From Steve Hauschildt: "This new album was recorded in both Vancouver and Cleveland. I used almost 20 different instruments, from every decade from the 60's to the present, most of them synthesizers, drum machines and effects. This gives the album a much wider palette than my last, Tragedy & Geometry, and it also gives it a more classic/new sound, yet it is still a logical follow up to that LP. I also used some techniques in the studio where I controlled older instruments with the computer and this opened up new ways for me to explore their potential as well as their innate idiosyncrasies. I was very interested in the artificiality of vocal or choir-like sounds that emulate a person or group singing, and how this has evolved with the advancement of musical technology over the years. I also sang myself, and used a vocoder, not to sound robotic, but to remove the connotations of gender. Those sounds are androgynous because they carry both masculine and feminine characteristics. I was inspired to carry this idea into music mainly because of the work of Camille Paglia and Donna Haraway. I feel that the album in a sense treads the imaginary boundary between Nature and Artifice. It is postmodern, but not necessarily a post-Freudian statement on cyborg theory or feminism. Rather it is a musically mimetic domain where these ideas freely collide and coalesce." Exactly one year on from his last album, Steve Hauschildt returns with his most commanding work to date. Electrifying Essex-based octet (there's eight of them, y'know) DINGUS KHAN, sometimes referred to as Blur-meets-Slipknot, release their debut album, "Support Mistley Swans", via fierce panda. The Back Story: "Rising like a behometh from the sludge of the Stour Estuary, Dingus Khan are exactly what you'd imagine a band with a name like Dingus Khan to be. They consist of three drummers to keep your heart beating. Three bass players to keep your feet tapping. A singing guitarist to melt young girls' hearts. And an electric ukelele demon just to keep you on your toes. Let Dingus Khan play their rock and roll music my boy, and let them play it Hard and Fast. Then Slow and Steady. Then Hard and Fast." So started the press release for DINGUS KHAN's searingly manic debut single, "Knifey Spoony", which was released on fierce panda sister label Label Fandango back in March of this year. It was so perfect we used it again on the press release for the follow-up single, the epic whistlefest that was "Made A List" (Giant Haystacks Records, July). And so immaculately does it still encapsulate the sixteen-legged groove machinery of DINGUS KHAN it may as well fill a large chunk of this, the press release for their debut album entitled "Support Mistley Swans". The East Of Englandshire runs through the DINGUS KHAN veins like so many top quality narcotics: they come from Manningtree, on the very northern tip of Essex, and indeed next door to Mistley, where the famous Mistley swans do their misty-eyed swanning; in spite of those Essex roots they have been heartily embraced by neighbours BBC Suffolk, who fast-tracked the band onto the Latitude bill in the summer; they happily ply their trade in venues like the Grinning Rat in Ipswich; and on October 10th they have been invited to support The Fall and The Undertones at Norwich Epic, which is itself a benefit gig for the John Peel Centre Of Creative Arts in Stowmarket. It's a good choice, too: if John Peel were around today he would surely embrace DINGUS KHAN to his random musical bosom and never let them go, not least because when fully armed Dingus Khan number eight (that's E.I.G.H.T), including Ben Brown (lead vocals / guitar), Josh Court (electric ukelele), Tom Armstrong (bass), Adam Toms (bass), Alex Dunne (bass). Nick Daldry (drums), Paul Miller (percussion) and Gareth Burney (percussion). Apparently they have issues with turning down puppy-eyed musicians. Or as DINGUS KHAN have put it themselves on several press releases in the past: "There is a new exciting music being made, with subtle harmonies and fierce grinding dischords, A music so powerful that it would drive us mad if only our ears were tuned to the sound of it." Kranky was a bit surprised earlier this year when Jessica Bailiff contacted us and asked if we wanted to preview her new album for possible release. We had no idea she had even been working on an album, let alone had completed one, and we were rewarded with a listen to her most compelling album to date. After being in Europe for 5 weeks as a touring member of Boduf Songs, Jessica Bailiff spent much of 2011, writing and recording At the Down-Turned Jagged Rim of the Sky in her spartan home studio. Sequestering herself through the hot summer months until finished, she then passed the tracks on to her friend Odd Nosdam for final mixing. Down-tuned, distorted bass guitar adds a new color to her palette, but familiar ones also come into play: fuzzed and delayed electric guitar, organ, piano, cello, and drums. Noisy pop-tinged love songs nestle slyly in a bed of off-kilter lullabies and dark, metallic waltzes. No need to recycle descriptives like "lo-fi" or "hushed vocals" - these are spurious words. By fine-tuning a mix of sweet pop rock and determined guitar chops on their second album, Busting Visions, Zeus has become more focused and, in turn, more enjoyable; this is the one that’ll bring the band’s sound into its own. You can’t call their brand of rock heavy and hard so much as energetic and ear-grabbing. Brewing cavalier pop with hushed funk, Zeus at times emulates both French pop-rock masterminds Phoenix and the less alt-country iterations of Blitzen Trapper with their fun class of jumpy rock. The Toronto foursome’s slight classic rock tendencies, previously courted on their debut, Say Us, to adequate results, become strengths here. On “Hello Tender Love” – one of the jewels of the album, channeling the now-defunct NY funk band Julius C – the band pumps a powerful, soul-dripping chorus through an excellent transition into the McCartney-like playhouse affair of “Messenger’s Way”. This isn’t nearly the only clever moment on the record, but it sure sticks with you the most. Recalling songs like the laid-back “The Renegade” from 2010, the pleading “Let It Go, Don’t Let It Go” echoes the bittersweet melancholy of Steely Dan’s saddest lyrical moments, and “Proud and Beautiful” is another brief softie with a tender swagger. The band’s earnest attitude makes for eclectic instrumentation that never offends but only knocks you off your feet if you’re truly paying attention. Overall, elements like harlequin piano chords, guitars imitating kazoos, and click-clack percussion could have been embroidered to greater detail. The more outward moments on Busting Visions, such as opener “Are You Gonna Waste My Time?” and “With Eyes Closed”, recall groovy, romantic joy from decades ago, and on “Cool Blue (And the Things You Do)”, Rob Drake, Mike O’Brien, Neil Quinn, and Carlin Nicholson play as a more theatrical, spaced-out Spoon, with lingering jazz harmonies, vocal grit, and resounding bell chimes. Keeping up with this boldness and experimentation could yield future material worthy of Mount Olympus. Record Label: So Recordings Style: Rock
