The first release to cement the partnership between Fire Records and New Zealand sonic luminaries THE CHILLS is collaboration with acclaimed contemporary artist Shane Cotton. "Somewhere Beautiful" is a triple LP set of live recordings featuring lavish packaging 3 x 180gm LPs and 2 exclusive prints of Cotton's artwork. All songs on the three LPs were performed by The Chills and recorded at a private party on New Year's Eve 2011, in Central Otago, New Zealand. Each portfolio contains a unique art print inscribed with lyrics by Martin Phillipps of The Chills. Music and art are brought together in this contemporary object, where text intertwines with image in order to generate the sensational and the unexpected. The collaboration between The Chills and Shane Cotton came about via Conceptio Art and David Telpitzky, who brought the two artists together. Shane painted the diptych "Rolling Moon" as a response to the live performance featured on this record. The Chills are a band from Dunedin, New Zealand fronted by the rare talent of Martin Phillipps. Originally formed in 1980, The Chills had a revolving cast of band members with Phillipps remaining the only constant. Joining Martin Phillipps for the latest phenomenal live incarnation of The Chills are:Erica Stichbury on keyboards, electric violin, rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Oli Wilson on keyboards and backing vocals, James Dickson on bass and backing vocals and Todd Knudson on Drums. They all feature on the recording of "Somewhere Beautiful", as Martin explains: "The third ever five-piece Chills (out of some twenty Chills line-ups) kicked into action over five years ago - and wonderful things began to happen! Soon we were asked to play at a private gig near Queenstown in New Zealand's South Island for a combined birthday party and New Year's Eve gig at the end of 2011. Of course equipment failed, all the things that should go wrong did their best to do so - but yet! we caught on tape (in the modern digital sense that is) a wonderful night, with many happy people enjoying The Chills in a raw but warm, relaxed and rewarding situation. The recording has been tidied up as little as possible - but as much as was necessary, and here it is!"

Mournful, lush arrangements that sound almost medieval at times with stark strings, classical guitar and piano overlaid by MATTHEW SAWYER's bare, distinctive vocals and creepy foley sound effects. The record is a place. Not the representation of a place, but something inhabitable. With a clearer vision than his other records, the album is very notably about death. SAWYER wrote and recorded the majority of the album following the loss of three friends a few months apart in 2011 and completed it two weeks before his son was born. The record views life and death as just a memory or a dream of the other, and tries to reconcile the gap between them. It considers the dream world to be just as valid an experience as the waking world, and that death is like a dream we'll have. Mathew says;
"When I die, I'd like to die in the night time as dreaming in sleep is not of this world anyway. Lost in a dream is nothing to be afraid of." The album was recorded and produced by Sawyer at his home. Although this record is under his own name, previously he has gone by the name of MATHEW SAWYER & THE GHOSTS, and before that just THE GHOSTS. He has released two albums, "Blue Birds Blood" in 2006 on Catbird Records (USA) then 2007 on Stolen Recordings (UK), and "How Snakes Eat" in 2010 on Fire Records. "In Mathew Sawyer's world, love is important, but seems less important than the circumstances and details of itself. Just because Mathew Sawyer's voice is odd, doesn't mean he'll fall back lazy on sung melodies. Originality squared is something infinite. Fiery Argentine trio LAS KELLIES return with their fourth album "Total Exposure. The album features a wonderfully eclectic collection of tracks, drawing on their post-punk and punk roots with added inspired from reggae and dance music as well as bands like THE SLITS, ESG and 80's girl group HUMPE HUMPE. This beckons a new sound for the band, with the introduction of keyboards, synth drums and more harmonious vocals. The result is a splendidly seductive, cohesive album with a summer party-time, slow-groove vibe and sprinklings of PEAKING LIGHTS and MASSIVE ATTACK. "Total Exposure" shows LAS KELLIES leaning heavily on dub influences thanks partly to the involvement of Iván Diaz Mathé (IVI LEE), one of the most influential reggae-dub producers in Buenos Aires - having worked with the likes of LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY and MAD PROFESSOR. The album also features guest appearances from another reggae legend, Dennis Bovell (who mixed their last album) as well as THE MAKE UP and CHAIN AND THE GANG frontman, Ian Svenonius. Led by Ceci (guitar and vocals) and Sil (drums and vocals), LAS KELLIES formed in 2005 in Buenos Aires. They went on to release their raw debut "Shaking Dog" in 2007 (which was described by Everett True as "entirely ace"), followed by their DEVO and ESG inspired 2009 album "Kalimera" and 2011 saw their first LP for Fire Records, Kellies, which received an 8/10 in the NME. The album title "Total Exposure" is a reference to how Ceci and Sil fully immersed themselves in the composition and recording process. Their new album was cut at ION Studios, one of the most important studios in Buenos Aires, where a host of huge Argentine artists have recorded from both the rock scene as well as legends of tango and folklore. This had a huge impact on the outcome of the LP, lending a fuller, richer and more classic sound. Their live shows are full of infectious energy, with their garage rhythms and teasing impertinence. Originally released in tiny edition of 52 on Albert's Basement Records, BLANK REALM's 2010 album "Déjà What?" became a homeland hit in Australia after it was picked up by Brisbane's Bedroom Suck label. New Zealand band SURF CITY's forthcoming album continues their love affair with psychedelic, reverb-swathed guitar pop, drawing from their Flying Nun forefathers THE CLEAN & THE CHILLS, as well as the fuzzed-up dream pop of THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN and the loopy noise of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE. This time round the songwriting is stronger, the tunes are hookier and the sound is even more lush. Recorded in snippets around the world, this is their second to be released via Fire Records. Arch Hill put out their debut album "Kudos" domestically in 2010, before it was released worldwide by Fire . The album enjoyed plaudits from the likes of Stereogum, who praised their "impressively assured sound" and "perfect 2-minute pop storm." Pitchfork noted that "their punky psychedelic pop is impressive" and admitted "Surf City's pleasure for pleasure's sake approach already has me pining for more." The band toured the US and NZ/Australia before taking a brief hiatus until Davin moved to New York, where he found a basement studio in Chinatown and began to work on the new album. He soon realized that the Big Apple wasn't really for him (revealed in the song "NYC"). He returned to New Zealand and continued recording. He soon found himself in South Korea and far removed from everyone he knew. Filling so many of his late nights and early mornings with recording additional vocals and guitar parts in his apartment, the paper-thin walls would eventually cause the neighbours who lived upstairs to move out. During this time Davin was listening to a lot of BOB DYLAN, SCOTT WALKER & LEONARD COHEN, who all coloured the lyrical style that appears on the album. In many ways it's a sad record, reflecting the loneliness and introspection that can occur whilst traveling and spending a vast amount of time alone on buses or trains or in airports with these legendary songwriters on repeat. Musically, SURF CITY have developed their signature reverb-heavy fuzz rock in to something more gutsy whilst retaining a keen ear for melody to create some unforgettable tunes.

"Honey Locust Honky Tonk" is a compact wonder and so varied, tuneful, graceful, magnificent and ebullient that you'll be forgiven for thinking that ROBERT POLLARD has saved his best for his own album. Slicker in some ways than recent GUIDED BY VOICES efforts, though not without its own down-home charm, its seventeen songs still whiz by in 34 minutes, stridently showcasing POLLARD's songwriting mastery with some of the best tunes he's ever penned. The longest, the semi-stately album closer "Airs" clocks in at just over three and a half minutes, but most are in the two or two and half minute range typical of POLLARD's attenuating genius. "I'm not afraid to be immature, to make a fool of myself," he recently offered as a reason why he's been able to continue writing music at such a high level for so long. "I'm not afraid to look insane." The only thing crazy about a song like "It Disappears In The Least Likely Hands (We May Never Not Know)" is its slightly loopy title. The song itself, a chugging Heroes-era BOWIE anthem whose entire lyrics are contained in the title, is a marvel of both concision and affect, featuring the full force and range of POLLARD's voice, which has never sounded better. Sure, it's an over-used trope of rock bios to say that such-and-such or so-and-so "has never sounded better," but that doesn't make it not true. (Two can play at the double negative game!) For any other guy whose reunited band has just finished putting out four full albums and an EP in eighteen months, the release of yet still again another solo album might seem excessive, to say the least, but "Honey Locust Honky Tonk" sees POLLARD on top songwriting form. He's done it again, folks. "Honey Locust Honky Tonk" is as sweet and as sharp as anything ROBERT POLLARD and friends has ever produced. Bite it and see.
