THE PHEROMOANS are a six piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Wedded to the mundane, surreal reportage of our lives as reflected in the media, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom of everyday life. These are songs for the back of the queue, songs from underneath the ergonomic desk, a glimpse through the commuter window, blasted through with brilliant suburban sunshine. Over the last three years the band have released a slew of releases, including numerous EPs, 7"s and three albums through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press and their own imprint Savoury Days. These releases largely focussed on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like pathway through the songs. New album, "Does This Guy Stack Up?" witnesses a slight departure from their sound of old. With the recent addition of keyboard/violin player Dan Bolger to the band, their songs have leaned into a more pop-balanced realm, with the band's experimental tape collage approach sounding more natural than ever. The bass (Christian Butler aka The Octogram), drums (James Hines) and guitars (James Tranmer, Alex Garran) together forging a coherent foundation for Walker's voice to ramble amongst the radiant synth and electronic flourishes. ld Lord Fauntleroy' is a joyous barrage of roaming bass, primal beats and droning keyboard, whilst 'Waterworld' propels itself through drifts of violin fog. Central to the appeal of The Pheromoans are Russell Walker's insightful, often wonderfully humorous, self-deprecating lyrics that paint a picture of all of us as outsiders. 'Don't Mention It' for instance is the only song we know that references both Royal Ascot and Puppetry Of The Penis. Finding much material in the slow and steady decline of the 21st century and its vain pursuits, Walker isn't afraid to rattle the cage of populist politics, and other comfortable ways of thinking, sighting Mariella Frostrup as well as Richard Littlejohn in the crosshairs. However, it's often when he turns his critical eye on himself, that Walker becomes most profound. "I've been the victim of subtle putdowns" admits Walker on the barnstorming 'm A You-Know-What'. "Scared of being late for work, I have to face the men-folk, I regret all decisions" he voices on rab A Chair', a message further accentuated by the song's prowling bassline, incessant beat and ascending stomp. It's hard to write about what you know, when what you know is increasingly marginalised but this album proves The Pheromoans are at their best when shooting from the sidelines. Playing music together for over 20 years has given the Bell brothers plenty of time to learn how to build off of one another's strengths as they write, record, and tour. During the three years Michael and Jared spent writing and recording their new album ,Symbolyst", they spent more time apart than they ever had. After several years of steady touring in support of two full-length releases and an ep with This Will Destroy You, LYMBIC SYSTEM found themselves on opposite sides of the globe, with Michael living in Japan and Jared studying graphic design in Brooklyn. The geographic distance led them to rely more than ever on the trust they've developed over the years they've spent creating together. ,Symbolyst" draws on the band's eclectic pool of influences-The Jackon 5's funk, Jung's dream theory, Bergman's existentialism, Baudelaire's prose, and Wright's organic architecture. Jethro Fox is a Biblically named singer from a family of Atheists, and his celestial music is set to light up 2012. Brought up in Colchester, Essex and sharing a proud 6th Form College music teacher with Damon Albarn, Jethro moved to Liverpool to study and has since become a central character in a once again thriving music community. A multi-instrumentalist, he has played in most of the new bands in the area's resurgent scene, which is centred on the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Now playing under his own name, Jethro's own music is urgent and suggests a deep affinity with the classic symphonic pop of The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison and Grizzly Bear. A few months ago, Jethro posted his first track online, "Before". Double Vinyl is a 45RPM LP! "Negotiations", the new album from THE HELIO SEQUENCE, the fifth full-length and the band's first in over four years, was written, recorded and produced by the band in their studio in Portland, Oregon. THE HELIO SEQUENCE would sound different had it not been for a flood. In 2009, while touring in support of ,Keep Your Eyes Ahead", singer-guitarist Brandon Summers got an unexpected phone call in the middle of the night. Back home in Portland, the band's studio/practice space was under nearly a foot of water. Heavy rains had caused the building's plumbing to overflow like a geyser. But Summers and drummer-keyboardist, Benjamin Weikel, were lucky: All of their best equipment was either on tour with them, or racked high enough off the studio floor to be spared. Still, the band needed a new home and they decided to use this opportunity to try something different in a new studio space. For reasons related to this new environment and not, recording for ,Negotiations" proved to be the loosest, and most free-form the duo has ever done. For all of that, ,Negotiations" doesn't demand deconstruction. Sean Ragon has been active in the DIY punk, industrial and experimental music communities on the east coast for over 15 years while also runing a record store and label in Brooklyn (Heaven Street and Blind Prophet Records, respectively). He has been recording under the moniker of Cult of Youth for the last five years. For this album, Ragon built his own recording studio from scratch in the back of his record store. This allowed him to control every aspect of the album and to take his time recording; he plays five different instruments on LWP and also engineered and mixed the album by himself. The record features contributions from Glenn Maryansky on drums and Christiana Key on violin as well as percussion from the enigmatic ning nong and female vocals from former Battletorn vocalist Beverly Hames. For long time fans of the project, Love Will Prevail sees the marriage of the spontaneity of the earlier releases with the better recording quality of the more recent eponymous lP. This album expands on the psychedelic neofolk foundation of the early work and adds lush atmospheres not dissimilar from Austrian post- industrial futurists Novy Svet (or even the more haunting side of late-60s Miles Davis). There is also an intentional nod to the Crass Records bands that influenced Ragon as a teenager and a tasteful hint of Velvet Underground worship. The past year has seen the band tour extensively throughout Europe and America, with a breakthrough performance at 2011s Austin Psych Festival: ,The Blue Angel Lounge could have easily pulled off a headlining spot. Their performance was certainly one of the most beautiful that we heard at Austin Psych Fest." - The Austinist. Their ascent continues with their invitation to support the Brian Jonestown Massacre on their US tour in April and March. A Brief History: Founded in 2006 by Nils O. and Dennis 'Mel' Melster, the band completed their self-titled debut in 2008, of which 500 vinyl copies were self-released. One of the copies made it into the hands of Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3, who subsequently passed it on to a friend at 8MM Musik. The band were signed shortly after. An appearance at the UK's Dream Machine Festival in 2008 led to the track 'The God', from their debut, being included on the UK neo-psych compilation 'Open Your Mind', later pronounced DIY Compilation Of The Week by the BBC in 2009. Following their first ever show in Berlin in 2009, Anton Newcombe was impressed enough to offer to help with production, and, with his studio wizardry and the band's already stellar songwriting and musical talent, 'Narcotica' was recorded in under two weeks. 2011 was spent touring extensively in Europe and North America. Born Britt Traynham in Jacksonville FL, Batsauce's resume includes production work for artists such as The Abs, Mr. Lif, Vinne Paz, Dillon, Qwazaar, Akrobatik, Patrick Evan, Bahamadia and George Clinton. He has produced hundreds of tracks over his 12-year career, and has built a reputation as one of the world's adept and adaptable beat-makers. BATSAUCE may be best-known for his work as one-third of The Smile Rays, which includes his wife Lady Daisey and Paten Locke, both of whom have joined him for extensive bookings across Europe and the United States in recent years. "Starcrossed" takes to the Shakespearean notion of forbidden love epitomized for all time in Romeo and Juliet and gives it a futuristic-or shall we say contemporary-twist. It tells the story of an alien who falls in love with a woman on Earth, which often leads to trouble, even for other Earthlings. BATSAUCE draws on a wide range of cultural influences, but brings them all into harmony for the kind of progressive beats that he and his circles have dealt in for ages, but which have lately returned front-and-center to industry dominance. "Starcrossed" follows up on BATSAUCE's acclaimed collaborations with the MC Qwazaar (Typical Cats) on the "Style Be the King" EP and the later "Bat Meets Blaine" LP, both released on Galapagos4 in 2011. It deviates somewhat from a tradition established by "Gypsy Diaries" (2008) and "Spy Vs. Spy" (2009), both of which were inspired by his travels.
