups, serves as testament to the band's great essential constants. The trademarks in question are tough but easy-going stoner grooves, Wino's detuned death machine of a guitar, and an absolute heaviness that permeates their work like a weird mixture of sweat and incense. The band, in whatever embodiment, create this heaviness by always working as a unit. Hard rock excesses are avoided; every drum fill and every note of every solo works toward the song rather than individual glory. Make no mistake though, Wino's solos, while tactful, are still heroic -- he offers unique schizo-bluesy runs throughout Incarnate, of particular depth and feeling on the "Streetside/Mourning" sessions from spring '93. Any lyrics that come through the mix hold interest as well, an intelligent individualist stance firmly taken. A very telling Obsessed moment occurs when Wino howls "It makes my blood run cold to be bought and sold" on "Concrete Cancer," over a re-working of the riff from "Iron Man." Eric Burdon and Lynyrd Skynyrd covers are thrown in for good measure, with Melvins drummer Dale Crover beating skins on the latter. Scott Reeder, who went on to join Kyuss, plays bass on a session as well. The Obsessed have never received the recognition accorded those two groups but any fans of Lysol or Welcome to Sky Valley are advised to pick up Incarnate as a further lesson in drop 'D.' - allmusic.com

The swedish band JACKWAVE was active only in a short three year period beginning in 1985. A changing of bandmembers ended the career from these young hopefuls fast. Two bands playing a similar Heavy Metal style are much more well known today: IRONCROSS from Finland and.... HEAVY LOAD...the domestic competitors. The songwriting was on the same high level and even the vocals were powerful and high class! But JACKWAVE made only two 7inchs and two demo tapes spreading over the world only in self distribution. By living not in a big town, but Boxholm, which probably nobody outside of Sweden knows, it was defnitely impossible to reach a useful number of Metal fans without a strong label in the background. So today the band JACKWAVE is only known to a few specialists. With the reedition of all the material the band made during their time of existing, this will hopefully change a bit.

Lucrecia Dalt is a Colombian recording artist, songwriter, and producer. After studying civil engineering in Colombia, Dalt worked at a geo-technical company for two years and has since lived in Barcelona and Berlin, where she currently resides. She has released six solo albums and has collaborated with musicians Aaron Dilloway, Jan Jelinek, and Gudrun Gut, to name a few. No era sólida is Dalt's seventh solo record, and her second on RVNG Intl., following the release of 2018's Anticlines. No era sólida is an introspective venture into visceral sonic terrain, as Dalt sets out to capture the moment when one becomes pure sound. The album observes a transition in Dalt herself through the emergence of an alternate ego / state of self named Lia. Each song identifies a different state experienced by Lia, opening with Disuelta (`dissolved') and transforming through pieces such as Seca (`to be dry'), Ser boca (`to be mouth'), Espesa (`thick'). Lia's poetic reflections on the panspermia echo her origins, having come from some other ether. As a lifeform seeded through sound, the very essence of Lia is embodied in the exploratory instincts of her creator Lucrecia Dalt, an artist whose innate sonar system traces the far reaches of musical experimentation.

Technical demands aside, intellectual depth aside, the best Death Metal is still the one that just bangs into your face. And what the very early Death, Massacre, Repulsion, Master and consorts were for the US scene, namely the initial spark of a whole wave of death music, is Carnage for Sweden. Personal cross-references lead to Carbonized, Entombed, Carcass, Arch Enemy, but especially Dismember. And with them there is also the biggest stylistic overlap. Some pieces are even very old Dismember ideas due to the typical Swedish inbreeding. Unfortunately, the bunch only caught up with one single album, which was released in 1990. Dark Recollections caused quite a stir in the underground. Entombed and also Dismember were commercially ahead with their debuts, because Carnage had already disbanded at the time of the release after guitarist Michael Amott was poached by Carcass. But that doesn't diminish the importance or the pleasure of Dark Recollections, especially since the re-release has the two infernal demos of the band and several rough mixes on board. Check them out, the root of all evil. --Jan Jaedike Amazon.com With only two demos and one album, Carnage managed to fascinate whole armies of death metal disciples at that time, who even today, at the mere mention of the band name, fall reverently to their knees. Stylistically the band can be compared to Dismember, which is hardly surprising, since 3/5 of the line-up continued their career with Dismember later on. Dark Recollections was first released in 1990 as a split CD with the Norwegians of Cadaver, but in the last years it developed more and more to a sought-after rarity, so that this re-release makes sense. Especially since the regular longplayer was enriched by no less than eight bonus tracks, which cover the whole musical work of the Swedes in their demo phase. Furthermore the booklet was enhanced by liner notes, various old band photos, flyers and reproductions of the two demo covers. A Death Metal collection without Dark Recollections is definitely incomplete, so go for it now! --Frank Stove
