The former SPACEMEN 3 drummer and multi-instrumentalist self-released and sold out of a limited run of 300 copies of the album earlier in the year to great acclaim, including a rave review in Mojo and it was album of the month in Rough Trade Shops who described the album like this: "Lavishing in pop structures but drawing in myriad influences to the wondrous black hole, "The Call Of The Cosmos" features some shimmering spaciousness but also sleazy exotica-themes, not unlike a Lee Hazelwood production infected with Joe Meek's ghost. Roswell's own songwriting and voice recalls a solar-fried Bobby Gillespie, an artist he no doubt originally influenced with the SPACEMEN 3. Elsewhere, there's truly psychedelic excursions into outsiderdom which come off like The Seeds mutating ever larger into lysergic-dipped monsters." "The Call of the Cosmos" features the singles "Interplanetary Spaceliner","Give Peace Another Chance" and a remix of "The Girl From Orbit", cementing the elements which have infused Sterling's work since his days with SPACEMEN 3, his multi instrumental driving force behind THE DARKSIDE and his innovative psychedelic soundscapes as a studio engineer and producer.

Last year's first sneak peak at new material from The Chills in over a decade heralded the return of one of New Zealand's most beloved bands. Originally released only digitally, the track "Molten Gold" will be made available as a 7" single in July on Fire Records with an extra-special b-side - a reworking of The Chills' classic "Pink Frost". The Chills are a band from Dunedin, New Zealand fronted by the rare talent of Martin Phillipps. Originally formed in 1980, The Chills had a revolving cast of band members with Phillipps remaining the only constant. His knack for writing fantastic pop songs led to chart hits back home and a cult following around the world. "Molten Gold" was released to coincide with Phillipps' 50th birthday, ladling his stirring vocal over chiming guitars and spring-breeze-fresh-sounding strings, this is quintessential Chills and a reinvigorated return to form for the indie luminaries who propelled the much celebrated unedin Sound'. "Pink Frost" was originally recorded in 1982 and has been performed at nearly every gig that the band has played since then. It is a unique piece of music and it has always changed and evolved over the years as the various line-ups of the band have approached it in subtly different ways. The current line-up of The Chills has been stable for many years now and with the band realising that 'Pink Frost' had recently become something different and distinct again, it felt right to capture it once more in the studio - with tremendous results. As Martin himself comments: "At the end of the day, it's my composition and I can record it as many times as I choose to! It is by no means meant to replace that very special original recording but it will sit proudly alongside it as one of the many approaches that could be taken with this most evocative and atmospheric song. I hope people will enjoy it in the spirit of it being a fresh and alternative companion piece to that original marvelous moment in time captured on tape many years ago." Following the critically acclaimed Blood Oaths of the New Blues, songwriter James Jackson Toth returns with a cycle of intimate and raw songs, recorded along his travels. Bringing in like-minded musicians like guitar virtuoso William Tyler and collaborator Darin Gray, Toth wraps his expert wordplay around some of his finest songs to date, including the instant classic "Dambuilding". For his new album "Farmer's Corner" Toth a.k.a WOODEN WAND decided to try something different: instead of spending a week in a studio with the same people, the same engineer, the same equipment and the same state of mind, he would record in fits and starts, whenever - and whereever - he felt like it, recording new songs as he wrote them. Over six sessions in four studios spanning three states, he began amassing tracks. Toth then chose his favourite songs for "Farmer's Corner", which is, remarkably, the very first self-produced WOODEN WAND album. Abetted on the majority of the tracks by electric bassist Darin Gray (On Fillmore, Jim O'Rourke, Grand Ulena, Dazzling Killmen), and guitarists William Tyler (Lambchop, Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo) and Doc Feldman. Toth also called on friends in St Louis, Nashville, and his current home in Lexington, KY to produce an album that splits the difference between the protracted psych of his work with the Vanishing Voice and the World War IV and the more lonesome, bucolic styles of his more recent albums with Michael Gira and the Briarwood Virgins. The result is the most "WOODEN WAND" album in the WOODEN WAND discography, reflecting Toth's omnivorous musical and narrative obsessions. the arrangements - think Little Feat covering Harvest Moon - only serve to highlight his capabilities as both a songwriter and storyteller. The collected songs form an easy entry into the ever-growing Toth output, where outlaws on the run, epic landscapes, endless travels, agitated insomniacs and ditch-digging memory-evaders lurk behind every turn.

It speaks in several silvery tongues, and like last year's "English Little League" takes many routes to the same shimmery, elusive destination: rock greatness. Its twenty songs (in thirty-eight minutes!) range from the shaggy Who Sell Out pop-pourri of "Evangeline Dandelion" to the lurching, rifferific "Planet Score," breezing briskly through every worthwhile rock und roll style sheet along the way. Pollard and co.'s influences are by now so thoroughly assimilated that GUIDED BY VOICES referents are mostly to other GUIDED BY VOICES songs/eras: "Save The Company" calls to mind GBV's Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes lo-fi glory daze, while "Vote For Dummy" could be from Isolation Drills. For instance. Recent intramural turmoil aside (GUIDED BY VOICES has a long history of members qutting/getting fired/posting private correspondence online/waking up in the gutter), the band has never sounded more cohesive;
when Tobin Sprout's insanely catchy feather-light confection "Record Level Love" bobs up against the deeply purple spray-paint rock of "I Am Columbus," which then pinballs into the elastic, sprightly "Difficult Outburst and Breakthrough," the pacing and variety always seem to make some kind of higher sense, if only as an appeal to the senses. "Motivational Jumpsuit" is gangly, wordy, heavy, lovely, catchy, rocky, complexly simple, and better than almost any record you'll hear this year. This is the fifth record (in three years) by New Era GBV, and there will be more. This is not counting the eleventy-three solo albums/side projects frontman Robert Pollard has released under his own name and various proxies. The listener may be forgiven a certain degree of bewilderment at the sound feast spread before him, but rest assured, this is the result of hard labour by a restlessly inventive musical mastermind. You can dig in anywhere you like, but you will always come back for more. Like a star to every wandering bark, GUIDED BY VOICES is as constant as love. You can't say better than that
