Just take a song like Maya. It starts with a deep and declamatory voice, which almost reminds a sort of Ian Curtis' american melody stretched out on a carpet of obsessive drum and bass that seems to be coming from Rio de Janeiro more than from Chicago, topped by a slippery guitar that makes you think punk also bloomed in Caribbean lands. Suddenly melody changes and a skinny rock stone takes its place. It is made of solid and blank parts and the melody gives way to scratching frames, the guitar and drums chase as guttural bellowing of elephants who rest only at the end, where tribal rhythm collapses and yealds to a skeletal melancholy blues. Maya is just one of the 9 tracks featured on Tastyville, the new Three Second Kiss album after 4 years from the previous Long Distance (2008 African Tape), but it is the metaphor-song of a work born from the belly most than the brain. Each piece meets only the cinematic structure of the skin, changing course and direction without premeditation of style that is not the free guide of instinct. Tastyville shows a new strength of the Italian band, its desire to open up and let luxuriantly explode a sound - the rough and minimal sound created by the guitar, bass, drums triangle - in a brand new and free fluorescence that maintains the attitude of punk without its but visionary sound anymore. May be that's why Tastyville is an experience that embodies several emotional states rather than showing us only one philological style. No labels to spend 'cause everything is mixed, blended and digested. After many years of activities so many things have been told about Three Second Kiss. Musician, animator, and filmmaker Alexis Gideon combines all these interests in his stop-motion animated video operas. Floating Oceans, the third, explores and celebrates Irish literature and mythology, as reexamined through contemporary styles such as hip-hop and psychedelia. Based on the works of Lord Dunsany, an early 20th-century Irish fantasy writer, the piece is also inspired by the experiments of John William Dunne, an Irish engineer interested in dreams and parapsychology. And all this plays out through the form of a bourgeois dinner party. The live music mirrors the video’s action exactly, and the animated characters' mouths are perfectly in sync with the sung lyrics. this is the original score on vinyl! Hazel-Rah began as Tim Byrnes' inspiration to rise up to a personal challenge to compose a set of music that would compliment Toby Driver's Tartar Lamb on a mid-winter tour of the United States that straddled 2006 and 2007. That famous tour ended tragicomically with the van breaking down on the way home in Tomah, Wisconsin. This initial Hazel-Rah line-up featured Byrnes on vocals and synth, Driver on guitar, and Friendly Bears' Andrew Greenwald on drums. They played a set of three songs. As a band, Hazel-Rah laid low for the next five years, as Tim was caught up into other musical responsibilities, including Anthony Braxton's trumpet ensemble, Ron Anderson's PAK, and Toby Driver's Kayo Dot among other things. There were, however, some highlights from that time, including a southern U.S. tour with Forbes Graham (on drum machine) in summer '07, a really short tour of New England and Philly with Forbes and Stern in summer '08, opening slots on the PAK/Stig Noise Sound System tour of France in fall '08, a house show in Seattle during the Kayo Dot Coyote sessions in summer 9, and a big show at John Zorn's music space The Stone in February '10, which featured an excellent lineup of David Andrew Moore on drums, Adam Minkoff on guitar, and Extra Life's Charlie Looker on baritone guitar (with Driver making a special guest appearance mid-set). Hazel-Rah's first five-year season culminated with a recording session at Colin Martson's Menegroth the Thousand Caves, which yielded "Behold, A Firewall" and "Stars". These would constitute Hazel-Rah's first official release, The Africantape 10' on Africantape Records (February 6 2012). Prior to these songs, the recorded output had been sparse but pointed, consisting of lo-fi recordings that included several art-songs, a remix/reinvention of Candiria's "Pull", and a French horn/baritone guitar duet played by Byrnes and Looker called "Glacier". The Africantape EP "Behold, A Firewall" and "Stars" are indeed the preeminent full-ensemble compositions from Hazel-Rah's first 5 years, captured skillfully onto tape by Colin Marston (Dysrhythmia, Krallice) and masterfully executed in performance by Tim Byrnes, Adam Minkoff, David Andrew Moore, and Charlie Looker (Extra Life). I am a bit puzzled as to how to describe this album. It would be too simple a realisation to believe that girls can just sing about their being there and get away with that, as if the atmosphere and thiry being themselves is considered as being enough to represent themselves and the songs, in the case of Shelley Short this implication and awareness seems to have become something more deeply serious : her songs are also into that stream of being, listening carefully, caring, and enjoying the atmosphere. She has not only a convincing voice, she has that capability of creating attractive melodies, that never sounds obvious despite a way of keeping it simple. The listener still has the impression being carried from one moment to the next while there is constant change and an awareness of the moment more than being carried away by obvious rhythms of life and music.
