Working on this album helped me in the process. I was searching for connections: with myself, with others and with something bigger than all of us. Soon I realised that writing an album in solitude – like I usually work – started to feel hypocritical, and that playing shows at venues with great PA systems and the perfect sound and lights couldn’t feel more different from how I normally write my music. So, I started playing in people’s living rooms. You come in all by yourself… not knowing anybody. And you start talking. About how it feels like we’re losing each other. About how I’d like to believe that the disconnect and the harshness that we feel in today’s world can be overcome thru warmth and closeness between people and more closeness with yourself. In-between songs people started sharing their stories, with me and with each other. Many stories were told in these living rooms, stories that all helped shape my album. And I asked myself the same questions during recordings: how direct are we willing to communicate anymore? We’re all showing off our best life moments on Facebook but how much talking do we still do, really? And what information is still real? And how do we rediscover directness and genuine connections? Working with Phill Brown as a producer was a very mindful decision. Apart from his timeless brilliance, Phill still hails from the era of tape machines and thus ‘first takes’. Nowadays most recordings are perfected per every 10 seconds. Auto-tune, plugins and copy-paste have become the norm. But unless it’s being done out of a conscious functional choice, it doesn’t feel much different to me than all the fake news that we get bombarded with and it also gets in the way of the connectedness and direct communication that we all seem to crave. On this album, I wanted to hear my voice the way that it sounds in my head. Whenever we used effects it’s because we felt that they had a place there, a story to contribute to, not as an unconscious automatic next step. I wanted to hear on this record that I’m not all soft but that I have a raw side to me as well. It’s a side that I call on and question and that I need to learn to accept. I’ve noticed that by being more accepting of myself, I become less judgmental when it comes to other people. We’re only people. And I would very much like for us to see each other like that again. Just see each other, period. (Victor Hugo) Okay, this quote is meant to lead you astray. Or not. Why? The title of OBELYSKKHs new effort in heaviness might remind you of H.P.Lovecrafts iconic poem and you're not wrong. There's the inspiration for lyrical content and the artwork. But that's only one dimension. The other is illustrated almost perfectly by our French revolutionist - the history of creation for the album holding in your hands. After having delivered Hymn To Pan as their tird album not even one year after its predecessor White Lightnin' Franconian Doomsters OBELYSKKH found themselves in an emotional turmoil involving different private focusses and even a line up change with bass player Dirty Dave leaving and being replaced by Seb Duster who now has quite some parts in the songwriting process. All these ups and downs alongside the quite massive honesty and emotionality in OBELYSKKHs routines lead to a monstrous pressure which is now sonically channeled into the new album. And you can hear it: The Providence lives by pressure, groove and darkness - the album sees OBELYSKKH leaving huge parts of their former approach behind. Less Psychedelic, more groove. No Stoner Rock but Doom par excellence - all shaped into a crushing maelstrom of utter heaviness. The album starts with a groove-laden concrete ball rolling down your spine and when the clear, clean and dark vocals set in the direction is revealed: ritualistic, rough and punk'd out - after the first notes might remind you of the mighty OM it keeps going in a new, yet welcome direction - an OBELYSKKH leading the way. Of course, parts are still there - the bridging leads sit enthroned on swarm-like riffage, vocals meander between cutting serenity and harsh shrieks, giving the music enough time to breathe and adding an unusual element - a battle call against mediocrity, loud, aggressive and in roaring manner, but rooted in a fearless presentation of something precise, something conceived. Under the title Songs from the Humdrum the artist Tokenboy presents his first solo album with exclusively his own songs and compositions. The songs, 12 in number and consistently quiet to thoughtful, were all recorded at Northroad Recording Studios and now appear under the label of Triumphton Records. The music we get on the album is probably best described as guitar-oriented Singer-Songwriter-Pop, although some songs do not fit into this drawer. Thus, they are darker by a few nuances, and, we say, more mystical than this concept suggests. The CD cover shows a boy who can push clouds, the desire to find something of the imagination and the happiness, which was as a child to us, but in the harsh transmission of the everyday life are ever lost. Each song stands for itself and tells a little story, which however basically always revolves around the same theme: Longing, love, happiness and relationships that threaten to get used to in the daily routine.
