In the course of his sadly short life, Tommy Bolin was at least granted eight productive years during which he was able to contribute to what was probably the most innovative era of rock’n’roll. His outstanding skill on the guitar brought him legendary status during his lifetime when he replaced the - in many ways - unique Ritchie Blackmore as frontman with Deep Purple. Jon Lord, keyboarder with the group, once described Bolin as a »beautiful lost soul«, and as such he allows one a very private glimpse into his musical perspective in his second and final album. This is certainly dualistic: in numbers such as "Post Toastee" and "Shake The Devil" Bolin sings about drug problems in a dry rocker style that is enhanced by his superb guitar playing. But this hard rocker shows just how stylistically assured he is in more gentle realms, as in the highly melodic ballad "Sweet Burgundy", which makes for enjoyable listening. Bolin’s subtle fingering creates a natural and electrifying "Gypsy Soul" and his "Hello, Again" is narrated softly to the sound of old-fashioned strings and winds. The relaxed tone of the recording is quite typical of the notions of sound at that time and reminds one yet again that the great voices of rock are now heard in heaven. Audiophile 180g gram vinyl. In the 1970s, Herbie Hancock’s "Crossings" was to be found on every record shelf in the student pads of jazz-fusion fans. The cover, with its psychedelic touch, also contributed significantly to its popularity – although it was unclear where the crossing was going to take us … Nevertheless, the excellent trumpeter Eddie Henderson – often underestimated as an improviser and composer, and Benny Maupin – who like Hancock had grown up under Miles Davis’s wing, present a wide range of sound-generating instruments – as was all the rage in those days. Synthesizer and Mellotron (a polyphonic tape replay keyboard and as such practically the prototype of the sampler) were permanent members of the group – and even produce here melodic arches of sound! Whether Bennie Maupin’s "Quasar" launches the group and us into extraterrestrial territory (as stated in one review) is a moot point. This LP is a contemporary historical document, though it certainly doesn’t sound antiquated. That’s why younger listeners too will find pleasure in this experiment from the previous millennium. This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. Audiophile 180g gram vinyl. To define in a nutshell the music of Harry Nilsson in accordance with his personality can easily become a fiasco. The American singer-songwriter might well share his reputation as a multi-talented eccentric with a number of other musicians. However, his highly unusual style and his »satirical catchy pop songs [composed] with the sparkling eye of a cynic and the tearful eye of a nostalgic« (rororo Rock Lexicon) cannot be pigeonholed. Nilsson packaged derisive lines, spiced with a pinch of self-irony, in suspiciously pleasing yet carefully selected tunes. His cultivated and astonishingly supple voice basked to the full in bittersweet phrases, aided by elaborate, melting, slushy arrangements with strings and winds. Several of the wonderfully fresh numbers from "Aerial Ballet" reached top places in the charts. "Everybody’s Talkin’" became world-famous through its use in the film "Asphalt Cowboy" and brought Nilsson his first Grammy award. The song "One" soared to the top ten of the charts. The other light and airy songs now invite you to create your very own hit list. Every single number makes great listening! Ray Barretto disliked his music being labelled 'Latin Jazz' - yet the album "La Cuna" is one of the most memorable of this genre, since it amalgamates the diverse moods of both Americas. In this album, the expertise of the legendary producer Creed Taylor is combined with an all-star ensemble and the supreme musicality of the skilful jazz percussionist Barretto to create a tightly-knit performance. The title-giving opening number sails along merrily with a salsa swing, but then the soaring flute melodies and the powerful piano improvisations cool down the Caribbean rhythms. How the players mingle driving patterns with delicate melodies to form beautiful song is demonstrated best in "Doloroso" and also in "Mambotango", whereby the latter exudes controlled coolness in the somewhat electric mood. John Tropea leans seemingly intentionally towards Santana and his art of guitar-playing, and this is further enhanced by the late Joe Farrell's phenomenal performance. A further tribute is paid to one of the greatest musicians ever to combine various styles and trends with a speeded-up version of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise". To conclude: if not Latin Jazz, then definitely Latin AND Jazz. This Speakers Corner production was manufactured 100% analogously, with the use of the analogue mastertape and analogue mastering. When this double album appeared on the shelves in the jazz section in the 1970s, the 'Monk' had all but disappeared from the scene. Concerts? Far from it! Something new from the studio? No way! All attempts by various managers, festival organisers and club owners to entice Monk away from the tv set in his living room to perform old or new works on the world’s stages fell on deaf ears. The 1963 tour with appearances in Japan and the resulting album offered the same old works, but the solidly played favourites such as "Just A Gigolo" or "I’m Gettin’ Sentimental Over You" made the audience and record collectors alike sit up and listen. And weren’t "Blue Monk", "Epistrophy" and "Bemsha Swing" old favourites too - often played and often heard? Happy memories, then, for those Japanese fans who were in Tokyo’s Sankei Hall on 21 May 1963! And happy listeners in 2016 too, when they add this LP to their collection.
