This is the tenth release in the Toccata Classics exploration of the music of the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000). Here his chamber music with flute is in the spotlight. As with previous albums in this series, the music here highlights the characteristics that make Farkas’ music so appealing: catchy tunes, transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, a fondness for Baroque forms and a taste for the folk-music of his native Hungary that marks him out as a true successor to Bartók and Kodály. Some of these pieces speak a tougher language that shows Farkas to have been in touch with his times, but it is the infectious melodic appeal of most of the music here that carries the day. This album features twelve works comprising 35 individual movements and eleven different combinations of performer. The central performer here is one of Europe’s finest flautists, the Hungarian-Danish András Adorján.

The great Viennese musical tradition, as represented by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler, found itself straining the limits of tonality during the first two decades of the 20th century. Schoenberg, Webern and Berg consequently forged a new compositional world, engaging in what they saw as the historically inevitable development of the system of atonality. In contrast, however, Karl Weigl continued to pitch his marvellous music in a more traditional style. Schoenberg wrote in 1938 that 'I always considered Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old school; one of those who continued the glittering Viennese tradition'. This is clearly heard across Weigls entire output - in his symphonies, songs, concertos, string quartets, and the chamber works for piano, cello and violin in various combinations.

Energetic as well as poetic is Karola Obermüllers music, and it reveals hidden and unknown elements underneath the multilayered musical material. Zooming in on musical details is a special feature in several of her pieces as in 'Pulstastung' for example. Here the distances between the musical occurrences are extended more and more, 'with an increasing pulse at the same time' (Karola Obermüller). Obermüller is inspired by ancient poetic texts as from the greek poet Sappho. Here she finds the essences of human existence like light and night, eros and longing. In 'Untergegangen der Mond' and 'silbern.' her music tries 'to create moments of magic' (Volker Blumenthaler in the booklet of the CD). In 'Myrmecia' microtonal shiftings are confronted with percussive making of sound, which are creating a 'strange, crackling, and insisting stream of sound', the composer compares to the wild activity of the primordial ant, the title is derived from.

Sueye Park introduced herself to the general public in 2017 with no less a calling-card than Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin. On the present disc, the South-Korean violinist (born in 2000) has a pianist at her side, namely Love Derwinger, himself known from a number of recordings. The repertoire is also a more varied offering this time, with violin favourites such as Elgar's tender Salut d'amour and Tchaikovsky's Mélodie, as well as more virtuosic fare, for instance in the fireworks of Wieniawski's Scherzo-Tarantelle. Sueye also includes two solo works on the disc: Ernst's much-loved Last Rose and in a nod to her previous disc Paganiniana, Nathan Milstein's fantasy on themes by Paganini. Performed with equal measures of poetic sensitivity and effortless virtuosity, this is a recital to dip into as well as to listen to from start to finish from the fiery passion of Pablo de Sarasate's Introduction et Tarantelle to Contemplation, Heifetz transcription of Brahms's song Wie Melodien zieht es mir.

In 'Clair Obscur Colors of Saxophones', extreme contrasts play a defining role: beautiful and ugly, loud and soft, bright and dark all these qualities are brought to life by the Berlin saxophone quartet, clair-obscur. The musical spectrum ranges from Old Masters to the extreme fringes of contemporary music. Cri Muet for saxophone and orchestra brings together tender lyricism and machine-like rhythms, along with Beethoven quotations and contemporary atonal harmonies. As Times Go Bye for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone plays with the concept of time using motivic material from Johann Sebastian Bach. In Pavane, old and new meet in the contrasting sounds of saxophone and English Horn as well as in references to the music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luis de Milán. In Berlin Punk, Enjott Schneider attempts to transpose the attitude and character of Punk culture into a symphonic setting. Rough, loud, dirty, insolent, and aggressive, yet also lyrical, poetic, and yearning: this is the impressive emotional range that is radically achieved in the virtuoso performances by the members of clair-obscur.

This second and last volume completes two different sets of string quartets: the four so-called Solo Quartets by Franz Anton Hoffmeister and Gioachino Rossini’s six String Sonatas (or Sonate a quattro). Both sets differ from the ‘normal’ configuration in that they allow a double bass to take part, albeit in different roles. Rossini, who composed his sonatas at the age of 12 (!), left out the viola and gave the double bass a more or less conventional bass role – apart from the occasional virtuosic outburst. The sonatas were first published in an arrangement for traditional string quartet and are often heard performed by string orchestras.In Vienna, where he was active as a composer and music publisher, Hoffmeister (1754-1812) chose a different solution than Rossini and gave his double bass player a leading role in the ensemble, letting it replace the first violin. It was no coincidence that this happened in Vienna – considering the amount of solo works for the double bass composed there, the standard of playing must have been exceptional. On the present recording, it is the Dutch player Niek de Groot who takes up Hoffmeister’s challenge in the company of a Finnish trio consisting of Minna Pensola, Antti Tikkanen and Tuomas Lehto. Featuring the same team, Volume 1 (BIS-2317) was described by a reviewer in Gramophone as ‘entertaining, effortlessly enjoyable and beautifully performed’ upon its release in 2017.
