This is Calvin Love: He started a punk band in the northern Canadiancity of Edmonton at the age of thirteen. The oppressively long, dark,and cold winters kept him indoors making madcap music whilesummer nights found him tearing up the sleepy streets with rock 'n' roll fueled adrenaline. The stripped down experimental psych of HELVETIA plays out like a series of snapshots: subtle, hazy and gritty as hell. Albertini's laissez faire approach to personnel has resulted in a diverse catalog of material, ranging from 4-track lo-fi indie to bat-shit crazy soundscapes. Following on from her much-lauded debut album "Quarantine" on Hyperdub released earlier in the year, Laurel Halo concludes both the year and the drama explored in "Quarantine" with this new single "Sunlight On The Faded". Where "Quarantine" was dense and beatless, layered and visceral with vocals cutting through intense soundscapes, "Sunlight On The Faded" is energized and geometric, with lush chords built around hard, sparse drums and Laurel's harmonized vocals. The claustrophobic motifs explored on "Quarantine" remain, but here they are turned inside out, incandescent and fleeting. Choked samples and illusory FX support the vocal phrases, the lyrics hinting at a resolution from the pain of the album's themes, and a hopefulness too. The b-side dub is a deep exploration, again reflecting the soundscapes of "Quarantine" but ramping up the intensity with simultaneously tense and lithe drum patterns. The chords of the original are broken by gaseous blooms, distortion detail work and rhythmic FX, allowing them to breathe and bounce in and out of the track, pivoting around a sinister, bassy dub techno pulse. Like the original take, the dub version is equal parts dark and positive, both ideal for late nights and early mornings.

The first ever live album from legendary instrumental juggernaut Don Caballero! "Gang Banged With A Headache, And Live" is a recently-unsurfaced "authorized bootleg" from the math rock founders. With material spanning from 1993's "For Respect" (Touch & Go) to songs that would end up on 2006's "World Class Listening Problem" (Relapse Records), "Gang Banged..." includes a decade's worth of quintessential Don Cab material. Some background for the uninitiated: Don Caballero emerged in the early 90s with their other-worldly and completely groundbreaking style. Re-inventing song structure from the ground up, Don Cab cultivated what would eventually become known as "math rock". While the general public was first cutting their teeth on Nirvana, Don Cab was 10 steps ahead of us, pioneering their elaborately-rhythmic, loop-centric sound that would pave the way for a host of future bands. Much like the band, "Gang Banged With A Headache, And Live" is shrouded in mystery. Not much is known about the origins of the recording, but what we do know is (1) it was probably recorded in Chicago, (2) it was probably recorded in 2003, (3) it fecking rules.

After a 2011 that saw him release EPs on Local Action and Keysound, his debut album §nity', and provide official remixes for Mike Skinner and Rob Harvey's "The D.O.T." and labels Tri Angle, Weird World and Hippos In Tanks, Manchester producer Damu has spent the majority of 2012 regrouping. Of course, that's not to say Damu's been dormant: he's remixed Spector, Becoming Real, Post War Years and Lanterns In The Lake, launched his record label Fulcrum (home of Paleman, Thefft and more) and produced the smouldering "Blind2 for rising vocalist Py. A host of further vocal collaborations with artists both major label and underground are in the pipeline, but we all know how slow these things move, so while we wait, here's a new 12", self-released in a minimal white label style. Most of the press that followed "Unity" referred to the colour in Damu's music, and that's still very much to the fore, but these two new tracks showcase the progress that he's made as a technical producer since his album, bumping in a way that his past material didn't, with a combination of grime's roughness, techno's precision and a healthy dose of distinctive Damu weirdness.

JOE VOLK was asked to support BORIS at their headline show in London and by 2011 the split-release project was fully underway. Boris are well known for spanning multiple genres of music throughout their 20 year history. Supremely heavy. Always unexpected. Their presence on stage is something to be witnessed. They have been classified as space rock, outsider metal, avant rock and many more, all giving a nod to the other-worldliness of the sound they create. It seems fitting then that for this album Boris have produced "Cosmos", a record in three parts that traverses a landscape of cymbal washes and fuzzed glitches in Part 1, to the relentlessly volcanic jagged grooves of Part 2, before descending underwater spirals through Part 3. This journey leads beautifully to the door of their bedfellow Joe Volk. Joe was the original singer in Gonga and Crippled Black Phoenix and released his debut solo album on Invada many moons ago. He is currently working on a new album with Emmy-nominated soundtrack composer Ben Salisbury. His two songs on this split LP, "Call to Sun" and "Finland", are stories in technically sublime acoustics, strings and vocals, but as you would expect from an Invada artist all is not as it seems. His use of silence and hypnotic rhythms mark this out as something entirely different. This split album is a juxtaposition of styles from the same mindset. One story told two ways."

The Alvaret Ensemble is a new improvisatory collective based around Greg Haines (piano), Jan Kleefstra (voice, poems), Romke Kleefstra (guitar and effects) and Sytze Pruiksma (percussion). This self-titled 2xCD/2xLP is our first release, and was recorded over three nights at the Grunewaldkirche in Berlin by Nils Frahm in August of 2011. In keeping with the spirit of the project, other musicians were invited to the sessions to add their own colour and further add to the spontaneity of the recording. In the end, those collaborators played an important part in defining the sound of the album - Iden Reinhart played violin, as did Peter Broderick, while Hilary Jeffery (Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble etc.) provided the album with its mournful trombone tones. Martyn Heyne, who was just there to help out with recording, ended up unleashing the church's organ and bringing a completely new element and sense of power to the album.(...) - The Alvaret Ensemble Greg Haines is a musician and composer based in Berlin. He has released on Miasmah, Sonic Pieces and Preservation, and played concerts around the world, including across Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia. He also has created many scores for dance, including "Day4" with choreographer David Dawson, performed by the Dutch National ballet and the Holland Symfonia. The Kleefstra Brothers are members of the Dutch improv band Piiptsjilling, as well as working together on numerous releases with musicians such as Celer, Gareth Davis, Peter Broderick, Machinefabriek, Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Sytze Pruiksma and Anne Chris Bakker. It invariably involves the experimental guitar playing of Romke in combination with the spoken word in Frisian (old European minority language) by Jan. Sytze Pruiksma is a composer, sound artist and bird-watcher, traditionally educated as a classical percussionist at the conservatory of Amsterdam. After having played as a percussionist in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra (among others), he focussed on his own projects, developing an authentic way of playing that is characterized by a great attention for timbre, inspired on landscapes, nature and birds. The first release from new label Rongorongo shines a light on the grey area between punk and reggae. "Spiky Dread" is the result of a few years of hunting by Wrongtom and Ed Zed, who sifted through a plethora of punk and post-punk oddities, picking their favourite approximations of dub and reggae - a side of punk which is largely overlooked. Opening the set, "America's greatest unknown band" THE OFFS sat snugly amongst the mutant disco and noise bands of early _0s downtown NYC with an infectious brew of punked up funk and ska . their "Cool Down" is a rare moment of downbeat brilliance. The following 13 tracks take in the skanking R&B of THE OFFS compatriots BAD BRAINS, dubbed-out Liverpudlian dancehall from JAH SCOUSE (and two-thirds of YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS), a heavyweight bubbler from South London art collective FAMILY FODDER, and the unlikely combination of prog, punk and reggae from Birmingham's DANGEROUS GIRLS, responsible for some of the best-worst rhyming couplets ever committed to tape. Acclaimed writer and punk professor Vivien Goldman appears here twice, penning liner notes as well as duetting on the lovers rock cover of Bob Marley's "Do it Twice" by her short lived group CHANTAGE, with faders manned by dub experimentalist ADRIAN SHERWOOD. Catch A CERTAIN RATIO in dub mode in their SIR HORATIO guise, whilst back down to Brighton we hear PETER & THE TEST TUBE BABIES tormenting their bassist with "Trapper Aint Got A Bird". Also included is RETURN OF THE PANTHERS' apocalyptic dub rocker "Calling Captain Nemo", which has sat unreleased for 30 years since these CARDIACS associates split up soon after the recording session. RED BEAT offer up a sneering skanker produced by KILLING JOKE's sonic mastermind Mark Lusardi. A brace of Brit-dub legends make an appearance, first on RUTS DC's rhythm collision with MAD PROFESSOR and then Dennis Bovell crops up with THE SLITS, who's "Animal Space" 12" is as unsettling as it is slinky. Finally, the session wouldn't be complete without a trip to the mecca of UK bass music, and Bristol serves up one of it's finest uneasy skankers via the dislocated dub of GLAXO BABIES versioning their own post-punk staple "Who Killed Bruce Lee

In 2001 we released what was to become our final studio album, Leaves Turn Inside You. It was our most ambitious effort: a double album produced by ourselves in a home studio that we built from the ground up (with much thanks to those who helped us, of course). We decided the best approach to translating the album live was adding some new players to the mix: Brandt Sandeno, Unwound's original drummer and a contributor to much of Leaves, became our live keyboard player;
David Scott Stone, an old time compadre from Los Angeles and recent Melvins tour "gun-forhire," our second guitar player. This was no small task. The logistics of adding two members to a band that normally was a three piece was daunting. We weren't quite prepared -- but then again, we rarely were. Unwound was really good at just winging it and barely making it out alive. As we often said, "We'll see what happens." Brandt started performing in early 2001, before the bigger tours that were to follow. When Dave came up from LA that summer, we practiced hard for a couple of weeks, putting together a set that would represent as many songs from the new album as possible while incorporating a few older pieces we thought would benefit from the new lineup. "Lifetime Achievement Award," for instance, had never been performed live with vocals. "Corpse Pose," a song that featured a signature keyboard riff when it appeared on Repetition, was finally given its due. To help keep this mess together we hired Dave Doughman, a soundman we'd used on previous tours. Luckily, he was a fellow with a good sense of humor. Not long into the tour, a friend I had met while on the road with the Melvins decided to come along and record all the shows. This was Mike Zeigler, aka "The Kid," infamous Nirvana fan and rock n roll bootlegger. It's his tapes that have been distilled into what you're about to hear. I'm the first to admit that Unwound was not a consistent live band. Some of the shows on this tour were rough. We nearly broke up two weeks in, after 9/11 threw everything up in the air. You may notice that most of the shows represented on this compilation occurred after 9/11. Prior to that, we had good energy, but we were still working out how to play the songs as a five-piece. Then, for whatever reason, we rocked hard for like a week in the south. Survival instincts kept us alive for a bit afterward, but during the California leg of the tour we self-destructed, and eventually we decided to cancel our European and Japanese tours. Let's be clear: this compilation isn't trying to rewrite history. Listening through hours and hours of tape from this time, I cringed frequently. But there were also sublime moments where I was touched. Think of it as a gift from us to you -- we did the hard work of culling the good stuff from a few dozen shows. Now you can just sit back and listen (at a loud volume, please). I was often surprised by what I heard;
