For fans of Oneida, Ex Models and Can. Negative Pegasus' sound is a world away from their sunny, seaside home in Southern England. Richard Netley (Guitar/Vocals), Todd Jordan (Guitar/Vocals) and Carla Foss (Drums) mix droning, grinding loops with wild, sheets of guitar feedback to create a malevolent stew of hard-psyche and woozy, drone-garage. Born from a mutual love of the NYC-rock of Oneida, the free-time whirl of Sightings and the joint-snapping mathematics of KILLL and Zu - Neg Peg's repetitive rhythms are overlaid with ghostly vocals, primal, pounding drums and a thick, choking haze of reverberant effects. The tracks on debut album LOOMING weave between primordial bone-shakers, stretched-out growls and ethereal retro-pop nuggets. Recorded over a period of 17 hours in an empty warehouse space in Sussex with producer Steffan Eliades, the end-result is equally joyous and disturbing. "Steffan is really inventive", explains Todd, "he has a wonderful mind for perverting electronics and turning broken musical gear into awesome, evil, undead versions of their previous selves. He fits right in!" "One of the amps Richard recorded with had a speaker that was totally disconnected from the rest of the electronics, and we didn't even notice until after the recordings were finished. That's Steffan's influence. He's our glitch-wrangler." The Neg Peg live experience is an apocalyptic blend of Daft Punk rhythms, shamanistic stomps and swamp-rock Creedence licks? "I fucking love Creedence", continues Todd, "We share the same basic concept, it's all about riffs and echo. Remove the country bits from Creedence and Neg Peg isn't so different, really. We pulled our '99 Ford E-Series up in front of our practice space in Brooklyn. It was a Tuesday afternoon. It had been 4 months. We'd been across the US 3 times, hitting 46 of the lower 48. One of us rode with severe food poisoning across the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest for 3 days, throwing up out of the back door, refusing to stop for treatment and miss shows. Because we couldn't afford to. We'd been back to Australia, where one of us, in a well-intentioned but misguided attempt to pad the coffers at the dog track, lost every penny he had. And we'd been in Europe for 6 weeks, 17 countries, from UK to Russia. In Moscow, a man wearing a watch that cost more than the building the show was held in offered to sell one of us a woman. To take home. For life. So yeah, we were tired. So we cancelled the remaining 2 months and got back to writing songs. But the money was gone. Re-enter one J Robbins, who made Get Saved with us. He needed a studio built. So over the course of months, we put in the floors, soundproofed it, renovated the front office, and we made Scott replace the toilets. Every couple of weeks we'd go down to the Magpie Cage in Baltimore (deep in "Wire" country) and make an improvement in the studio and record whatever we'd recently put together. Deer Creek Canyon", Sera Cahoone's third solo album, sees her ruminating on the gravitational pull of home. Titled for the Colorado canyon where she came of age, Deer Creek Canyon was recorded in 2012 at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington, and co-produced by Sera and Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver). Since migrating to Seattle in 1998, Sera has played with Carissa's Weird, Band of Horses, Betsy Olson, and singer-songwriter Patrick Park. She released her solo debut in 2006, and her widely acclaimed SubPop debut "Only as the Day Is Long" in 2008. "Deer Creek Canyon" delves deeper and sees her voice remarkably stronger than on her past albums. Where her previous efforts explored the complicated throes of dark emotions, this album is more richly focused. Home is even present in the more personal songs struggling with various facets of love and friendship ("Worry All Your Life", "Shakin' Hands"). Cahoone is singing from a firmer foundation this time around, trusting the simplicity, bending against the elements like those trees in Deer Creek Canyon. Listen closely, the music feels like home.
