This is the first in a series of four albums recording all 80 of the folk songs in English that Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged for voice and piano or violin. 57 of the 80 songs have not previously been recorded in these arrangements, so there is a good deal of unknown - but very beautiful - music to be found here. This first album has 23 tracks including 15 world premières. It includes Folk Songs from Sussex (1912) and Six English Folk Songs (1935). Later volumes will include songs collected in the Eastern Counties (1908), the Appalachian Mountains (about 1938) and from Newfoundland (1946). Vaughan Williams is well known as a collector of folk songs, but his own collection by no means predominates in this series; most of the arrangements were made and published as a collaborative effort, drawn from many sources. The 14 songs from Sussex on this album were all collected by Percy Merrick from Henry Hills, a farmer from Lodsworth, Sussex, around 1900. Some will be well-known in other arrangements; others will be unfamiliar. Praised by Opera for her "dramatic wit and vocal control", British soprano Mary Bevan is internationally renowned in baroque, classical and contemporary repertoire, and appears regularly with leading conductors, orchestras and ensembles around the world. Opera singer Nicky Spence is one of Scotland's proudest sons and his unique skills as a singing actor and the rare honesty of his musicianship are steadfastly earning him a place at the top of the classical music profession. Roderick Williams is one of this country's most sought after baritones and is constantly in demand, encompassing a repertoire from the baroque to world premières. In 2016 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Singer of the Year award. In 2010, British violinist Jack Liebeck won a Classical Brit in the young British classical performer category. A multiple-prize winning and critically acclaimed conductor and accompanist, William Vann is equally at home on the podium or at the piano and is the founder and Artistic Director of the London English Song Festival.

Chen Reiss, who is at the heart of Mozart’s Ch’io mi scordi di te? as well as Beethoven’s terzetto, is a rising star of the opera world, receiving widespread acclaim for her sumptuous sound. Mozart wrote this concert aria for himself and the soprano Nancy Storace, who had played Susanna in his opera, The Marriage of Figaro. For this recording, Chen Reiss is paired with pianist Javier Negrín, who has enjoyed considerable acclaim for his solo Odradek releases. Javier Negrín brings these special qualities to this interpretation of Beethoven’s piano transcription of the Violin Concerto, a version he describes in the album booklet as “totally idiomatic”, adding: “To me, this music speaks about reconciliation and acceptance; it has a very serene beauty and purity of sentiment.” This recording features tenor Jan Petryka and baritone Paul Armin Edelmann alongside Chen Reiss and the Beethoven Philharmonie, an Austrian ensemble created for and specialising in performances of this repertoire.

The World Premiere Recording of John Tavener’s ‘Palintropos’ for piano and orchestra, performed by the Japanese pianist Aruhi with the New London Orchestra and conducted by Ronald Corp. With the exception of The Whale and Celtic Requiem, the earlier music of John Tavener has been somewhat eclipsed by the mid to late works such as The Protecting Veil, The Ikon of Light and The Veil of the Temple. Here is an opportunity to discover discover one of Tavener’s early masterpieces. Dating from 1978 it was composed and was flanked by his chamber opera A Gentle Spirit (1977) and Akhmatova Requiem (1978). Palintropos is one of Tavener’s most dynamically works in his output and alternates between columns of sound of exhilarating, ferocious pianism and lyrical arabesque-like passages of sheer beauty. In this World Premiere Recording of John Tavener’s ‘Palintropos’ the pianist is the brilliantly talented Japanese pianist Aruhi (making her debut commercial recording) and she is accompanied by the New London Orchestra conducted by Ronald Corp. Also on the album is Michael Stewart’s ‘Beyond Time and Space (In Memoriam John Tavener). A three movement work composed for Aruhi exploring the nature of ‘consciousness’ and the idea of consciousness as informa on that exists beyond me and space that ul mately permeates the en-re universe. Aruhi is a classically trained pianist and composer who has given recitals in Japan and Europe, both as soloist and accompanist, working with, among others, the oboist Katsuya Watanabe, the violinists Ami Ito and Michiko Kobayashi.

The remastered recordings on this album are taken from early recordings and film soundtracks. The music ranges from ballets (Holst's The Perfect Fool and Manuel de Falla's El Amor Brujo), through incidental music for a play (Delius's Hassan), to films, with music by Vaughan Williams, Walton, Alwyn, Parker, Boughton and Bliss. Ralph Vaughan Williams's great theme for the wartime film 49th Parallel has reappeared in many guises, but is still popular in its original form; Muir Mathieson, who recorded the soundtrack made this early recording in 1948. A composer himself, Mathieson conducted music for many films and commissioned film scores from others, including several on this recording. Gustav Holst's ballet The Perfect Fool was first performed in 1923, but the recording presented here is Sir Adrian Boult's first recording, from 1954. The theatre producer Basil Dean commissioned music for James Elroy Flecker's play Hassan, first performed in 1923. Excerpts from the recording made in that year include the 'Serenade', sung as a wordless tenor solo, and the evocative final chorus 'The Golden Road to Samarkand'. Manuel de Falla's ballet El Amor Brujo was written in 1914 and was an important feature of the 1958 film 'Honeymoon'. This recording, with Beecham conducting, was taken from the soundtrack. Beecham did not make a commercial recording of the work, so this recording is especially valuable. Rutland Boughton's Lorna's Song from the film Lorna Doone brings back to circulation a delightful recording not heard since the days of 78s, and sung by the star of the film, Victoria Hopper, who is featured on the cover image. This recording consists of six fantastic, beautiful, sometimes a little bizarre, rare violin sonatas from the early 18th century and includes three première recordings. This release is the first of a new FHR series in which samples of the musical riches (mostly not yet published or recorded) that lie in the Dresden Schrank II collection which FHR will bring to life through new recordings. A large portion of the Schrank II manuscripts belonged to the composer/violinist Johann Georg PISENDEL (1687-1755), who whilst travelling throughout Europe, amassed a huge quantity of music, mostly manuscript. Some he bought from music shops or receive directly from composers. Most, however, he copied out himself. This collection is one of the largest and most diverse repositories of late-baroque music in the world. The Austrian Johann Joseph VILSMAYR's strange but illuminating Partita (Sonata) is a first recording, and in fact one of only two known extant sets of works by the composer, the other being the 6 Partitas also released by FHR. Alongside two gorgeous sonatas by the Italian Gasparo VISCONTI, there are three tremendous sonatas by Swiss-born Johann Freidrich SCHREIVOGEL. The only sonata not from Schrank II on this recrording, the one in E flat major, is from the Tartini Collection, also a première recording, is now featured on the ABRSM Grade VIII violin examination syllabus (2020-23). The Two brilliant musicians on this recording were chosen specifically for their incredible skills, musicianship and specialist baroque talent. Violinist Kinga Ujszászi and harpsichordist Tom Foster, both members of The English Concert baroque orchestra, give incredibly exciting and stylish performances in a wonderful crystal clear recorded sound. Italian pianist Michele Campanella has become renowned as a Liszt specialist, but with customary modesty and respect for the composer's music he has chosen to wait until now to record the seminal 'Années de pèlerinage'. The desire to get to grips with these pieces dates back 50 years to when Campanella was first starting to play Liszt's music, but he waited, recognising that maturity and experience would bring him closer to Liszt's own state of mind as he composed these pieces. Liszt's dazzling virtuosity is often emphasised, but in this recording Campanella has accentuated the composer's more introspective tendencies, making this a unique and truly insightful interpretation. The three sets of Liszt's 'Années de pèlerinage' take the listener on a journey not only through the geographical regions that inspired the composer, Switzerland and Italy, but on a voyage through his own personal development, becoming increasingly inward-looking and spiritual with each cycle. The first set, 'Suisse', already displays much of that psychological scope, with works of quintessential Romanticism: poetic, evocative and wide-ranging in their emotional landscape. The second set, 'Italie', is even more organic and compact in its conception, and in the final set we hear an older composer reflecting on life and death in music characterised by impressionistic colours and profound spiritual depth. This album is a rare opportunity to hear a musician immersed in Liszt's world perform this music in a way that puts the music first; Campanella does not use Liszt's pieces as a vehicle to showcase his own skill, but records them with a sincere wish to communicate the intricacies of the repertoire. With this in mind, Campanella has recorded Liszt's works on a Steinway model D from 1892 that has survived to this day with all its original components intact, resulting in a warm and authentic sound.

Adolfo Gutierrez Arenas was awarded the Maurice Ravel Prize and made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra before embarking on an illustrious career. "Adolfo is a cellist of exceptional ability, both as an instrumentalist and as a superbly gifted musician" (Bernard Greenhouse, cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio). Christopher Park has been chosen as a 'Rising Star' by ECHO (European Concert Hall Organisation), and alongside his award-winning engagements as a soloist, he is passionately involved in chamber music, regularly collaborating with an array of prominent artists. As a composer Sergei Prokofiev was so versatile that audiences never quite knew what to expect. As a strategy, this could misfire but with his first symphony he got things just right. He once described what he had wanted to achieve: ‘If Haydn had lived into this era he would have kept his own style while absorbing things from what was new in music. That’s the kind of symphony I wanted to write...’ The ‘Classical’ symphony has been a true classic since its first performance in 1918 and is one of the few genuinely witty pieces in the twentieth-century orchestral repertory. A few months after the performance, Prokofiev left Russia for the USA where he remained for some years before settling in Paris in 1923. It was here that he composed the Second Symphony, now with the aim to be as up-to-date as possible. The first audience in 1925 was more bewildered than enthusiastic, however, and Prokofiev himself came to have doubts, wondering whether in this symphony ‘made out of iron and steel’ he’d overdone the rough counterpoint and density of texture. He now returned to a project he had been working on for several years – the opera The Fiery Angel. In 1928, when he began to think that no opera house would take it up, Prokofiev decided to reuse the music and found that ‘the material unexpectedly packed itself up into a four-movement symphony’ – his Third, characterized by an overwhelming sense of anxiety and tension. The present disc is the fourth and last in a symphony cycle which has earned the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton critical acclaim worldwide.

Odyssey is first and foremost a tribute to the Africans who crossed the Atlantic tied in chains, and found the strength to create arts and music that have reshaped and elevated the modern world. The original Sone Ka-La came out in 2005. The band toured nearly thirty countries, and inspired many young musicians from Europe, the Caribbeans, the US and even Japan. After creating Sone Ka-la, like Ulysses, Jacques Schwarz-Bart left his island to explore different worlds and realities. Hence the subtitle: Odyssey. Fifteen years later, he is back to his Ithaca, his musical landscape of Guadeloupe, with a new vision of the original concept. Sone Ka La 2 Odyssey‘s main innovation is to fuse the singing and the saxophone into one voice, carrying the melodies, might they be tumultuous, angular, mysterious or serene. It is the first jazz project with such trademark. Secondly, instead of two Gwoka Drums, one of the Gwoka masters plays the drums, transferring the traditional language to a modern instrument. Finally, there are more contemporary sounds throughout, from the keyboards, the frequent presence of electric bass, and generous use of effect pedals on the saxophone. With the rich experience from his Odyssey, JSB plants his feet firmly into the musical ground he forged years ago, to propulse his creative mind further than ever before. The Soné Ka La 2 / Odyssey project was selected by the jury of the Jazz & New Music Fund of the FACE foundation (French American Cultural Exchange), supported by the Direction Générale de la Création Artistique for year 2021.
