At various points over the last six years and across three albums, an EP and single, a rotating cast of at least ten other people have formed some version of CYMBALS. More still have contributed to Light In Your Mind. Producer Kristian Robinson (Capitol K) is a major presence across the album and played a key role in guiding the transition from the band's sound on their previous record to this one. Jorge Elbrecht, whose work with Ariel Pink and Tamaryn had inspired the band, mixed the record in Miami, adding those elusive final touches that make a good sounding record great. Consequently, the music itself possesses a sedimentary quality, a residue of each contributing member compressed into what it is that band have become. The band first emerged during the early 2000s and found success with their debut album The Coral and follow up Magic and Medicine. Their selftitled debut album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize and later voted the fourth best album of the year by NME Magazine. Roots & Echoes is their fourth full-length studio album. It was originally released on 6 August 2007, and debuted in the UK Albums Chart at No. 8. The album spawned three hit singles; "Who's Gonna Find Me", "Jacqueline" and "Put the Sun Back". This is The Coral's last album with Bill Ryder-Jones, who departed in 2008 to start a very successful solo-career. 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of Roots & Echoes. Transgressive Records release Bruise Blood: Reimagining Steve Reich's ‘Music for Pieces of Wood’, a collaboration between Polica, an electronic pop band based in Minneapolis, and s t a r g a z e, a Berlin-based chamber orchestra interested in pop and electronics. The release sees them reinterpret Steve Reich’s 1973 composition Music For Pieces Of Wood. The first of a pair of records from this collaboration, this release sees them take minimalist pioneer Steve Reich’s Music For Pieces of Wood corrupting its polyrhythms across a continuous twenty minutes of music, pushing the boundaries of both artists in a truly engrossing and transportative collaboration. The second release in the series, to follow in September on Transgressive Records, is a more song-based album, containing new material and inspired versions of unexpected pop songs, turned inside out to expose their essence. s t a r g a z e is an ever-evolving project, marrying modern composition with alternative attitudes and sounds. Transgressive Records started working with André de Ridder, co-founder of s t a r g a z e, on his arrangement of Terry Riley’s In C Mali with Africa Express – a project that sets the precedent for this new release with its radical, yet perhaps definitive, performance of a minimalist classic.
