Led by Daniel Smith, the band has gone under several guises starting with The Danielson Famile - the Von Traps of the underground when Daniel recorded to a four track with back-ups from his four siblings Andrew, David, Megan and Rachel - with additional help from friends Jason Faunce and Missy Forsyth, to be joined by Daniel's wife Elin for 'Fetch The Compass Kids'. 2001's 'Fetch The Compass Kids' was a collaboration between the Danielson Famile and Steve Albini, who slept on an air mattress in southern New Jersey for several nights just to complete the task. This unlikely meeting of the minds produced a whirling dervish of an album, one that is both crisp and deep, with multi-colours and multi-Gospel-rhythms from the Smith family and friends on a gypsy-like parade

There's new reason to rejoice now that this lost classic from '94 -- the world's first glimpse of the remarkable Smith family of New Jersey, best known as the Danielson Famile -- is being made available once again to the public. The group, led by eldest brother Daniel, initially had critics and audiences alike scratching their heads wondering if their collision of aesthetics and spirituality was, as some put it, "an elaborate put-on." In those days artists and rockers alike were dumbfounded by just how complicated a marriage the Famile's collision of aesthetics and faith seemed to them. In '94, there weren't many artists weened on Sonic Youth and the Pixies who were as serious about spirituality as the Danielson Famile. . Daniel and Co., however, have helped contribute to a partial breaking down of that barrier of cool, and it all started with A PRAYER FOR EVERY HOUR, a 24-song cycle of tunes intended to be performed or experienced once an hour, on the hour, as a devotional gesture of faith. Now, nearly 20 years on, this special debut will be available on CD once again.

Opening arms wider than ever, Daniel Smith made a long list of artists who had worked with Danielson over the years and other folks who planned to work together at some point. This list led to working with family, making new friends, and keeping the old. All joined together - both the well-known (Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Why?) and not as well-known artists (Sereena Maneesh, Leopulde, Half-handed Cloud) - each bringing his or her own skills and ideas to Daniel's songs and voice, resulting in this crowning achievement. It has brought Danielson back from whence it came, by returning to the eponymous "Danielson" moniker and reuniting old friends and collaborators. Mythology-hounds have found in Danielson the full package - tuning into their frequency (whether on headphones or at a party) can be as deeply rewarding in a literary-visual-musical way as with canonical acts such as Sun Ra, Parliament and David Bowie..

While he's explored pretty much every highway and dark alley of song craft in his long career, he's never before applied one consistent approach over the course of even one record. The new technique is considerably more disciplined: he first collects - in the (figuratively) selfsame notebook - phrases and titles, bits of overheard conversation, snatches of misheard movie dialogue, thus providing an assortment of lines all of which he considers strong enough to serve as potential song titles. He then assembles these song titles into lyrics, which because each line is strong enough to stand on its own, contain neither bloat nor the least misstep. When he's happy with the lyrics, he writes a melody for each lyric. He then sits down with the guitar and figures out chords that fit the melodies. Sounds pretty straightforward, but for ROBERT POLLARD the result provides a structure uniquely suited to his muse. From the rollicking Anglophilic "Extra Fool's Day" to the pithy, elegiac "This Place Has Everything", "Blazing Gentlemen" is no mere confectioner's conceit. Veiny with POLLARD's signature depth-charged melodic inventiveness, multiple listens reveal multiple meanings, shape-shifting moods, and lyrical twists that will delight even the word-shyest rock-phobe. The music itself is standard-issue POLLARDIAN guitar wizardry, unusual chord progressions made up of unusual chords jutting against off-kilter rhythms in ways that shouldn't work but never do not, only to be overshadowed by another bravura vocal performance, occasionally larded with (unusual) harmonies or plain weird delay/reverb/compression effects that only ever add to the tremendous bustle of joy (see "Lips of Joy" for an on-the-nose demo) applied liberally like primer to the multi-hued tracks. ROBERT POLLARD fans are fond of making extreme statements in support of their favorite songwriter

Wreckless Eric Presents The Len Bright Combo" is the first album by THE LEN BRIGHT COMBO and the first in a series of WRECKLESS ERIC reissues by Fire Records. One of the most influential artists to emerge from the Stiff Records stable in the late 1970's and early 1980's , WRECKLESS ERIC inspired a legion of artists from Yo La Tengo to The Vaccines and from Marianne Faithful to Lilly Allen. THE LEN BRIGHT COMBO was one of Eric's early post-Stiff bands, recorded in the mid-80s. These rough garage rock albums stayed true to his DIY roots and have now become very difficult to get hold of. The reissues feature new packaging as well as extensive liner notes from the one and only WRECKLESS ERIC. An explosive beat combo ruling over the mid-80's UK Medway scene, THE LEN BRIGHT COMBO paired WRECKLESS ERIC with the ramshackle rhythm section of Russ Wilkins and Bruce Band. Combo Time" was the second and last album to be released by Medway veterans THE LEN BRIGHT COMBO, featuring front man and songwriter Wreckless Eric. One of the most influential artists to emerge from the Stiff Records stable, Eric had one of punk's biggest hits with "Whole Wide World" in 1977. Following the immediate rush of their debut with a quick punch to the jaw, The Len Bright Combo returned to their DIY recording set-up for a second long player in the same year, making sure to capture their ramshackle power before it was suddenly extinguished. These recording have now become extremely rare and sought after, so these Fire reissues are sure to be very welcome. An explosive beat combo ruling over the mid-80's UK Medway scene, The Len Bright Combo paired Wreckless Eric with the ramshackle rhythm section of Russ Wilkins and Bruce Band. Putting today's garage pretenders to shame, the combo recorded two albums of rough and ready pop blasts, with the shake and stomp never losing Eric's sharp wit, or melodic punch. Hardly in step with the UK fads of the day, the trio toured with their own PA system, blasting out performances like each one could be their last. New Zealand's ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES return with their second full-length album, "Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music", a surreal road-trip through a hyper primal, fuzzed-out, synth laden, garden of Eden. Recorded in Italy in September 2012, in the midst of an epic 70+ gig European tour, this album captures the band as a live, hot, dynamic unit ... a futuristic bunga-bunga party band for 22nd century boom-boom cults! Born out of Wellington's fertile creative music scene in 2009, the Spheres quickly gained a crowd of devotees, entranced by their sonically and visually ecstatic live shows. Their sound is an explosive brew concocted from the primitive, machine-like drumming of Jemi Hemi Mandala, the quicksilver synths of Mos Iocos, the intricate bass lines of EtonalE and the psychedelic biscuit tin guitar work of Baba Rossa. Chanted vocals bring a hypnotic, trance inducing element to many of the tracks, especially in the crowd favourite, "Mind Over Might". Recorded onto 24-track tape at Outside Inside Studio, Montebelluna, Italy, this was the first time the band had recorded in a real studio. Sweaty summer nights, sleep-depriving mosquitoes and abundant fresh local funghi made for a magic combination, and the group banged out all the tunes in one or two takes. The vintage recording gear and mixing talents of Mojo Matt Bordin bring a garage quality to the bands' ancient future funk, and NZ artist Kerry Ann Lee's other-wordly landscapes and magic voodoo scenes adorn the album's cover. Two weeks after recording, half the band's gear was stolen from the back of their tour van in Poland.
