Kelpe's recent ,I Felt Fuzzy" EP on April was his first drop in a year and it dropped deep, selling out its vinyl run and attracting praise from all forms media, old and new. The muse was clearly high, new tracks were popping out and, with a serious banger of a remix from Neon Jung in the bag, it seemed only right to put out another EP quick sharp. Where ,I Felt Fuzzy" came in at 23 minutes and a whole side of remixes, here the focus is on Kelpe"s own productions, and at 15 minutes with longer workouts leading the opening of each side, followed by shorter more beat-based works, it"s very much the classic extended play single, something Svetlana Industries promotes as the perfect format for electronic music. Kicking off with a rolling, bouncing rhythm played live on kitchen pots and pans, title track ,Bags Of Time" s bounding forward motion belies its relatively relaxed speed. 110BPM is actually a classic Kelpe tempo, that territory between hip hop and house which only a few producers can properly drive. Also classic Kelpe is the fat analogue synth riff that holds down the bottom end, slowly morphing throughout the tune. ,Double Punt" is an elegant and more serious statement, the beat is less obvious, the chord sequence sombre, the sound levels building until it enters a synthy stew. It feels forboding, ambiguous, a new side to Kelpe. On the flip, Neon Jung's Wormhole Remix of ,Bags Of Time" is just breathless, conjuring up a dizzy vortex of sound right from the start. Audibly building on the same blocks as the original, but channeling a whole flow, this is contemporary UK dance music at its finest. At a club friendly 135bpm, it ties the heavy syncopated rhythm tracks of UK bass to an increasingly euphoric melody that peaks at a righteous, giddy and glorious frenzy. The EP"s red lantern is "City" a quiet belter with heavy heavy heavy analogue bass over understated drums, until a very pretty melody drops. With the flavours of classic electro hip hop fattened up for the new millennium, "City"'s synth parts are poetic and beautiful, and it's a subtle little treasure to close off the disc. Having spent most of 2012 so far further establishing itself as a global bastion of forward thinking electronic dance music, the Rwina label is changing things up a little with an EP from young Dutch producer Jameszoo. On ,Faaveelaa", Jameszoo displays the kind of brazen ingenuity that youth affords by drawing inspiration from dancehall before finding its edge to craft an entirely new take on the genre and using that to paint a colourful sonic picture of what he imagines a Favela might look like. Sounds mad? In a good way, it is. By his own admittance the picture he paints is also a bit messy, yet there"s beauty in chaos. As for the inspiration, it can sometimes be hard to hear at first though anyone familiar with Jamaica"s dancehall tradition will recognise the instantly catchy quality of ,Faaveelaa"s riddims. ,I You Cherrypearl" sets the tone, and it"s firmly tongue in cheek. Eerie melodies bubble slowly to the surface until a hint of percussion signals the arrival of the riddim and before you know it heads are snapping and bodies are moving, though they"re struggling to figure out exactly how they"re supposed to do it. Things then switch up towards a more hip hop lean with lazers flying overhead and before the listener has time to settle into this new groove all of a sudden we"re back in Jamaica. Or was it Brazil? Visiting a psychedelic favela wouldn"t be complete without a dose of hallucinogenic drugs, and ,Mrm Aid S" is the proverbial acid tab. The riddim is seemingly broken, its percussion and bass pulses coming at you from various angles while strange animals make noises in the back. Where the hell is this again? Who knows, just enjoy it and let the percussion at the end pull you gently out of the trip. It"ll all make sense. A lullaby done in a dancehall fashion might sound like ,Doc Pipper, about as close as it gets with a childlike melody contorted over bass heavy kicks and rolling percussion with processed vocal chops. It"s perhaps the track that displays the most obvious dancehall influences yet still manages to sound unlike anything ever done in that style. Unless you live in that imagined favela, use of this to put the kids to sleep is not recommended. Things end on as delirious a note as they started with ,Psitta Riddim", coming across like a horde of robots kicking over a kindergarten. Once more twisting the inspiration as far as you could imagine, Jameszoo employs percussion in the most bizarre yet satisfying ways, shakers floating on one side while skin drums tumble on the other and a distorted Jamaican vocal proclaims "ya man!". Jameszoo"s debut for Rwina shows he has plenty of ideas and isn"t afraid of experimenting with them. Whether you bump it at home or in the club, ,Faaveelaa" is sure to surprise you and make you move in ways you never thought possible Record Label: Rwina Style: Electro

There's no way to know why CBS Records unceremoniously dumped Rotomagus and the Chico Magnetic Band after one single apiece; suffice to say that decision was a poor one, as both bands have (quite rightly) developed a cult-like following over the years. All in all, the artistic trajectory of Rotomagus was peculiar: they started out as a harmony pop-psych band, shifted through a brief Jimi Hendrix-ian interlude (`The Sky Turns Red'), straight into a Vanilla Fudge groove; they then went down in flames as a hair-raising monolithic heavy rock power trio. On Julian Cope's excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: "The first time I heard this track (`Fighting Cock'), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before "Raw Power"?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore's "Kingdom Come" LP and THAT'S it, brother." French magazine Rock & Folk was succinct: "Rotomagus create an emotional music, violent, even aggressive." Violent. Aggressive. Intense. On this disc we bring you the entire output of Rotomagus, including an album-length demo from 1971, the band's tumultuous, thunderous swansong, recorded as a super jam (live with no overdubs). Our Lion Productions and Martyrs of Pop edition of Rotomagus comes replete with a bi-lingual 32-page booklet, with the entirety of the Seth Man's article on the band, plus the band's history in both English and French, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper, manufactured using biogas energy. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardcore-with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album "Cold Fact" is the basis for ,Searching For Sugar Man", a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up ,Coming From Reality" - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk. "Searching For Sugar Man", a Red Box Films & Passion Pictures Production in association with Canfield Pictures & The Documentary Company, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., was a big hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and then went on to screen at SXSW, Tribeca, and the Sheffield Doc Fest. The film opens in New York, Los Angeles, and London (via Studio Canal) on July 27th and will play in other cities throughout the coming months. Back in the late '70s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, ,Cold Fact" bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled "Coming From Reality" and produced by Steve Rowland, Rodriguez drifted into obscurity, even being subject to rumours that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire onstage. "Cold Fact"took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid-era South Africa. Banned by the government, the album became a country-wide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, working in construction and renovation (he also ran for mayor), Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away. Decades later, two South African fans, Stephen ugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they'd heard. Their story forms the basis of ,Searching For Sugar Man". Both sides of the story, Rodriguez's life in Detroit and the subsequent impact of his music in South Africa, proved fascinating to Stockholm-based documentary filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. His short documentary films for Swedish Television's international cultural weekly show Kobra became the basis for such films as ,Men Who Stare At Goats" (George Clooney) and "The Terminal" (Tom Hanks). The evolution of the financing, production, and filming of ,Searching For Sugar Man" is as fascinating and complex as the life of Rodriguez himself. "I describe myself as 'musico-politico'," Rodriguez said recently. "I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time. Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. We pulled our '99 Ford E-Series up in front of our practice space in Brooklyn. It was a Tuesday afternoon. It had been 4 months. We'd been across the US 3 times, hitting 46 of the lower 48. One of us rode with severe food poisoning across the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest for 3 days, throwing up out of the back door, refusing to stop for treatment and miss shows. Because we couldn't afford to. We'd been back to Australia, where one of us, in a well-intentioned but misguided attempt to pad the coffers at the dog track, lost every penny he had. And we'd been in Europe for 6 weeks, 17 countries, from UK to Russia. In Moscow, a man wearing a watch that cost more than the building the show was held in offered to sell one of us a woman. To take home. For life. So yeah, we were tired. So we cancelled the remaining 2 months and got back to writing songs. But the money was gone. Re-enter one J Robbins, who made Get Saved with us. He needed a studio built. So over the course of months, we put in the floors, soundproofed it, renovated the front office, and we made Scott replace the toilets. Every couple of weeks we'd go down to the Magpie Cage in Baltimore (deep in "Wire" country) and make an improvement in the studio and record whatever we'd recently put together.
