After eight years fronting New Zealand's acclaimed "trouble gum art punks" The Mint Chicks, Kody Nielson unveils a new project Opossom with the captivating album Electric Hawaii. Following a June release in Australia and New Zealand on Create/Control, the album will be released in the rest of the world via Fire Records in August. The Mint Chicks chapter in Kody's career closed with the band splitting time between their American base in Portland OR and hometown Auckland. Brother Ruban formed a new band, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kody began producing diverse projects including Bic Runga's recent album and Auckland punk up-and-comers, The DHDFD's. Electric Hawaii presented a new challenge, an album written and performed with just a little help from others - Bic Runga lending a vocal while Kody's father Chris Nielson (a regular Mint Chicks collaborator) plays trumpet. The rest comes directly from the brain, hands and heart of Kody. Home-written, recorded and mixed by himself with just the final mastering courtesy of Howie Weinberg, Electric Hawaii is a unique beast - it is not the singer-songwriter solo album of a former punk rock band singer. It's a further exploration of Kody's musical journey into a lively, engaging world of carefully layered sonic layers of light and dark. It's an album about love, DIY, drugs and freedom. And why end up Opossom? The mental escape from daily life during the creation of "Electric Hawaii" produced Kody's nocturnal instinctive animal... feisty, vicious and enigmatically cute. The new direction and new sounds incorporate what Kody terms as an overt attempt to add some of his personal Polynesian background to his blend of beatnik psychedelica made from out of context genres, surf rock to the Velvet Underground, modern and ancient electronica and jazz. If they aren't L.A.'s biggest band, Jail Weddings definitely have L.A.'s biggest sound-an nine-person-deep rock n' soul revue that feels like the Pogues as produced by Phil Spector, a soundtrack to a Hollywood-gone-Babylon left unloved and unexplored since the last notes of X' Los Angeles LP. Their 2010 full-length Love Is Lawless was gigantic, the kind of thing that should be a film (directed by Billy Wilder) but becomes an album instead. L.A. Weekly correctly called it "a big, fine mess of weepy, quavering, hiccupy hurtin' hurt, plowed through with a way-tough punk rock theatricality and welcome good humor." Now Jail Weddings return with a leaner line-up and a new EP called Four Future Standards. Recorded through the fall and winter of 2011-2012 by Mark Rains (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Waylon Jennings), Four Future Standards reinforces frontman-architect-drill sergeant-and-mad-genius (oh, and singer) Gabriel Hart and his returning core members . And this time, the songs (in a way) are all love songs : The raging Scott Walker-meets-Ziggy Stardust cabaret rocker "Overnight," or the collision of Gun Club guitar and Shangri-Las melodrama that lets "Good Book" make death into the break-up to end all bitter break-ups, or the punked-up Del Shannon-style story of regret and revelation in "Red Light Rhythm." Or especially "(There's Nothing Worse In The World Than A) Crying Girl," an unflinching last-call operetta that could have been written by Warren Zevon, produced by Nick Cave and recorded by Roy Orbison . but only after a bleary night playing Iggy Pop's "Turn Blue" until the needle gave out in a wisp of smoke. In these four songs are love as sickness, love as delusion, love as warning, love as righted wrong or wronged right-even love as total helplessness before impending doom, as seen through the lens of an upturned bottle. Texas native John Peña began writing and performing under the Heavenly Beat guise in the latter part of 2009. After a handful of short live shows, John put performing on the back burner and began working on building a stronger set of songs. John emerged from his bedroom after months of leisurely paced recording with a couple of tracks that would become his first release on Captured Tracks in the form of the 7 inch single "Suday". Being influenced by nothing in particular has payed off as many have had trouble pinning the sound down as anything other than "immaculately arranged and paced" and "attractive music for attractive people". Thus again proving that just because you've heard a song by The Cure or Neil Young doesn't mean you have to ape it shamelessly to gain wide acceptance. Shortly after the release of "Suday" Heavenly Beat released the A side "Faithless" for their forthcoming 2nd single, igniting not only the blog world but the interest of the uninformed few who might have missed "Suday". By paying homage to no one but himself, John Pena's band has become one to watch in 2012

(Proponents of the "factoid" seem to enjoy pointing out that they probably live in the eastern portion of Los Angeles). Beginning with their first two releases (Yes I'm Stalking You/Branded By Nuns and Oblivion/The Bible Belt on Infrasonic ) DVZ has assured The Conglomerates that they will assassinate, by messy beheading , at least two backwards assumptions about music no longer being fun or universal, and will relentlessly continue the terror on a regular basis, until the so-called "world" complies with their vision, or ends up on it's knees. Either outcome is acceptable.

Ned Collette moved to Berlin from his native Melbourne two years ago. A well known and respected singer-songwriter in his own country and in underground circles worldwide, he has toured Europe previously with the likes of Joanna Newsom, Akron/Family, Bill Callahan and Nina Nastasia. His early musical output was based mostly in experimental music, before he gravitated towards more traditional song structures. His new album "2" (his fourth album but his first outside of Australia) will be released in August. It is a mix of experimental pop songwriting, musique concrete and dark folky soundscapes. His current solo shows are performed with voice, nylon string guitar and samples. While comparisons have been made to everything from Leonard Cohen to Ghostface Killah, Collette remains tricky to define but instantly identifiable.

Junior Violence" begins with a death rattle of the most optimistic sort. Half-synthesized and half-howled, the first song on APE SCHOOL's new album sums up birth, death, and the guilt you face as you drop the needle on side A: Did you know you fucked yourself? Everything is on the other side of that question. Answer it and you'll wonder why you're just now fessing up. Tell your truth and the Oberheim OB-8 will cascade like a waterfall. The bass line will try to feel you up. In November 2009, singer/songwriter Marlon Hauser met his fellow band mates while wandering the streets of San Francisco, in the middle of a permanent existential crisis. Upon that moment, their writing process began and has bewitchingly metamorphosized into an all-encompassing live musical transformative experience. While carving out an idiosyncratic niche for freak followers, Siddhartha's music is becoming widely known as Dashiki Shoegaze - a genre all itself. The record was recorded and mixed in my home at Maritime Hall, and in my friends living room when I was homeless for a bit last year. The recording process spanned from about September 2010 until the same time of year in 2011. During that period, I was either homeless or living in my current living space with no windows. It's made me a bit strange, I think. It's a good thing, I think. I'm able to escape the sound and interference of the outside world. It's akin to living in a sensory deprivation tank. The story behind the record is the story of Siddhartha and what the entity goes through on this earth. A range of issues from love to morality, to violence, to the existence of the soul and is it possible to monetize the soul. It is also the personal story for me of how much I miss my son. I have sacrificed everything in my life to make music. Including my family. IF IT DIE . THEN GIVE IT LIFE. The world is changing;
I believe that a huge influx of positive energy is needed to save us. Save the babies. Save the children. IF IT DIE is an observation of the world from another entity. PETER & KERRY's strikingly assured debut CD "La Trimouille" follows up the well-received "Clothes, Friends, Photos" EP which came out in late 2011 to a chorus of approval across blogs and digital press. Peter Lyons and Kerry Leatham met in 2009, brought together under the wing of London-based Tape Club Records. While Southampton native Lyons had joined with Tape Club in 2006, releasing a handful of singles along the way, self-taught guitarist Leatham had grown up 100 miles away, in Colchester, inspired into songwriting by Ani DiFranco's passionate folk strumming and the Van Morrison records she grew up hearing on the family stereo. As a duo, they bonded over goofy comedy appreciation (the cheerfully fizzy, bass-driven "Annie" is an ode to Goldie Hawn rom-com, Overboard), and a mutual love of 0s electro pop. These influences shine brightly on stand-out track "Split For The City", an up-tempo, synth-filled pop gem that evokes the Giorgio Moroder & Philip Oakey hit "Together In Electric Dreams", aided in part by the electric guitars and "crap Yamaha keyboards from the late 0s and early 0s" that provide the album's instrumental bedrock. Retro electro may figure prominently, but there's a flair for modern digital tropes too, such as the understated chiptune bossa nova of "Montmorillon", and the layered hiss ' crackle on "St. Pierre", mementos of a summer spent writing in the French locale which gave the album its name. "We listened to Beach House constantly, as well as a lot of Grizzly Bear, so we had reference points" says Leatham. "But it ended up sounding nothing like either of them". PETER & KERRY have now yielded a bright, thrilling debut - a collection of earnest, character-driven electro pop snapshots, fuelled with the joyful simpatico of their bold boy / girl harmonies

Anna-Lynne Williams and Robert Gomez, nearly strangers, left Seattle and Denton and went to Marfa to make a record. As old loves bled out pink, the color of that month of February, the color of a long-setting sun, they platonically arranged their instruments in a tiny adobe house in the most dreamlike town in Texas. NÜ SENSAE has taken big risks with even bigger payoffs on this release. Proving just how unpredictable they can be, they abandoned their status as a duo - a favourite angle of both the media and fans - and recruited Vancouver noise rock great Brody McKnight as a full-time member. Previously working with the now-legendary group Mutators, McKnight has added another dimension of heaviness to the band's already mind-melting sludge attack. They've also embraced diversity in other ways, allowing more loud-quiet dynamics into their songwriting. From the creeping dirge of "Tea Swamp Park" to the vast expanse of "Say What You Are," the quiet sections offer brief moments of uneasy solace between the full out attack of songs like "100 Shades," "Tyjna" and "Eat Your Mind." Elsewhere, subtle but defined melodies surface amidst the fuzz of tracks like "Burnt Masks" and "Dust." Don't be mistaken, though: Sundowning is designed to bludgeon with the raw aggression that can only come from the best elements of noise, punk and grunge.

Breaking up is hard to do. Especially when you've just hit thirty and it is with a partner you've spent the best part of a decade with. Plus, you've just reached a creative dead-end with your band. Many songwriters would beat a hasty retreat to the bedroom with their pain in tow. Ben Holton of EPIC45 took a different approach. Instead of brutally analysing everything in microscopic detail through music, he decided to retreat into creating a classic pop record, exploring the sounds that dominated his childhood.In his mum's utility room. Holton's first album under the MY AUTUMN EMPIRE alias, "The Village Compass", was a collection of intricate folk songs, recorded alongside EPIC45's output over five years. "II" is a more cohesive affair, with the songs laid down over a relatively short period of time in the Autumn of last year. Although a regression into the sounds of youth sounds like a simplification, Holton found it was a period of experimentation, embracing new kinds of song structures distinct from anything he'd attempted previously, incorporating key changes, middle eights and multi-part harmonies. Taking musical cues from the solo output of The Beatles - the album's title is a nod to McCartney's "II"- the eight songs presented here draw on the lyrical and musical conceits that are the lifeblood of great pop songs, with Holton's words serving the infectious melodies, universal enough to resonate with anyone who has been the victim of cruel love. There's an avoidance of the maudlin and melancholy;
"The Give Up" is a meditation on how far a little hope goes, while the sense of directionless in "Help Me Out" is heightened by the shimmering retro-futuristic synths that recall ELO's spacey synthesis of The Beatles and 1970s prog. Holton was taken with the warmth and grandeur of this distinctly unfashionable Birmingham band, a mainstay of Midlands charity shops to this day. Recreating their soaring synths on cheap, outmoded keyboards creates an uncanny beauty, their redundancy reflecting Holton's fear of personal and creative burnout. There's a dark humour running through "II", which opens with "Every Now And Then I Fall Apart";
a reference to Bonnie Tyler and a nod to just how ridiculous and essential heartbreak and pop music are. The saccharine harmonies and an irresistible melody of first single "Say it Again" initially obscure its dark heart, a murderous suburban revenge fantasy. Not your typical usic as therapy' record, then. It shares the uncertainty and ambiguity of Wilco's "Summerteeth" and Grandaddy's "The Sophtware Slump". The final track on "II" is a radical folk reworking of the This Heat classic, "Sleep
