We pulled our '99 Ford E-Series up in front of our practice space in Brooklyn. It was a Tuesday afternoon. It had been 4 months. We'd been across the US 3 times, hitting 46 of the lower 48. One of us rode with severe food poisoning across the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest for 3 days, throwing up out of the back door, refusing to stop for treatment and miss shows. Because we couldn't afford to. We'd been back to Australia, where one of us, in a well-intentioned but misguided attempt to pad the coffers at the dog track, lost every penny he had. And we'd been in Europe for 6 weeks, 17 countries, from UK to Russia. In Moscow, a man wearing a watch that cost more than the building the show was held in offered to sell one of us a woman. To take home. For life. So yeah, we were tired. So we cancelled the remaining 2 months and got back to writing songs. But the money was gone. Re-enter one J Robbins, who made Get Saved with us. He needed a studio built. So over the course of months, we put in the floors, soundproofed it, renovated the front office, and we made Scott replace the toilets. Every couple of weeks we'd go down to the Magpie Cage in Baltimore (deep in "Wire" country) and make an improvement in the studio and record whatever we'd recently put together. Deer Creek Canyon", Sera Cahoone's third solo album, sees her ruminating on the gravitational pull of home. Titled for the Colorado canyon where she came of age, Deer Creek Canyon was recorded in 2012 at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington, and co-produced by Sera and Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver). Since migrating to Seattle in 1998, Sera has played with Carissa's Weird, Band of Horses, Betsy Olson, and singer-songwriter Patrick Park. She released her solo debut in 2006, and her widely acclaimed SubPop debut "Only as the Day Is Long" in 2008. "Deer Creek Canyon" delves deeper and sees her voice remarkably stronger than on her past albums. Where her previous efforts explored the complicated throes of dark emotions, this album is more richly focused. Home is even present in the more personal songs struggling with various facets of love and friendship ("Worry All Your Life", "Shakin' Hands"). Jookabox, the name of Indianapolis native David ""Moose"" Adamson's musical project, sounds like a child slurring the words ""Grandpa Jukebox,"" implying filial connection with an archaic musical object. Either that or the intoxicated pronunciation of a strange blues artist's nom de plume. When David was in grade school, his uncle took note of his developing interest in hip-hop and loaned him a four-track. They mixed tracks together and the young Adamson would write rhymes to sing over them, including a double-boombox sequel to Fu-Schnicken's ""What's Up Doc (Can We Rock?)"" called ""Sufferin' Succotash (I Got Whiplash)"" At first the beats came from instrumental sides of cassette singles, then from presets on his uncle's drum machine, and finally from his very own beat machine (a Christmas gift), the Yamaha DD-9. But that was a long time ago. Since then, through various incarnations and collaborations with groups such as Archer Avenue and BIGBIGcar, Adamson's musical interests and excursions have crystallized into a startlingly singular and eclectic songwriting strategy. Jookabox's debut record, Scientific Cricket, samples a kind of primordial blues sound, children's sidewalk-chalk rhymes and Appalachian folk. But his latest effort finds him moving into new, unplumbed territories. Ropechain pinwheels kaleidoscopically through old-time spirituals, punk, chain-gang hymnal, deep house, and club music hip-hop, blending these disparate elements into a cohesive and unique synthesis.
