Available for the first time on Champs Hill Records, violinist Ittai Shapira’s 1999 release was recorded in the Music Room at Champs Hill and initially released on the Quartz label. Bringing together sonatas by Delius, Ravel, and Franck, Shapira was fascinated to explore what ‘French’ sound really meant to him, along with pianist Jeremy Denk. Shapira says “While heavily associated as part of the French repertoire, each piece has its own distinct sound while integrating influences and reaching to other cultures: Blues, Gamelan, and British. A distinct sound that stays in one’s memory while bridging cultures is what I aim for to this day, 17 years after recording these works, both as performer and composer.”Ittai Shapira is both a violinist and a composer. Described by the NY Times as “an Israeli dynamo with a flourishing solo violin career” he has performed widely with international orchestras. He has recently premiered and recorded his Concerto for Violin and Cello, “Sephardic Journeys,” coupled with his Violin and Clarinet Concerto, a multidisciplinary project in close collaboration with Sir Salman Rushdie and visual artist, Alexander Klingspor.

Claude Debussy’s taste for the arts, and for painting in particular, is well known. A very wide-ranging taste, which ran from the Italian painting of the Renaissance to the masterpieces of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, by way of Japanese prints and Impressionism. The aim of this set is to show how music and painting nourished each other in his output. In an article of 25 January 1915, a music critic praised Debussy’s oeuvre by comparing it to that of Claude Monet. The composer was deeply touched, and wrote back: ‘You do me great honour by calling me a pupil of Claude Monet; be so kind as to add to that honour my affectionate friendship.’

The Farench pianist, Claire-Marie Le Guay, began playing piano at age 4 and entered the Paris Conservatoire at age 14, where she studied with Jacques Rouvier, Pascal Devoyon and Bruno Rigutto. Following her education in Paris, she continued her education with a variety of established teachers, including Dmitri Bashkirov, Fou Ts'ong, Claude Frank, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Alicia de Larrocha, William Grant Naboré, Andreas Staier and Leon Fleisher. She was a winner of several major international competitions: First prize winner at International Contest of Chamber Music of Portogruaro in Italy (1990); Prize-winner at Maria Canals competition in Barcelona (1994); First prize winner at ARD Competition in Munich (1994). In 1998 she was voted France's Young Musician of the Year. François Salque is recognised as one of the most stunning cellists of his generation. His profound musical thinking and phenomenal technique have earned him many prestigious awards: François is a prize-winner at such international competitions as Lausanne (Unanimous First Prize), Geneva (2nd Prize), ARD Munich, Tchaikovsky in Moscow... He was each time given the highest distinctions ever awarded to a French cellist in the histories of these competitions.
