Alberto Nepomuceno was a herald of Brazilian musical nationalism. He was one of the first composers in his country to employ elements of folklore in his compositions, he encouraged younger composers such as Villa-Lobos, and his music was conducted by Richard Strauss. The Prelude to O Garatuja, an incomplete opera, is one of his best known works and an example of a truly Brazilian lyric comedy. Série Brasileira is a vivacious suite that employs maxixe rhythms and ends with the feverish batuque dance, while the Symphony in G minor is one of the earliest such examples by a Brazilian, a heroic and lyric structure revealing the influence of Brahms.

Gottfried von Einem was one of the great composers that played a major role in rebuilding the Austrian music scene post-1945, following the devastating cultural policies of Austro-fascism. These policies were conspicuously hostile to modern trends, even more so than those of the Nazis. We remain indebted to von Einem, not least for his rescuing many scores by banned colleagues from destruction. The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony. It evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognisable and immediately appealing – as can be heard in the three works on this album, all receiving their first recording. Rosner’s Nocturne suggests the immensity – and the implacable violence – of outer space. His overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. The monumental Sixth Symphony opens with music of volcanic ferocity and vehemence; the central Adagio then provides an island of troubled calm before the dignified opening of the finale presages a symphonic Allegro of wild, freewheeling energy; only when its immense force is spent does this powerful masterpiece sink to an uneasy close. This is the third volume of the Toccata Classics survey of the orchestral music of Arnold Rosner, with more projects in the pipeline

Drawn to the ‘twinkle in the eye’ in Carl Czerny’s Etudes, Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974) wanted them to ‘sparkle like the fizz in mineral water’ when he made his orchestral renderings in the late 1940s. When those scores were refashioned for a ballet, Riisager invested them with even more of his trademark buoyancy and colour. But change was to come with the composer’s Violin Concerto of a few years later. The shift in style reveals the composer’s deep and developing thoughts on musical contrast, instrumental naturalness and concerto form and is realised vividly on this new recording from the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Ian van Rensburg.

In 'Clair Obscur Colors of Saxophones', extreme contrasts play a defining role: beautiful and ugly, loud and soft, bright and dark all these qualities are brought to life by the Berlin saxophone quartet, clair-obscur. The musical spectrum ranges from Old Masters to the extreme fringes of contemporary music. Cri Muet for saxophone and orchestra brings together tender lyricism and machine-like rhythms, along with Beethoven quotations and contemporary atonal harmonies. As Times Go Bye for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone plays with the concept of time using motivic material from Johann Sebastian Bach. In Pavane, old and new meet in the contrasting sounds of saxophone and English Horn as well as in references to the music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luis de Milán. In Berlin Punk, Enjott Schneider attempts to transpose the attitude and character of Punk culture into a symphonic setting. Rough, loud, dirty, insolent, and aggressive, yet also lyrical, poetic, and yearning: this is the impressive emotional range that is radically achieved in the virtuoso performances by the members of clair-obscur.
